With the 2006 remaster of Speak & Spell, surely there was a half-decent master tape of this somewhere, to stick on as bonus material? This track is too good to remain absent from the DM back catalogue.
Went to see Otway the Movie Last night (excellent) with a couple of old mates, and one of them told me he had written a song that Depeche Mode used to like to play live, when he was in a band with Vince Clarke, called 'Television Set'. Low an behold, here it is. His name is Jason Knott.
It wasn't written by any member of Depeche Mode but by one of Vince Clarke's friends when they were Composition Of Sound, although they can't remember who. And at that point in time they weren't being paid any royalties. So thats the reason it wasn't included on Speak and Spell.
Actually "The Price of Love" is awesome..in my opinion, sounds good to the ear and it's very catchy..but somehow I still don't know why they didn't add it to Speak & Spell? I would have sound awesome in that LP.
would love to have seen them live with vince clarke still in their line up. maybe in the future they could do their original songs using the old analog kit, along with vince clark at the helm. now that i would not miss!
The song was written by some friends of one of DM members and they never actually got the whole copyright thing settled. They stopped playing the song live and never recorded it.
I actually think the deteriation of the video suits the song adding to it's charm and also it's appeal. You would think it was deleberate, what does everyone else think?
'Did you see them running to me, babe; did you see the light in their eyes; I'm just a mass of communication; I sell what evryone buys.... I'm just a television set.'
Liverpool ’81...if you search for Photographic, you’ll see a an almost perfect video quality. There used to be a great quality one for Tora Tora Tora, but I cannot find it anymore. Can anyone pls upload the whole best quality vid for this concert. Thank-you. I’m only interested in quality video, not solely audio as I already have this on bootleg. oops.
The deteriorated tape makes this 100 times cooler, as it was already awesome to begin with. Too bad this song wasn't on speak n spell, it should have been.
I much prefer "What's Your Name?", actually. I know the band does not like it. However, I find "No Disco" to be the dreadful tune: "Move me disco...baby don't you let go. This is no disco..." Yuk!
Thanks a million for this ulra-rare gem.

Great song! It's a shame that they never released it in Speak & Spell.

The old French Connection and Composition of Sound tracks also.
It's a Vince Clarke's friend's creation I think. That's probably why it's not on the album.
Nice video effects! :) Analog!
Those aren't effects.... that's the original video quality. The tape clearly wasn't taken good care of.
@persiavenus This is for the vintage fans like us. ;-)
television set ... many new fans dont know this song and other like photographic.
At the stadium of Rome on 2006 few person know it.

the song is called “Television Set”, an unreleased song by Depeche Mode from when they were still known as Composition of Sound
