This Swedish giant defies the rules of climbing - Magnus Midtbø
Music and Sound Effects: share.epidemics...
The fact that Magnus attempted to climb an 8a while missing a hold and being completely nonchalant about it is brilliant
Typical Magnus..
Magnus only sees dynos.
I mean it looks like a white hold from some angles... If you aren't sceptical of holds you might just think the setter set a bit too hard for the grade...
*hold
He missed a hold, not a hole.
Cim seems just as mentally strong as physically - all while coming off genuine and humble. Hope you both keep collaborating!
8:48
you can see the climber wheels starting to turn upstairs.
;)
And really humorous too. More of you two would be great.
it IS very cool to see different athletic types mix & gain experiences
You cannot become competative strongman level strong w/o mental strength, you need to pus well beyond what a normal person would think possible.
Imahine he climb with alex honnold
more (climbing) vids with this guy pls! was really fun watching him try to improve, seems like a super focused guy
Seems like a hell of a nice bloke too.
He's such s pleasure to watch 😊 trying hard and having fun ❤
well bcoz he actually like it...i think..bro is enjoying his time
climinb community sould be more inclusive, i have seen plenty of chubby people shaming. I'm glad such videos are published!
Yes!
At 15:50 Magnus ,one of the best climbers in the world , struggles with a problem and takes advice from a random guy / trainer and listens to him very carefully. Still trying to learn from no matter who. Such an incredible mindset and personality with such a down to earth attitude. That's what makes him a great champ AND a great person.
I think that’s just a big part of how climbing culture is. Correct me if I’m wrong.
For example: Even though I climb around 6B-6C when bouldering, my friends who climb around 7B-7C+ sometimes ask me for beta, like if I’ve seen someone else do the problem. 🤷🏻♂️
A lot of Norwegians are like this, especially when it comes to things we don't know. Most are not gonna act like know-it-all when we are new to a place cause that is silly. A prospect I hope the most of the world would adopt.
I don't speak Viking, what did he say?
@@MR-nl8xr He told Magnus to turn his left heel in towards the wall and then demostated the position he should end up in.
An elite climber like Magnus takes some quick advice about a completely new route to him from what I assume is a journeyman climber who works at the place and knows the specific holds very well? He should have slapped him in the face.
Hi Magnus! I was that random asian guy that walked up to you and your camera man at the sofa area where you guys were preparing for the shoot, my mind was both in awe and confused. Only been climbing for a year, your first vid with Junji was the one that inspired me to try climbing and I love it so much. Watched pretty much all your vids, definitely missing the random shenanigans and vlog style videos from year ago. I am on a student exchange here and out of pure coincidence, somehow I decided to head to the Telefonplan gym that afternoon (first time visit) [it was the closest gym to my place], at the exact time as you guys. I literally just watched your video with Adam otw to the gym and to see u in the flesh the moment after...Possibily one of the luckiest moments of my life. Awesome to know who Cim is too, been wondering who he is ever since I saw him that day. Pretty awesome to see the bts of how the videos are shot, huge appreciation to your camera man as well. After seeing some incredibly strong people try that emil boulder 5:01 and not even being able to do that first move to the top right hold, it is terrifying how easy u make it look...
he didn't actually do the first move or this boulder did he? He directly jumped to the high hold. Weird that he still writes "7c", cause definitely that first move looks incredibly hard, if not the crux of the boulder
@@LePetitBat The stand start (that I did) is 7C and the low start is 8B
@@magmidt oh my bad! Holy shit 8b, that's why it looked so hard 😭
Sorry for doubting king Magnus 👑
Wholesome❤
Guys, sorry for being out of context but what's the name of this playground/gym? How can I find insta handler?
Magnus and Cim’s chemistry is great and Cim comes off as super funny and light hearted! Nice to see him enjoying climbing so much
Agree, I hope that they do more videos together 👍🏻
The sandbags attached to the harness at such a cartoon weight might be the funniest thing of 2024 for me. This video was a treat.
10:03 magnus executing a text book comp kid "are you all looking at me?" Pose on the finish 🤣
Well it's 3 o clock likely pretty busy and there's a guy who looks like Magnus with 4 camera men pointing at him there are probably a small crowd
"If I die, I die."
Spoken like a true viking
Or another Swedish giant, Dolph Lundgren in "Rocky IV".
That day comes, when it comes.
