When you mix THE FINALS, Battlefield and XDefiant... (Combat Champions Review)

- With the upcoming release of XDefiant in a few days and THE FINALS Season 3 in a few weeks, I took some time to review and compare C77's arena shooter game in development - Combat Champions. Do I think this game has a real future and is it a competitor to THE FINALS?
Who's also excited for the XDefiant release coming up soon? Gonna be griding that game early on for sure :D

I know these are in part DICE devs, but it would seem most of the masterminds of DICE went to Embark in term of style, gunplay, gameplay, design, feel and creativity.
Yeah that's a fair comment, I remember THE FINALS Alpha being still far advanced compared to what this test is showing, the shooting and destruction etc was still crazy back then to what it is now.
I will say that this will create some interesting competition for The Finals. I would love to have the game show and sponsor aspect. I guess we'll have to see how they build on this base game.

Yeah I'm the same, I tried this game just to see what it has to offer against THE FINALS, but ultimately, I just really enjoy it over any other game I try to play. Also my friends are starting to get into THE FINALS as well so I'm like super happy ahaha

I think is more of a competition to xdefiant, and I’ll probably prefer this one over xdefiant

With all due respect, this game really won't be a threat to The Finals in any way (even when it fully releases). Not only because its two different styles of FPS but The Finals is just on a completely different level, when it comes to gunplay, movement and especially destruction; they'res no other game out there that's a direct comparison to it. I know this is just an early playtest but I really can't see those games being remotely comparable when the only things they have in common is its gameshow theme. I'll definitely pay attention to it tho.
Most people dislike the gunplay(ttk) and the difference in health and lack of variety In weapons ..

hopefully the finals cook up with season 3 and add at least a 10v10 game mode where u can change classes/abilities and sum crazy gadgets.
Good, honest take on the game. Enjoyed the video. I do hope The Finals does moves further into the lore and purpose of sponsers they created. Still lost on what all these names/companies represent. The flare of the sponsors in this game look really fun (minus the cheesiness). Makes you feel like part of a team versus just wearing a shirt or pair of pants with a sponsor’s name on it. Or being called “the Mighty” during a match.

You should give a look at Spear's channel, he does really good vids on the finals lore. Also, Rockhound black covers some of that, but his focus is more on easter eggs and arg's. I personally highly recommend both of these; definitely +25% more love to this series just on the passion of the content creators and the devs' dedication.

Yeah exactly, this is just a start to something that can evolve into more, end of the day it’s a very small dev team and they’re just showing so far what they have made :)
I like the idea of game shows but I do wish we got a game like Unreal Tournament (cough epic...) where it was treated like a roman gladiator match, ie it's not virtual and rated M for gibbits.

Oooh, based on the footage you showed us theres a few things that I quite like which I hope embark can implement into the Finals, such as mascots, maybe minigames ( collection of their different gamemodes? Maybe rotation?), more gameshow aspects like custom dialogue (rookie/vet player dialogues based off the players stats)
100% that’s pretty much my overall summary, I think this game has a loooong way to go, but some elements of it were pretty fun to see, like those mini game modes as you said :)
Movement and animations look stiff but fun

Fair play, I think the mode in this game is pretty good for those that come from Battlefield for example so makes sense, if they work on some things this has some really good potential :)

I tried this game but it's extremely jank compared to its main competitors of The Finals and Xdefiant. A lot of time is needed before this game can become a true competitor to such games.

I don’t mean to be mean, but this game looks very boring… the level design, the guns, the gameplay, everything about it looks phoned in and overdone. It’s a clone of a clone of a clone of a clone.
I don’t think more development time will enhance this experience.
That's a fair take, like I said at the start of the video, I wanted to play this game to see what strengths this game has, and some of the gameshow vibes etc looked really good, but ultimately I do think that the "tech" is definitely behind, especially compared to when I was playing in THE FINALS Alpha/Beta's for example. I don't know what stage this game is at, but it does kind of feel like a "Pre-Pre Alpha" or something compared to what THE FINALS has right now

The real important thing - does the game run well? Lots of new games will release with horrible performance even on the best specs available. 144fps on low settings, 1080p and a high spec PC is how a lot of the newer games run and that's HORRIBLE.
Good point, I will say server wise when I first started playing it was bad but did improve over the weekend, FPS wise I didn’t notice too many drops and was definitely getting over 144Hz, occasionally hitched but expected at this stage
^ Agreed. I managed to get access and at first it looked stuttery. But I managed to changed the graphical settings until I could get a very smooth not pc boiling 60 fps at 1440p with 144hz.
I think they should have cooler name than combat champions, i have no recommendations and ik alliteration is very good for marketing but man... combat champions.

Hey good point, I’ll explain that basically when I review something I like to take all pointers towards each game. I’ve been a real advocate of the finals finally getting a competitive scene, and taking aim at some of the balance changes to the game.
As for the “skins” I think it’s an added bonus for sure but I wasn’t really commenting on that, I’m talking about the player journey in the game which sure can be skins related for unlockables, but I’m talking about having a “career” feeling related to player progression because casually it’s just a nice thing to have keeping you with things to do in the game.

and half of the front page of the sub reddit has to do with skins or battlepass(skins).
literally half. on a regular basis. i only go there to quickly scroll and count and chuckle.
i have a feeling these two things are correlated, and i would also guess the total concurrent player count dropping, is a result of this as well.
unless you redev every other year(COD) or your called fortnite... live service FPS is a tough genre to make it in. we do know that competitive focused live service fps games(that arent called fortnite) ARE the games that last, for decades even....
sorry for the rant but, i just wish we had more than ottr pushing for a comp scene. i fear thats what it is going to take for the game to thrive, and it just doesnt seem like anybody wants it. especially not the fcar haters.
For me, I'd say: Fun, vibes and skins, better than opponent and lastly winning.
That being said with a lot of games on live service models cosmetics that have good vibes and keep you interested is huge even for casuals that won't grind the game in any way. Keep in mind that esthetics altogether can either onboard someone or turn them off completely. Lastly, as far as battlepass warriors are concerned. I would think people who paid for it try to actually finish it. Otherwise, they threw out some money for nothing? That being said, there are a lot of games and a lot of cosmetics tied to non gamepass events, so for me, it's more the chase than exclusively a visual reward...

there is a very big difference on core focus. for one. 95% of people play the ranked mode 95% of the time.
i really do hope the finals does well. we shall see.

