We've all seen how homeless camps have made our big cities much worse. Well, it's even happening in our small resort towns. I went to Michigan's Traverse City to find out more.

The most important issue debated in Congress currently is funding for overseas wars, not helping our citizens at home.
You got it but one thing...our country has the money, the powers at be can take care of everyone they don't want that
Remember,,they don't want that
Ukraine needs that money more than you. Zelenskyy only has 2 vacation homes
Yeah you can thank AIPAC for that
Yep, Biden even started his State of the Union off with saying we won't back down from helping Ukraine when we have 650k+ homeless Americans.
Homeless people everywhere in the USA. It shows we already are in a DEPRESSION, not a recession.
No it means we have a lot of people that cannot take care of themselves. Either way not my problem and they can suffer in the position they put themselves in
In the last couple of years, they are letting illegals come in by thousands when we have so many American homeless already and our economy is not good - inflation. Makes no sense whatsoever.

It's corporations buying up everything to air bnb or rent to people but usually short term.. that and people with 2nd homes that rarely get used.. and that.. it's the reason we don't have lower cost housing.. it's only government in the fact that we allow this shit to happen.. we need president by popular vote.. and stopping lobbyists being legal.. as well as term limits especially in the Supreme Court, congress, and senate
It’s happening now where I live in the suburbs of a big city. I never once saw a homeless person ever but now hundreds and hundreds of WORKING CLASS are living at the park n ride bus lots near the freeway due to substantial rent increases. My rent just got raised hundreds a month. Landlord won’t lower it because I called and asked. So I gave notice and am leaving. I either will have to sell my SUV, buy a pickup and a camper or work a job that includes housing. I vow I will NEVER rent again! It offers zero stability and I refuse to give my money to landlords.

Yet US govt casually spending hundreds of billions to israel where theres no homelessness & they got free healthcare lol
Imagine what it will look like once collapse is complete in another 25-50 years.
I live in a suburb of San Diego where our last mayor was AWFUL, as the homeless descended EN MASSE on our town and he was asked about what he would do to counter it, his response ? “What harm are the homeless doing to YOU?” Apparently he seemed to think it’s COMPASSIONATE to let homeless live in filth and desperation and drug addiction and crime vs getting a grip on the issue, or even trying to. So now he’s gone and we have elected a more conservative minded mayor who used to be a homeless drug addict in this very town and seems to at least think leaving them to live and die on the street isn’t compassion. It’s going to take years to try to turn around what poor leadership, draconian covid lockdowns, defunding the police , and making stealing less than 900 bucks worth of stuff a misdemeanor has done in 4 short, horrible, chaotic years.
You must be in El Cajon but that can’t be true because it’s always been a drug haven with people walking around talking to themselves. I’m an ex East County boy myself from Spring Valley and got the hell out of Coomiefornia

I live in the next town over from Hell and they are doing the same to my small town. Building all these subdivisions and when the people move from the city they want to turn the area into the same thing they moved from. It really ticks me off.
Even when i was homeless i was clean and well presented. No excuse unless u are strung out on drugs.
Politicians are more interested in funding wars than helping homeless Americans with pour tax dollars.
Guess which fills their pockets
May be there is homelessness because they are needing money to fund their wars, not to worry about progress in this country. Get cheaper labor and forget the people that will turn homeless from those choices.
Or siding-up with authoritarian dictators and white nationalists, while grifting public fear to line their own pockets.
Because they are all getting RICH off of these wars through money laundering! They don’t care about the citizens in the least.
More interested in illegal immigrants.
F*cking hell. This is getting atrocious.

A d it's only going to get worse for decades to come
Plenty of abandoned houses throughout the US that could be reclaimed but the government and renovated my charitable organizations and the persons that would be living in them. Maybe charge minimal rent for those that could afford it or just let people live there free for various amounts of time. So much cheaper then putting a homeless up in five star hotels like they are doing out of desperation in some cities. L
Right now illegal immigrants are talking about squatting in these houses themselves. So they will wind up getting them free. Not Americans.

I got carjacked by one of these tweakers on a BMX bike the other day. I was outside of my truck with it running loading some wood into the bed when your typical skinny homeless bmx tweaker in a hoodie rode up and pulled out a handgun and pointed it in my face. Rather than fight, I fled and he chased me for several yards before he stopped, went back to my truck and stole it along with my wallet that was in it, some cash, my metal detector and some tools. He nearly ran me over, spilling all the lumber out of the bed into the street. Luckily I didn't have my 14 year old daughter with me that day.

