I was thinking the same thing but really thinking about it I think what she means is when you say or do something hurtful/degrading to someone to get a laugh out of other people. Giving someone a bit of a scare or embarrassing them a bit is very different.
I'm sorry Ellen had to go thru so much pain, hiding some big secret for so long, but really it did so much good. People like me who had been brought up to be uptight and judgmental got to read her book, enjoy her comedy, and fall in love with her first. Then we found out she was gay, and we could realize that hey it's cool to be gay if someone awesome like Ellen is gay. It helped me learn to go way past mere tolerance and really embrace people who are different from me.
Ellen seems refreshingly honest with how she copes with the stress of making, having, expectations, of what she had experienced while building a great chance at the opportuntines she had in life to be uno of comic future: making a real sucessful living ????, really?
