Hoisting heavy things

  • This year has been a good test for us, we took on some projects with complicated logistics. This was the last test in a long remod of a church. This ornamental feature was just shy of 3000lbs, GFRC or glass fiber reinforced concrete. It came in 8 slices and each slice had flanged that received 40+ bolts. That’s quite a lot of bolts. We had to build a platform to be able to assemble it and access it from the bottom. We rigged it by placing a giant ratchet strap around the perimeter of the lower radius, and then looping 4 rated lift straps around the ratchet strap. The 4 straps each attached to a clevis which was connected to a custom made 4-way spreader bar so the straps didn’t crush the ornament when hoisted. Lots of fun, and challenging. These projects come with simple instructions “we need this, put up there”. The rest is up to the contractor to devise and safely accomplish the task. This one lift required 40’ of scaffold inside the church to access the escape hatch, an 85’ genie lift, a custom fabricated spreader which cost is about $1200 to make, a temporary platform to assemble it, a giant crane to lift it, and 5 men. Lots of planning and lots of risk. We would look like assholes if this very expensive item exploded in the air. But, as planned, all went smooth. Thanks for reading and watching.
