- Hello and welcome to living in the UK. Today I want to speak about the need to get your driving licence. This is one of the things provided in the welcome to the UK checklist.
Today's video is for UK residents who are not British citizens
You might think that you only need to apply for a driving licence when you are ready to drive but it is not so. You can and should apply for your provisional driving licence once you arrive in the UK and have lived here for a while. The online service mentions 6 months but I've met people who got it in few weeks after arriving.
Benefits
With this, you don't have to keep carrying your international passport as a photographic ID and you can use it as an alternative means of identification.
Secondly, the risk of losing your passport is also reduced.
Your provisional licence is valid for 10 years and allows you to drive with someone sitting next to you. This person has to be over 21 years and been driving for at least 3 years and you must display the learner L on the car both in front and rear

Sadly, I spoke with someone the other day who needed to make an application urgently and this requires a photographic ID. Unfortunately, their international passport has expired and they don't have any other means of photographic identification. The opportunity was gone.

If you are not a resident, you cannot apply for a UK provisional licence. If you have been in the UK less than 6 months, you can still apply even though the website says otherwise, I have seen people who have applied after 2-3 months of living in the UK.

Once you get the letter from DVLA is there a place where you can put the share code? Or you have to sent them by post the residence card or EU passport? Please can you explain this part? I got a share code which is given to me to prove that i am legally living in UK under the settlement scheme but at the online form I don't see a place where to put it.

I am trying to fill the uk provisional license online form..I have 1 query regarding the field which is "Have you lived in another country in the last 12 months".
I have been in UK for more than 1 year , but i visited india 2 times in last 12 months.But i stayed India only 50-60 days..Last time i visited india 2 weeks before.
Based on this information, what information i need to provide the above mentioned field?
If i provide yes to the field, the next question is what date is i have come to live in UK. Here if i provide last week date, can i apply the provisional license

When you complete the application, you will be sent a letter with the options of documentation to send. This will differ per application.
They did not ask.for photo

Please use the non-uk address option. If you watch the video from the beginning again, it should provide the details. I hope it helps

Hi ya ,they didn't ask our photo then how come it work
You will be sent a form to complete, sign and attach your verified passport photograph to, and then you will have to post that back to the DVLA. This will be the signature and passport on your driving licence.

Please note that this process is for people who have never had a UK driving licence and who do not have a British passport.

Hi, you will get a letter and form from DVLA. This will allow you send your passport photograph which will be used to issue your licence. Hope it helps?
