Catacomb E1 5b 5c "50 Years On"

Rob Matheson returns to climb Catacomb on Dow Crag, 50 years to the day after his first ascent back in 1972 with his Dad, Murdoch. On this occasion Craig, his son, is filming, supported by the evergreen Ian Cooksey. Another 'Angry Pensioner Production' in the "50 Years On" series.

I climbed Catacomb with a friend two days ago and we just adored it. Thought it was one of the best multipitches we’ve ever done (far superior to Nimbus) with really thought provoking and tough moves. It’s so great to see this wonderful video and the history of the route. Thank you so much for putting it up, it’s a stunning line. We agree with your final point… deserves soft E2

I started my climbing journey over 40 years ago. When this route was put up they did it with a static rope, a bowline around the waist, a hip belay and old leather boots. Not to mention homemade protection. Those were the days of real adventure.

Great stuff Rob, keep the videos coming. My first time at Dow this summer, despite having climbed for 40 years! Brilliant crag, and fantastic rock, that and East Buttress of Scafell. look forward to doing catacomb !
