Roland TR-8S v2.5/TR-6S v1.5 Firmware & TR-EDITOR Update Overview

  • TR-8S v2.5 and TR-6S v1.5 update load your Rhythm Performer with a stack of exciting new features. In this video, Dustin Good demonstrates the ins and outs of the new firmware and TR-EDITOR software updates.
    Both TRs add six FM-based drum models-kick, snare, tom, clap, percussion, and cymbal. These models include new editable FM parameters which can be controlled from both the TR hardware and TR-EDITOR software for creating intricate, evolving sounds.
    Rhythm tracks get a dose of unpredictability with a fresh sequencer update that adds probability, sub step probability, and master probability. Probability can bring your drum programming to life by setting percentage values to individual steps that dictate the chance of that step playing. The higher the percentage, the more that note will be played.
    Quickly assign new sounds to your pattern with random kit and random instrument. Create spontaneous sonic changes in patterns and then easily restore back to the original kit.
    Then run sounds through four new MFX options-Tone Fattener, Vinyl Simulator, Pitch Shifter Delay, and Ha-Dou Reverb.
    Plus, upgrade the TR-EDITOR software to version 1.5 for deeper control of the new FM, probability editing, and more.

    I love in the new update ! I still would love these features though :
    - make it USB audio/MIDI class compliant ! (especially the 6S which is "on-the-go" use case)
    - side-chaining between instruments (like on T-8)
    - chromatic note input on the instruments (like on T-8)
    - if you can bring the 303 model engine that would be sick ! (like on T-8).
    You've got your roadmap for v3.0 :) Big thanks & good luck to the dev team @ Roland.

    • @jayneural
      @jayneural Год назад +2

      @@djmattpositive it isn’t unfortunately. I know it sounds like an anomaly but it isn’t. Maybe you confuse with the MC-101 which got a firmware update adding class compliance.
      I agree with you that the 8S would also benefit from being class compliant.
      I don’t even know why they need a vendor driver on such devices. No one does that in 2022.
      Nothing prevents them from declaring all its inputs and outputs over usb generic driver technically.
      Once again this year they will have to update their vendor driver for it to work with the new operating system versions. So the time they spend on maintaining that proprietary driver, they won’t spend on new products and firmware maintenance/upgrade.

    • @djmattpositive
      @djmattpositive Год назад

      @@jayneural i hear you on the pointlessness of vendor drivers on devices. i'd guess that the propensity for a company to insist on proprietary drivers is tied to inertia/habit and an outdated and archaic way of thinking about 'control' and how a company should best maintain it - the old ways.

    Great additions! Not to sound ungrateful, but can we focus on some glaring basic UX omissions next like clearing/deleting patterns, kits and samples and easily reordering patterns, kits and samples in memory? These drum machines come preloaded with tons of factory preset patterns and kits - surely Roland doesn't think that we want to make music with these presets? Or think that we want to spend an eternity painstakingly deleting them all? Seems like something that could easily be added to the TR-EDITOR software? Would be great to be able to easily manage (drag-and-drop) our patterns, kits and samples on that pattern/kit selection screen.

    Excellent! The sound updates are beyond expectations! Would love to see probability also for velocity and timing offset as well down the road. My most wanted feature would be a performance enhancement in Beat Step Mode on the TR8S. I would like the performance pad to lock in step mode to the selected instrument, so like an easy snare or clap added to any step with the performance feature of the pad. This would make for easy rolls and builds for one instrument sound over the sequence. Love the ongoing updates!!!

    Suggestions for future updates:
    * Internal sidechain
    * Another LFO Source
    * Scales on the course controls
    * "Mute" mutes the incoming midi from a DAW, it seems to only mute the notes from the onboard sequencer
    * Ability to nudge drum hits off the grid
    * It would be really cool if you could use all the CTRL knobs to the active channel on the active menu eg INST Config, so we could control multiple parameters on a single instrument without having to manually change the single CTRL knob assignment, or navigate through the menu's with the encoder.

