This is one of my favourite quotes from Hollywood Babylon, on Judy Garland at the time of her death: "She was hundreds of years old, the oldest star ever, if you count emotional years, the toll they take, dramas galore for a dozen lifetimes. She was 'She', who had stepped into the Flame once too often."

That was beautiful and so tragic. It’s almost Nietzschian the contrast of Apollo and Dionysian aspect to one’s nature how beauty needs a little bit of madness, to live life to its fullest both these aspects must be balanced in a character to give birth to a dancing star.

Yes man. Bringing back some great memories with this. Still watch the Kenneth Anger films every now and then. When I feel especially esoteric. 😄

Fun fact: Kurt Cobain wrote a song called "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle."

True! She was an actress that "doctors" tortured with electricity to "cure" her. Crazy!

You should be immensely proud of every one of these videos Cliff. Whilst they don't always cover literature in areas I'm interested in they are always interesting videos and your delivery is enrapturing.
I wasn't so sure about the new outro when I first saw it; I always liked the classic "cut-off ciao" sign-off. However I was glad when you retained that. I'm keen for you to get some more Patrons and if this works then go for it.

Great Video! Excuse me for chiming in, I would love your thoughts. Have you thought about - Saankramer Earn Infinity System (Sure I saw it on Google)? It is a smashing one off guide for unlocking the combination to success minus the hard work. Ive heard some super things about it and my work colleague got cool results with it.

Just got the copy I ordered in the mail today. Your editing is getting better with each video. The whole opening fit the tone perfectly.

You kind of sound like Jim Morrison when you sing. Do you make original music as well as covers?

Hollywood Babylon and the book The Day of the Locust written by Nathaniel West were books about the dark side of Hollywood.

Will you review Camus' Stranger? or Sartre's Nausea. Liked your Notes from Underground review it was positive, thought some modern classic existential literature reviews would have came after.

Hi Cliff. I’m currently in the middle of Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon. It’s not material for your channel, but I noticed Kenneth Angers name on this video while scrolling through your Dark Stuff playlist. His name is mentioned more than once. Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon indeed. Not sure I’d recommend it but if you ever need a “light” read that’s still kinda “wtf” go for it. I recently finished Ligotti’s Conspiracy. It had been on my list but I finally pulled the trigger after seeing your read it. Love the channel. I can always count on you for something interesting.

Good work on this, Cliff. I'm currently deep into the book one of Min Kamp, and so far it has been like staring at a goddamn mirror.

This is great stuff man, Anger is definitely one cool guy. Does Bill Cosby make any sort of cameo? Either way, definitely checking this!

I would not call Anger a "cool guy." I met him in 1984 when I was seventeen. He was (according to my lawyer) just served with a lawsuit filed by my attorney on behalf of me.

If the book was finished in 1959 and published in 1965, how did it go up to the late 60's? Kenneth Anger was magic!

I have the hardback published in the 70's or so, and the softback version. Can't forget the story of Jane Mansfield's car accident with gruesome pictures. It's a fascinating book, and the poem Boulevard of Broken Dreams that Greenday Plagiarized the lyrics word for word with their song of the same title in the early 2000's.

I don't how you feel about reviewing books by authors you've covered previously. But I'd really like to hear your thoughts on Yukio Mishima's Runaway Horses. You brought it up briefly in the Sun and Steel review and would like to hear you go more in depth on it.
I'll be buying Hollywood Babylon as soon as possible.

Many Thanks Good Sir! Outstanding as usual, you should really get paid for these brilliant and stellar reviews. In a really cool way, you are responsible for me reading more. Also, your observation concerning Mr. Robert Mitchum is spot on in it's succinctness. I have Mr. Anger's films in a box set collection and he's a trip. Anyhoo, enjoy these reviews so much, thanks again for your time and observations. You have distilled Coolness down to a Science. Misfits! "Life is too short.." Ciao! \m/(>_

I really meant to get to Hollywood Babylon this past week, instead I read 'The Willows' and 'Hunger'. Both were fantastic! 'The Willows' I read in a darked out basement. I'm not much of a horror reader but there were times that actually gave me chills. 'Hunger' was one of the hardest things that I've ever read. It was hard to watch the destruction of this man. Great recommendations! Thanks for the reviews.