@edane7542 "All living things die just as we too will die,
but a life lived with honor leaves a mark that never dies."
-- Havamal (words of Odin), stanza 76
But for a viking it matters how you die, you're probably aiming for Valhalla. Watching them free climbing, I actually became a little bit worried, He would end up in Valhalla.
@@MrVvulf Who also has a master's degree in chemical engineering!
Imagine accidentally filming a guy breaking two world records, just messing around for an awesome RUclips video. Epic.
If Cim have wanted to try climbing he could not turn off an offer to be taught by an extremely good climber.
@@NUMMEHARBEN super fun to watch him try so I’m glad he did it with Magnus.
Imagine He climb with alex honnold
Well to be fair it is not quite correct to talk about a world record when very few people in the world know and use RGT. The Rolling Thunder handle is mainly used in one-handed deadlift competitions. It has the same or slightly greater thickness than the RGT, both are rotating. As far as I remember the current world record recognized by Ironmind belongs to Alexey Tyukalov - 130.5 Kg.
@@xerxis301 that’s a good point, and I could take it more seriously if this guy wasn’t within striking distance of establishing some world records in strength. But I buy what you’re saying, and I’m not qualified or know enough to have a real opinion on it. You seem to know what you’re talking about so I will agree with you.
Guy gave an absolute beast of an effort - you can tell he's real competitive and obviously very humble to be this vulnerable as a champion in his own sport.
@13:39 - Dude was genuinely pleased at doing that and the grin on my face kinda hurts. He seems like a super person.
I saw it too.
:)
Bruh jumping from even half a meter while weighing as a semi truck kills your joints so much, it is understandable why it's pleasing for him.
Seeing such a big guy so jolly after climbing is wholesome af
Fantastic collaboration! So much respect for Cim for 1. even attempting this, and 2. managing to haul that much weight up those routes! Just goes to show his strength, both in body and mind. Really great to watch.
i love how when he jumped down the camera shook 5:37
I was here to say this too, but at 3:06
That Marvel super hero landing
So that's the earthquake I felt a week ago...
Last time this happened dinosaurs canceled their sub to life.
even 13:49 felt like a small earthquake.
As one of the likely thousands of people you've helped get into climbing over the years, these are my favorite videos. Spreading the fun to anyone, regardless of success, skill, body, etc. Spent the entire video yelling "C'mon you got this" to both of you.
21:44 love the classic fist-bump/high five confusion. To be fair as the climber Magnus should have defaulted to fist-bump first, Cims obviously a natural!
That sh** happens all the time!!
Can we just go back to shaking already😭😭😭
Definitely the lactic acid kicking in. Gets your brain that little bit of lag fog.
@@LinusAkaPano I don't k ow about that, since this stuff happens even when guys are in a normal state.
Thanks Magnus. The Swedish gentle giant has a wonderful disposition and attitude.
Im unreasonably excited to see Cim climb
as a big guy my self, it was never the grip that was the problem(well, the main problem), but that we cant really push are hips against the wall, so we essentially have to arm climb everything as hips, chest, belly push us out
That's what I thought. It's just anatomically impossible to stay lose to the wall for a guy that big. So it's not just the weight and gassing out fast. I is also having to deal with awkward body positions.
I made a comment here the day you made yours, and it's gone now.
@@MR-nl8xr what was your comment?
@DM-lh5hk It was about mobility and mass, I can't remember.
The only way to have real 1A in the world going forward is with Polycentric Comments, period.
As a freeclimber for almost 20 years i can say good grip, finger strenght and a Lightbody is perfect
I like climbing because here everyone can be equally challenged, and everyone will compete against themselves first.
"equally challenged"
- This video proves otherwise.
@@MR-nl8xrhmm yea... he's like 30-40% bigger than a normal person. so i wonder if it's roughly like for a normal person to climb, but with all the holds 30~40% smaller?
@@kobiianardo40%? He weighs what, 160 kg? Lol
@@kobiianardoAverage adult human male weight in European countries is 80 kgs (176 lbs). This guy is 160: literally TWICE bigger than a normal person.