    Very happy to see an update as I was wondering if anything more was coming. Props on adding the probability on a per step basis, this was a much needed feature, and even more happy to see that the dev team went even beyond by adding the substep probability and master.
    With that said, there is one glaring hole that just about every owner has been asking for that I am shocked has not been addressed.
    r
    Without a doubt, the biggest is sample management. I really don't understand how it is that Roland is adding new effects and even updating the software editor without addressing sample management. Would be such a simple thing to take care of also. With the limited space of user stored samples and no disk streaming there needs to be sample management in the software editor to build kits and easily load them.
    a) allow software editor to build kits off of SD card samples.
    b) save kit name
    c) on TR8s click load kit "name" and it will load the samples for that kit off the SD card. If memory is full, it says so and we need to erase one of the currency stored user kits.
    Of coarse this could even be better achieved by allowing disk streaming from SD card but maybe that is not possible on T8Rs, but there has to at least be a better way to create, save, and load new kits with user samples.
    Overall, some really cool new features, but Roland really needs to address sample management,.
    Three wish list features would be.
    1. Swing on a per instrument basis. Only having master swing affecting all instruments is kind of useless.
    2. Ability to follow TR-Rec through the sequence. Meaning as the sequence progresses through A-H pages it will show the active steps for the selected instrument rather than always being locked onto one page at a time.
    3. Micro adjust timing forward or backward on a per step basis for more off the grid control.
    Hope to see more in the future. I love the TR8s and with just a few more minor tweaks it really could be one of the best drum machines ever made. SAMPLE MANAGEMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even Korg figured it out with the Volca Sample 2.

    However, I would still like to see a full blown ASDR pitch envelope feature added for all of the ACB drums and user samples sound engine in a future update. I would love to be able to bend the pitch of my 808 bassdrums down by a certain degree on every trigger (based on the pitch envelope settings I make, of course) tobimitate what a real TR808 long decay kick does naturally and similar to the pitch bended long decay kick on the Arturia Drumbrute Impact. Actually for the MV-1 instead of probability, "trigger conditions" would make more sense. Like being able to trigger notes only during the first, second, third or forth time or every odd or even time a section plays.
    As an example, currently I am working on something where I ran out of sections. With trigger conditions I could at least free up 2 sections, because the difference between the sections are some added cymbals on the 1st, 5th and 7th bar. With trigger conditions I'd set them to trigger only during the 2nd time the section plays. Probability is too random for that.

    Roland are you going to add part nudge to the sequencer?? there's already physical nudge buttons on there, just hold shift to use them to nudge the kick track left or right etc

    Great Roland! ❤🧡💛🤍
    But, why you din't add random for individual instrument pattern, not type of sound?
    Please ...
    P.S: Euclidean rhythm generator, will be perfect ...

    On the TR909 VST you can create a drum pattern, then drag and drop your pattern as audio, but crucially, you can also drag and drop the pattern from the VST as MIDI aswell which is an amazing tool to have at hand, however, you still cant do this with the TR8S Editor for some reason?
    Is this something you plan on doing with the TR8S editor as this would be incredibly useful, surely its possible to implement?

    dang, really sick, but would love to see ‘nudge per step’ instead of whole pattern… micro timing per step PLEASE!

    TR editor doesn’t work on M1 MacBook with Mac OS Monterey unfortunately. Tried different cables, ports, made sure the driver was install and not detecting device. TR8S has the latest firmware as well 😢

    All these great updates only serve to make it all the more heartbreaking that there's no way to shift the steps in a pattern so as to reposition the one. I like to build up patterns from euclidean claves, so there's no telling where I'm going to want the one to be until I'm reasonably far into the process, with accents and sub steps already set, so it's bound to take ages to shift the pattern, manually, track by track. I guess I could make this process slightly less painful if the machine let me import MIDI, but it doesn't. The new MCs have been updated to allow for both one-shift and MIDI import, so I end up writing everything on them, then painstakingly copying the resulting patterns over to TR-6s, so as I can take advantage of the ACB. A long spell of unbecoming grunt-work, the sort of thing we ought've left behind in the last century.

    Hello Roland! Suggestion for Sequencer of TR-8S. Your's sequencer have many great function like FLAM and Substep, but for users who prefer play live it's useless. Fox example - i have your's 2 great device MC-707 and TR-8S, i play with MC pad on TR drums, but all i can a record it's simple lengh like 1/2/4/8/16 no rolls, no flam's. Maybee have a chance add this function fur INST REC in future it really helpful for live musicians, your's product's is great, thanks!