Although, I disagree as far as focus. Some live service games literally focus exclusively on pvp, whereas others have a variety of modes, and not all of them are catered to evenly, or even at once. And that's doubly true if they have some degree of ranked system available across modes.
That being said I totally agree, I really want The Finals to keep doing well and keep succeeding.
People interested in shooters and majority of people who liked the finals font give a shit about the theme and all that nonsesne you are speaking about ...the pass didnt habe much good weapon skins ..the guns are weak af out the gate and the meta didn't change in season 2 off the start ... Cant believe u cover the game and you think the reason is some stupid character thing 😂..
Very few weapons variety between classes ... Big difference in health ..long ttk ..dont need to be like cod but its a long fight either way ..
If the finals had classes with similar health ajd weapons available to each class it would be way bigger than it is rn ..
Yooo, I’m sorry you wasn’t happy with the video and my opinions. I will say that I’m in no way saying that one small addition of the game (character development) will beat an entire context of a game. I am only saying that it’s a big area THE FINALS has such potential in and missed the mark on massively. If you watch some of my older videos, I’m only stating that because casually the theme of the game being a game show it’s not really presented as well anymore, but competitively of course I don’t care about my character, I want a game to feel good, shoot good and be fair. THE FINALS is walking towards that direction but obviously it’s miles ahead of this game.

Yeah of course, I said in the video that THE FINALS is years ahead in terms of development and I don't see Combat Champions catching up, but it's still always interesting to see what the strengths are of other games :)
I've said this on another channel but i'd just like to point out the amount of "Ex DICE devs" that are developing video games becasue theyre's just so many:
1. THE FINALS - Embark Studios, 3v3v3 team orientated gameplay with destruction with a Mirrors Edge - inspired artsyle and a gameshow theme.
2. Combat Champions - C77 Entertainment, Fast-ish paced arcade shooter with maps, destruction and gamemodes similar to battlefield but with a gameshow theme similar to THE FINALS.
3. ALARA Prime - Fall Damage, 4v4v4 tactical shooter similar to CSGO, VALORANT etc. Has a similar artstyle to VALORANT too in my opinion.
4. ??? - TTK Games, Battlefield - esque FPS game with large maps, destruction and is being developed on UE4.
(Theyre's probably more out there but these are the ones I know of.)
Yooo thanks, yeah I’ve heard of ALARA but didn’t really want to cover it because it’s more on that tactical shooter side, I only really covered this game because of the theme - and it’s obvious that this game isn’t going to take over THE FINALS etc but like I said at the start of my video, it’s always cool to see what strengths the other competitors have to create new ideas for innovation etc :)

Seems kinda fun to me, I'd probably try it out. But I'm not sure it'd hold me.
The vibe feels kinda generic, not a lot of character. It looks stiff, ttk looks too short for my taste, and I worry that it might get stale without ways (other than gun choice) to significantly change your build / play style.
But there is a glimpse of something fun there. They need to keep cooking.
Yeah I really don’t think it would hold me with the current state of the game, but I do think that it has something, needs some work and development deeper into the game, but its small studio and I was just simply checking it out, that’s all aha
This game looks alot more fun than Xdefiant, to say the least.
Honestly I was pretty suprised by it, once you get over the early development like movement etc, I started to enjoy it, but they still have some way to go :) Thanks for watching!
I know it's still alpha but it is definitely quite an achievement for the small dev team to put together what they have even by now. It has some 'jank' and some of the weapon animations and textures have still to be completed it seems, but that is to be expected from an alpha test. A lot of people seem to have found the commentators to be a 'ripoff' of Finals, but I kinda felt that the way the commentary in this game was much more dynamic. The commentators in Finals get very repetitive, which is NOT what I felt in this game. I genuinely enjoyed the commentary in the game and actually found it more engaging that the one in Finals (barring the fact that the ones in this seem a bit more 'off' in their tone).
Seems interesting. It's gonna be free I suppose 🤔

I dont like how it looks like your character is ice skating around and looks like the guns have no weight i guess you could say. Also the gunplay looks dated with how the recoil of the guns are. Seems like they just short of bounce around rather than having a recoil pattern. If they change those, i think it'd be something i would play.
Yeah I agree, I should have focused more on the weapon too, but I think that it was pretty obvious we can say that the game needs a bit more work, it's a start and it's interesting but it definitely has some way to go for sure.

The Finals feels unique because of Destruction, objective (Cashout), Dynamic vertical movement, Alot loadout building including unique one (hammer+Goo, CL+Mine, Flamethrower etc.)
But i don't find anything that make me want to play this game, its literally BF but no Vehicle which meh for me

People. this is WIP gameplay, from what I see, the animations are placeholder animations, It should feel a lot smoother upon release, also, this absolutely crushes bf2042 even in the current stage
No, I don't think this and finals compete even in the same genre, the finals is its own thing, you won't find kind of gameplay in any other game, so different worlds
