Great guy. Talented bassist. Devoted family man. Comic genius. Handsome devil. I've loved this man since I was 9 years old. Here's hoping he has a speedy recovery from his recent heart surgery, & that the band gets back out on the road touring again soon!

Tom stays in "the shadows" on stage as the rest of the band members have "huge personalities" on stage. Robin is the face of the band - the crooner (one of my all time favorite singers). Bun E. (and now Dax) is the ultimate timekeeper, and Rick is the "goofy nerd" with his screaming guitar licks... allot of personalities on that stage... Tom quietly provides the UNIQUE DRIVING SOUND of Cheap Trick with his 12 string bass which is key to their sound, and is the foundation of their music... You know who they are as soon as you hear the first few measures...

Tom Petersson may have helped design the first reliable 12 string bass, but it was not the first-ever 12 string bass. British bassists Jet Harris & Eric Haydock each had a 12 string bass as far back as 1964. Hear it during the instrumental solo section of the song "It's In Her Kiss", on The Hollies 2nd Uk album "In The Hollies Style". Eric Haydock said that it "was almost impossible to keep it in tune". However, the Petersson-designed 12 string bass was the first 12 string bass to be used on stage.

I believe that Chris Squire from YES was playing something similar to bass guitar at the time. For all the bass players out there if you want to hear the very best bass player in the world then check out Chris Squire from YES. You might want to go to the Fragile album and start there and then go to Close to the Edge album and I promise that you will never listen to the bass in the same way again. Those two albums are incredible and I believe that they have lasted the test of time. Recently Chris Squire had passed on and I would like to send my condolences to his family and friends. Fortunately Chris left us all a gift of his music for all time to appreciate and his message of Love !

I guess I have to agree with you there dude. 12 string bass???? I never understood shit like that. I mean, why not just play guitar then? It sounds like a guitar anyway...it defeats the whole purpose of the bass (to provide a solid bottom for the other instruments to build on). Wanna talk about underrated? I think Jon McVie is an EXTREMELY underrated bassist. I never hear anyone mention him, and he doesn't need 12 f'ing strings to get the job done!!!! Ok I'll stop rambling now...

Yes, John McVie is extremely underrated. So is The Late Dee Murray who was in Elton John's band and Tom Hamilton of Aerosmith. You can throw in Bill Wyman too because he was always forgotten too. Micheal Anthony is without question a totally underrated bassist. He was the driving force behind Van Halen!!!!

Ummm...Tom & Rick have been playing together since high school. Bun E & Robin were added on years later. Cheap Trick's signature "sound" is as deeply-rooted in Tom's unique style as it is in Robin's vocals or Rick's guitar. And, well, no offense to Bun E, but you see how integral HE was (NOT!) Rick's KID plays every bit as good as he did, if not better, in my opinion. Pete Comita was alright. He brought something to the table in terms of songwriting. But John Brandt was about as interesting as a brown paper bag. I could skip those years (& the album's that came out during them) ALTOGETHER, to tell you the truth. Tom's bass is what gives the band their heaviness. Without it, they're just an above-averqge pop band, the FIRST Cheap Trick in the 6x logo, if you will. With it, all six. That's probably why he "got" that whole logo concept. You probably still don't get it. Why am I explaining this to you? Go crawl back under your bridge, troll. Your comment is ridiculous.