@@jonasjorgensen8759 xD trying to strike a crude balance between pure geometric size (he's above scandanavian standards, but not by 30-40%) and weight (doubling most for sure)... since the size of the holds and their relative placements are more of a geometric measurement relative to different ppl? i think the contrast is made even more comical since magnus is slightly shorter built than average think.... like seeing an adult at a kids playground trying to gingerly step between things not his size
"Magnesium makes everything alot better... just life in general" - Such a climber's quote 😂
Great vid again Magnus! ❤
makes you think magdust should be called magnusium although that doesn't exactly roll off the tongue
You can tell these guys both respect each other. They are both beast in their area of focus, so funny to see Magnus doing grip and then seeing Cim do bouldering is really funny... and just the same humbleness on both sides.. Cim casually breaks two world records and just laughs like he is not worried about trying to inch a few more out on the record. Just casually does it, and doesn't worry if he might be able to do better, he stopped when it no longer felt natural...
And then Magnus teaching Cim showing how great a teacher he is. First day climbing he not only shows him some interesting problems, but also makes sure by the end Cim got a chance to feel the satisfaction of a long climb. Shows that Magnus really cared about what he had planned for the day for him.
I really like the energy of these last two videos with Cim. It shows the Scandanavian character, vikings sure, but also class and humbleness. That same approach to learning skills that made my ancestors such feared opponents on the battlefield. Cim ancestors 100% are well represented in his genes... he is about as viking looking as it gets...
I love to think that Magnus is behind the scenes like "come on man you have to act intimidating to me, it makes you look stronger and it's good for content" and he's all like "okay buddy whatever you say 😊" he seems like a gentle giant lol
I have known two giants in my life and both have been gentle. But they both had problems with their health early in life.
That intro bumping into Cim was gold LOL
Edit: CIM IS A CHAMP! Attitude and personality, that man has it!
That was so fun, Cim is an awesome personality for the videos! Love seeing these elite athletes out of their comfort zones being so positive about it.
He seems to be having fun!
13:36 proves it
Cim just gets more and more impressive the more you hear/see him.
It’s really awesome seeing an athlete willing to get out of their comfort zone and do something like this. It’s inspiring. \m/
Cim gets like an A++ for effort, what a champ!
Watching him climb is hella impressive! Congrats on the amazing video as usual
this guy is like a gentle giant, so adorable and wholesome to watch
Another great video, Magnus.
Huge respect to Cim for his first climbs and his determination. That first belay attempt, without the sandbags, was eye-opening. Imagine belaying Cim if he fell from a trad route, a few metres above the last protection.
And it's nice to see you having to work and think your way through problems, rather than just flash them...especially when you fabricate a first-move crux by unintentionally skipping holds 😆
He moves with a surprising amount of grace for someone of his size. I'm very impressed.
Imagine CASUALLY breaking 2 world records, and then saying "I could do more. But, I don't want to push myself too hard".
As a guy who's 6'4" and 275, this inspires me to keep climbing and not be self-conscious.
Copy and pasted this from another comment:
Forget the levels, jus the fact the his type of mass is trying is crazy.
I see featherweights zip up the walls (especially kids) all the time, and then giggle (non harmful like) at someone double their size barely making it half way up, the same climb; they just don't understand🤷♂.
Do what you like! Life is short
@@MR-nl8xr Read this as "just the fact that this type of mass is typing is crazy" lol
Watching Cim climb made my day. What a great guy, thanks.
I would love for a climbing part 2 with cim. His energy is contagious and seems like an amazing guy!
Magnus just casually crushing V8 and 9 while waiting is way funnier than it reasonably should be
These 2 guys are great. Cim is a fantastic sport for trying something so far out his comfort zone, and Magnus listening intently to the advice from a fellow climber, so humble!
aiming for 6a+/6b as a complete beginner is crazyyy lmfao
I had to rewind to make sure I heard correctly
Really? Or only if you are super heavy, because I did a 6b the first day I went to a boulder gym.
@@Lucas_SM_Gymnasthenics Then, the route was either perfect suited for your body or you are just a talent if you have never climbed before. I have done 2 6b's in my life and I climb for about a year. I'm not heavy at all
@@Darckfire43That, and some gyms ive been to had 6b's where in my gym it would be a 5c max.
@@Lucas_SM_Gymnasthenics if you're really really athletic and find the perfect boulder for you then you can do 6b on your first try, what type of route was it?

OH WAIT
I think it would have been interesting to see him do the whole thing.
Because he left out the powerfull moves low in the overhang.
