She would have already become a citizen by marrying one...unless Ellen isn't one herself that is....But I'm pretty sure she is. So why did Portia have to go through that? Was it just a formality?
Those citizenship tests are really hard! I'm English (born and raised) and we were learning about immigration in class and we thought it would be fun (as a class) to take the uk citizenship test and we failed! So even though there were 30 15/16 year olds who were all born and raised in England and a teacher who is 30+ also born and raised in England and we still failed!
@indyracingnut My only guess is because it's a same-sex marriage, she had to formally petition and study to become a citizen due to the Defense of Marriage Act, that's only my guess though.

But because their marriage isnt seen as a marriage by most states. you have to have lived in US for 5 years before you can start I dont know why portia waited for like 15.