Tourism is ruining a lot of small towns, as people look for areas to enjoy, or live, away from large towns. Sadly, though they look for areas to 'get away', they want all the conveniences of the big town, like grocery stores with all the latest and large choices, or they want high speed internet or more parking or big hotels....so do they really want to leave the big town??? I used to live on the coast of California. We knew it was tourist season because of the huge amounts of traffic, huge amounts of rude people, huge amounts of trash and lines at the one gas station we had. Our town swelled from under 500 to 10,000. Kid You Not. In tourist season, the shelves of our little grocery stores were near empty, as all the big RV's drive in, fill tanks, fill their ice chests/fridges with food from the stores that usually only have to feed less than 500 population. Our grocery stores (2) have parking places for 12 cars and 20 cars. We have three hotels, two campgrounds, so RV's park anywhere they can find, which looks really bad. Tourists really drives costs up for the locals. NOT fun living in a beautiful 'tourist' area.
For everyone saying the problem is lack of affordable housing are mistaken. I worked in a homeless shelter and saw firsthand some of the dynamics. There's government subsidized housing, but there's prerequisites. You have to fill out an application, show some form of income and have a valid id. Some places require a clean drug screen. For a lot of folks, that's too much to ask.
They need housing.
I didn't say they don't deserve housing. I'm saying the problem isn't lack of housing, it's so much more.
Tell me this, if they trash a lot with garbage, what do you think they would do to a free house?
Not everyone that applies gets access to affordable housing.
the waiting lists are also years long even if you do qualify

Be useful and compile a list of all the empty corporately owned properties in the area. Those properties are fair game to the homeless or those with shhh housing
It's changed since I was a kid in the 70s plus the early 2,000s. I was shocked a few years ago. I have friends who moved to Lake Ann near Traverse City because they like the quiet life but yet want to go out sometimes too. Rumor has it a few rich people went on vacation to Traverse City back in the 90s and decided to build multiple hotels and resorts. It kinda ruined the small town feeling. About 20-30 migrants were caught in Traverse City by MSP. They were in fact deported. Our Governor doesn't care if you come here however sign up to become legal citizens. Michigan doesn't have the problem like New York, Illinois, New Jersey and some more Democratic run states. I live in the Grand Rapids area and it's one of the most expensive places to live in Michigan. Government overreach and big corporations are ruining our state. We have been somewhat stable when other states are failing.