:D
I'm from Germany and I was in sweden for holidays last year. Hightest thing on my bucket list was visiting this Gym because I've been a fan of Eric for years. I really enjoyed climbing there, this gym ist huge
Seeing Magnus go flying when Cim fell down was hilarious.
I had to scroll awhile to find this comment, but this xD
I cracked up at his delayed "..JJJEEESUS", while that happened 😂
Also his "legs first" almost upside-down pose, lol
Cim is amazing such a nice guy. You can tell he is happy to test his limits and explore new kinds of strenght sports
Gravity's a great equalizer! No matter how strong, if you have to carry your own muscular weight, it ends up being (more or less) the same kind of difficulty for every beginner.
More weight is generally a disadvantage in climbing. Your arm muscles (or "finger muscles") are only able to do so much; when the rest of your body gets heavier, they're generally losing relative efficiency.
@@jakobbauz I will have to agree with you. @IceCenders is clueless. Just as in climbing a big hill on a bicycle. Just as in doing pull-ups. Skinny guy has the huge advantage.
@@geirmyrvagnes8718 Well, I don't think we need guns like "clueless". The issue isn't completely unidirectional. IceCenders isn't wrong concerning the fact that one needs muscles in climbing; and sometimes the extra weight of more muscles might be made up for by the added strength.
I just meant: Generally, more weight will end up being disadvantageous.
@@jakobbauz It was harsh, but I stand by it. I may be taking some old trauma out on a relatively innocent bystander, but I'll live with that. This is the internet, and even if he obviously is not a physically big boy, he can take it. Just the stunning abject stupidity of watching this specimen of an extreme athlete struggling with very basic climbing and then coming up with saccharine bullshit like "the same kind of difficulty for every beginner" just sickens and disgusts me. It is just plain insulting.
@@geirmyrvagnes8718 Alright mate. Take it easy.

Very impressive for a guy that big to be climbing a wall.
Also I loved the part where Magnus was trying to see if he could counterbalance Cim with his own weight. I think he probably knows what it is like to be thrown by a trebuchet now...
Seeing him get up on a route was brilliant 👏
More big men on routes please.
I have watched a couple videos now and whats so impressive is the non ego you have. Asking for help from someone is actually really cool. Everything is a learning process and if you can get past that thats awesome. Great job both of you.
That climbing gym is insane.
We WANT/NEED more climbing videos, Magnus. Just you and the wall.
I'm imagining this guy as a Viking. No wonder the Vikings took over everything.

You and Cim seem to be having so much fun in this gym, nice to see.
This really shows incredibly well "The bigger they are, the harder they fall."
honestly id love to see more climbing videos, i love the other stuff you do and that you branch out to make fun and exciting content, but its relaxing to just watch you do your thing yk.
Just in case, when you are once in switzerland, you need to visit one of the three „Gaswerk“ Climbing gyms, they have some V14/15 there, and the route setting is insane. Petra Klinger also trains here, i see her sometimes.
Cim is such a beast! I don't thick people quite realise how much more energy he needs to use to shift that much weight. Congrats on the world records!
Watching him fall off the wall is actually terrifying.
I love Cim and big dudes like him! They're always extremely kind and total sweet hearts!
Pewdiepie said in his last video that he's willing to climb with you as long, as you're willing to apologize for the crime of being Norwegian, lol
During my prime years climbing I was given the nickname 'The Big Ballerina" Now I am nowhere near as gigantic as Cim but am a tall stocky guy. The trick in being slightly bigger than the average climber body, is improving your flexibility. Early on I found that was the key and improved greatly over time to do 5.11 'off the couch' onsights. The bulkier a person is it seems the harder it is to be flexible. Big muscle mass does not execute subtle moves and finesse very well - its a physical reality. . Cim demonstrates this in the beginning of the video when he attempts certain moves. Most body builders go for reps of heavy weights in short burst of power in their workouts. Its a way to bulk up. Climbing needs power but more importantly endurance. -= more slow reps but not alot of weight. Anyways I've babbled long enough here. This was a fun video !
Magnus! Apologize now for being Norwegian so you can do a collab with Felix!
I finally tried rock climbing a year ago and it was really fun! 😁😁

Day 1 of asking Magnus to collab with PewDiePie in Japan
here to remind u it happened in case u missed it
As a fellow big man, there are some climbs we just can't do due to our centre of gravity, and some times the legs can't get into certain positions because of the extra mass of our torsos.
Loved this episode!
