I hate the fact that they are still writing down their moves the old fashioned way. Why not give them tablets or have some technical staff do the notation for them so the players can concentrate on the game. Also there's a camera to record the game so it can be notated later. I find it strange and don't see the reason why they are still doing this in the new century.
Tradition sucks! Leave it to the Catholics! Let's focus on the game not the notating. They even get penalized or lose the game outright if they forget to notate their move, it's ridiculous!
***** you'll notice that the boards they are playing on are DGT e-boards which record the moves as they are being played which are then transmitted to the computers. The reason for writing down the moves is that is a part of the FIDE rules they would have to be changed. Now your question becomes, why don't they change the FIDE rules. Most tournaments don't have these computers, what is more even at a high level tournament some of the bottom boards won't have the DGT boards. This means you need some rules for the top players and different rules for the club players. Chess is wonderfully egalitarian, you don't get an advantage for being rich, famous or good looking. This also applies to the rules. The poorest chess player in the world has the same rules as magnus carlsen. So yes you must write down the moves. No it's not a forced stalemate. Try to visualize black king on a8, black knight on b8 , white king on b6, white knight on e6. It's white's turn to move, Nc7 is checkmate.