Eventually it was all the newcomers or Malahini in Hawaiian the began trying to run everything.
It was the NIMBY sindrum and they were more concerned about maintaining their lifestyles.
So many oceanfront McMansions were owned by them and they would complain if someone walked by the ocean in front of their houses.
They believed they owned the beach out to the water.
They didn't.
Public domain extends up on land forty geet from the high tide mark.
That didn't stop the entitled from complaining and trying to change the laws.
Last year many volunteers came out to clean up the homeless camp in Traverse City. Within a couple of weeks it was trashed again. There was a fire there a few days ago. The main road was shut down. Lots of problems there!
In our town - same thing. The homeless left tons of ( and it was several tons ) of blankets and such in the fairgrounds horse stalls
What's up, Nick? Another fine video on our shit holes in the USA.
I was born and raised in a well known resort town. The same invasion is happening here. It's awful.
In public highschool there I remember taking interior design and we went on a field trip to classmates houses that would have private roads and elevators. A very stark contrast to my own reality. Flipped my world on its head. We drive past the pines all the time. The is a large problem of teen homelessness. I was one of them in 2013. The teen shelter is no longer running here. It was a safe haven when i got there. I focused on school and had adults around whose passions were to help kids. We are currently overwhelmed with growing a family, but it is a dream to help bring more support to the kids who live here. It starts with them and the influences around them. When i was homeless i was lucky I didnt fall into worse.
Clearly the world doesn’t need resorts it needs affordable houses
You can thank the democrats for that! They care more about the homeless migrants than they do the average working man who keeps the lights on in this country. I'm from NY I've worked in NYC I've seen it with my own 2 eyes.
At what point does a person should be responsible for their own well being?
@@Evolution_10_XNY’s right to to shelter applies to all. Lots of Americans live in their shelters. Now are they nice, ehhhh that is a different story.
@@NSgeg765they've been removed for illegals, same with a elderly apartment complex.
@@Jacklyn-zc8dc no the NYC city shelter system in place. No elderly apartment building has kicked anyone out for immigrants but it makes for a nice story.
The homeless situation is definitely sad, horrible, being ignored by elected crooked officials/politicians, but homeless or not, there’s no excuse for living like pigs! If their arms and legs work they can at least keep it neat. Disgusting.
Just watched your video here in NZ. Some of those homes are truly amazing and so big. We here are seeing homelessness rise, mostly are Mental Health users. A few years ago our National Party closed a lot of the MH residential centres and put them all out on the streets. What we are experiencing now is a ongoing trickle down effect.
What those old folks are saying is true all over the country. People moving in, high construction.. and the "more growth" crowd definitely winning. Here in NC, same thing going on, farms sold, developed, forests destroyed, rinse and repeat.
Been living 30 miles outside out Traverse for almost 10 years and I've seen the change first hand. 2020 was the catalyst for the yuppie invasion
GENTRIFICATION is a bane . the Yuppies, Techies and Californians move into cheap housing and the cost of rent goes sky high. and then they sell those homes for 10x what they paid for them. the poor have noplace to go.
What l don’t understand is how trashy and disgusting those tents are. I camp all the time outside, sometimes for months, and keep my site clean. I’m surprised they don’t have rats and other vermin.
It’s a reflection of their minds. Seriously.
I'm sure they DO have vermin problems.
The bears will be coming out of hibernation shortly...😉
It's not just Michigan it's all over America . Just pick a state you will find homeless folks the cost of rent is ridiculous . My heart breaks
For people
❤❤ mine to. No one should be homeless or hungry in this country
@@mariacherrington61920 AT LEAS T NOT CITIZENS, WHO ACTUALLY BELONG HERE.
Traverse City is freezing in the winter, I don't know how any bums live there.
People keep saying give them homes. Then the homes will look like this. 🤷
As a Cornish man, I appreciate the "pastie" mentions. 🎉
😋
The pines cleanup project was done last Thursday. That was Addiction Treatment Services and the local volunteers along with the police department.. it is quite cleaner at the moment.
So in the summer time the woods would be full of people living there for the tourist jobs. Then, they leave in winter.
This is the most accurate description of Traverse city on the internet. Every other video will only show you the glamour shots. There are some really glamorous moments, but most of it is this.
Are you suggesting most of Traverse City is covered by homeless tents? Not that I’ve seen as the ones we have here are hidden in the woods.
Homelessness. This happens when wages don't pay for housing. I watched your episode on homeless in America. I was surprised. The richest state California had the highest rate of homeless. The poorest state Mississippi had the lowest rate of homeless. So don't blame the poor for homelessness. It is a problem caused by the rich. The suck all the money out of the economy, buy up the property and raise the rent. Don't blame the victim.
I live directly west of you in Door County, Wi. Absolutely same bullshit happening here. Rich Chicago buying all of our properties and creating way too many high priced air b&bs huge problems with affordable employee housing. Getting worse
Last visited Door County in 2006ish. They were re-doing the roads at that time, those 2-lanes obviously couldn't handle the increasing traffic demands. I knew then it was being ruined and would never be the same. Such a shame, it was amazing.
The snow in the walmart parking lots are not drifts, They are plow piles, same as the little pile remaining by the side of the road.
They are probably all at work can't afford to live in these crazy tourist towns
I have lived in Traverse City for the majority of my life when my parents and I moved there in 1992. Had the pleasure of growing up here and it is definitely not the same. You can tell right where greed takes over and it's very unfortunate considering that tourism is the Industry they lean upon the most which has the lowest wages. It's getting to where people can't even afford the houses a half hour to an hour away that were once considered cost effective housing (minus the drive). Businesses are having a tough time finding people to hire that can afford to live in the area. Not good for the future of the Service Industry that drives the tourism sector in Traverse City.
