  • This is America now??
We've all seen how homeless camps have made our big cities much worse. Well, it's even happening in our small resort towns. I went to Michigan's Traverse City to find out more.

It’s happening now where I live in the suburbs of a big city. I never once saw a homeless person ever but now hundreds and hundreds of WORKING CLASS are living at the park n ride bus lots near the freeway due to substantial rent increases. My rent just got raised hundreds a month. Landlord won’t lower it because I called and asked. So I gave notice and am leaving. I either will have to sell my SUV, buy a pickup and a camper or work a job that includes housing. I vow I will NEVER rent again! It offers zero stability and I refuse to give my money to landlords.

I live in a suburb of San Diego where our last mayor was AWFUL, as the homeless descended EN MASSE on our town and he was asked about what he would do to counter it, his response ? “What harm are the homeless doing to YOU?” Apparently he seemed to think it’s COMPASSIONATE to let homeless live in filth and desperation and drug addiction and crime vs getting a grip on the issue, or even trying to. So now he’s gone and we have elected a more conservative minded mayor who used to be a homeless drug addict in this very town and seems to at least think leaving them to live and die on the street isn’t compassion. It’s going to take years to try to turn around what poor leadership, draconian covid lockdowns, defunding the police , and making stealing less than 900 bucks worth of stuff a misdemeanor has done in 4 short, horrible, chaotic years.

The US has approximately 653,000 homeless and that's why you see this kind of thing all over the US. The greed in this country is going to destroy it. I live in the next town over from Hell and they are doing the same to my small town. Building all these subdivisions and when the people move from the city they want to turn the area into the same thing they moved from. It really ticks me off.

Maybe charge minimal rent for those that could afford it or just let people live there free for various amounts of time. So much cheaper then putting a homeless up in five star hotels like they are doing out of desperation in some cities. L
Right now illegal immigrants are talking about squatting in these houses themselves. So they will wind up getting them free. Not Americans.

He nearly ran me over, spilling all the lumber out of the bed into the street. Luckily I didn't have my 14 year old daughter with me that day.

Tourism is ruining a lot of small towns, as people look for areas to enjoy, or live, away from large towns. Sadly, though they look for areas to 'get away', they want all the conveniences of the big town, like grocery stores with all the latest and large choices, or they want high speed internet or more parking or big hotels....so do they really want to leave the big town??? I used to live on the coast of California. We knew it was tourist season because of the huge amounts of traffic, huge amounts of rude people, huge amounts of trash and lines at the one gas station we had. Our town swelled from under 500 to 10,000. Kid You Not. In tourist season, the shelves of our little grocery stores were near empty, as all the big RV's drive in, fill tanks, fill their ice chests/fridges with food from the stores that usually only have to feed less than 500 population. Our grocery stores (2) have parking places for 12 cars and 20 cars. We have three hotels, two campgrounds, so RV's park anywhere they can find, which looks really bad. Tourists really drives costs up for the locals. NOT fun living in a beautiful 'tourist' area.

About 20-30 migrants were caught in Traverse City by MSP. They were in fact deported. Our Governor doesn't care if you come here however sign up to become legal citizens. I moved from Wixom Michigan to San Francisco in 2004 and have not been back since. Now I reside in Oakland, to see the homelessness has reached far as Traverse City is so sad. I grew up fishing and camping in Northern Michigan.

11:22 growing up on Maui, Hawaii, I saw it first hand.
Everyone moved to Maui. They start as tourist and then become speculators that bought and sold the island.
Eventually it was all the newcomers or Malahini in Hawaiian the began trying to run everything.
It was the NIMBY sindrum and they were more concerned about maintaining their lifestyles.
So many oceanfront McMansions were owned by them and they would complain if someone walked by the ocean in front of their houses.
They believed they owned the beach out to the water.
    They didn't.
Public domain extends up on land forty geet from the high tide mark.
That didn't stop the entitled from complaining and trying to change the laws.

In public highschool there I remember taking interior design and we went on a field trip to classmates houses that would have private roads and elevators. A very stark contrast to my own reality. Flipped my world on its head. We drive past the pines all the time. The is a large problem of teen homelessness. I was one of them in 2013. The teen shelter is no longer running here. It was a safe haven when i got there. I focused on school and had adults around whose passions were to help kids. We are currently overwhelmed with growing a family, but it is a dream to help bring more support to the kids who live here. It starts with them and the influences around them. When i was homeless i was lucky I didnt fall into worse.

Homelessness. This happens when wages don't pay for housing. I watched your episode on homeless in America. I was surprised. The richest state California had the highest rate of homeless. The poorest state Mississippi had the lowest rate of homeless. So don't blame the poor for homelessness. It is a problem caused by the rich. The suck all the money out of the economy, buy up the property and raise the rent. Don't blame the victim.

I have lived in Traverse City for the majority of my life when my parents and I moved there in 1992. Had the pleasure of growing up here and it is definitely not the same. You can tell right where greed takes over and it's very unfortunate considering that tourism is the Industry they lean upon the most which has the lowest wages. It's getting to where people can't even afford the houses a half hour to an hour away that were once considered cost effective housing (minus the drive). Businesses are having a tough time finding people to hire that can afford to live in the area. Not good for the future of the Service Industry that drives the tourism sector in Traverse City.
Thanks for coming to our town!!! Was tickled pink to see the footage of the town I've had so many memories in over the years and how much everything has changed.
If you come back up to Traverse someday it would be awesome for my other half and I to meet you sometime. Totally understandable you couldn't do something like that on this visit, but perhaps another time we can hit up Union Street Station and some of the other restaurants and drinking holes around there! AirBnB took all the workforce housing for away. A lot of the housing in resort towns are second homes. When they are not being used as a second home, they are being used as vacation rentals or empty. There is a shortage of housing in resort towns. I use to live in some mountain towns in Colorado. I lived in Summit County and in Leadville. Leadville became more popular and more expensive, so I got priced out of there. There is a housing shortage in these resort towns. I would not blame this on homeless people, it is greed. Less fortunate people are just a scapegoat for a bigger issue. There is a shortage of workforce in these towns. It is hard to hire teachers, fill positions in grocery stores, hire essential workers like police officers and even doctors get priced out of some resort towns.

Traverse City wouldn't exist, at least in the way it does now, if not for Ford Motor Company.
Let me explain. Because of Detroit, the Motor City and all the major car manufacturers located there but especially Ford, people work hard for all their lives. Many are good with their money and saved alot of bank. People retire and where do they move to? Up North as we all say here. I know people who moved to Traverse City and other similar towns in the upper lower peninsula. Other than retirement there ain't diddly do dah squat for work up that way. People are either retired and rich or working class poor without a decent job or none at all. There is very little in between. Those who grew up and live up there want to come "downstate" to live. Those who have worked for the last 40 years socking away their money can't wait to get out of the big city and move "up north" to retire, relax, drink beer and plow snow.
Im sure this dynamic has taken place in many other states its just such a dramatic phenomenon here in Michigan.
