In the " old days " all the trims, end points, travel direction, etc were set up in the mechanical linkages on your plane so your transmitter could fly as many models as you wanted. All the modern ghizmos are not absolutely necessary, unless you are a dedicated competition flyer. I plan to convert some of my old radios and all they have is two gimbals, and maybe a fifth channel switch. It was good enough then, and it's still sufficient now.