Thanks for coming to our town!!! Was tickled pink to see the footage of the town I've had so many memories in over the years and how much everything has changed.
If you come back up to Traverse someday it would be awesome for my other half and I to meet you sometime. Totally understandable you couldn't do something like that on this visit, but perhaps another time we can hit up Union Street Station and some of the other restaurants and drinking holes around there! Really love your channel!!
Also thank you for showing us around Flint and Grand Blanc. Those are my family's roots
I grew up in Traverse City and lived there until the early 90's. Good times. Yup, union street, Dills, U & 1 and don't forget Brady's. My family lived right off 8th street. Walking downtown to the beach when there was one. Shopping at Millikens and the mall. 😊❤
30:14 Purchased a home just like this around 10 years ago for 120k. On zillow its going up for 230k. Housing prices are insane. That house in reality should be 120k max.
Edit: Keep in mind, a 1lake front 1k square feet 930's home in travers city with terrible irragation and just 1 acre will knock you out 2.5 million dollars. The economy is going to collaspe soon this is insane.
The growth at any cost people ARE winning. The sprawl is insane. Major highways are still 4 lanes in most places. They never plan for the infrastructure. It's all about building up with little other planning.
Prayers for the homeless in Traverse City . This video is heartbreaking. Thank you for having the courage to document this.
The MLS has “homes” in the homeless area starting at only $439,900.
If you’re homeless, ie. living in a tent in the woods, how long will it take to earn enough money for a down payment? As for mortgage approval, with a record of homelessness, you’re not getting it.
I'm from Traverse City. It's so sad. 😢
AirBnB took all the workforce housing for away. A lot of the housing in resort towns are second homes. When they are not being used as a second home, they are being used as vacation rentals or empty. There is a shortage of housing in resort towns. I use to live in some mountain towns in Colorado. I lived in Summit County and in Leadville. Leadville became more popular and more expensive, so I got priced out of there. There is a housing shortage in these resort towns. I would not blame this on homeless people, it is greed. Less fortunate people are just a scapegoat for a bigger issue. There is a shortage of workforce in these towns. It is hard to hire teachers, fill positions in grocery stores, hire essential workers like police officers and even doctors get priced out of some resort towns.
I can’t imagine paying resort town home prices and worrying about property values going down when the homeless camps take over….(and that’s just ONe issue that comes with this problem)
Maybe consider yourself lucky where you live
Man I miss Michigan. For anyone that’s moved away, for some reason there’s some nostalgia around the cold, cloudy, brown, and gloomy winters. I’m not sure why. I hated it when I lived there. It was depressing. I’m sure I’d hate it if I went back up there too. But still, I miss it, for some strange reason.
I moved back to Northern Michigan to be closer to immediate family, and I also enjoy the low crime rate, and the cops don't bust you for every petty offense they can find. I like being able to go for a walk at night without fear of being robbed or asked for money, etc.
I visited Traverse City maybe 12 years ago during the summer. It's was really nice and we spent one day on a sail boat when my children were young. Good memories
We went last aug. Would never go back. Sidewalks were 8 10 people deep. Hours wait to eat anywhere. Traffic was terrible.
I was born and raised in Mackinaw City, Mich. I moved in 1974 to Florida and have not been back to bury my mother in 1998. This is such a shock as it gets so cold in the Winter.
Even Norway, a northern country in Europe, usually gets a lot of snow, residents said, nothing this winter.
Do they throw their trash all over and live in filth like these people do?
The problem is that the cities didn't do anything when bums first started showing up. Now there are too many to do much about it. Good luck stuffing that genie back into the bottle.
I visited the National Music Camp for several summers, in Interlochen, and had an opportunity to see Traverse City, and the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, in the early ‘70’s. Traverse City was an exclusive community, which was so pristine and secluded during that time. It’s disappointing, but not surprising to see how it’s declined.
Nick is definitely not used to Midwest weather LOL. 25 degrees in the winter is all good my friend.
Another enlightening trip Nick. It really doesn’t shock me anymore, regarding the homeless encampment’s. The state of the economic collapse is everywhere. It’s just the beginning unfortunately. Stay safe, healthy, warm,& blessed.💯🫶🏾💕💜✝️🙏🏾🇺🇸
We change that by voting President Trump into the WH again.
THE HOUSES AND SNOW IS BEAUTIFUL AND PEACEFUL
Our family used to love exploring all the different Michigan areas. They each had their own beautiful, quirky, small town beauty. I won't go to those places anymore. I stick to the small towns far away from these places. Love "up north", just not the popular places.
Traverse City wouldn't exist, at least in the way it does now, if not for Ford Motor Company.
Let me explain. Because of Detroit, the Motor City and all the major car manufacturers located there but especially Ford, people work hard for all their lives. Many are good with their money and saved alot of bank. People retire and where do they move to? Up North as we all say here. I know people who moved to Traverse City and other similar towns in the upper lower peninsula. Other than retirement there ain't diddly do dah squat for work up that way. People are either retired and rich or working class poor without a decent job or none at all. There is very little in between. Those who grew up and live up there want to come "downstate" to live. Those who have worked for the last 40 years socking away their money can't wait to get out of the big city and move "up north" to retire, relax, drink beer and plow snow.
Im sure this dynamic has taken place in many other states its just such a dramatic phenomenon here in Michigan.
