Connecting the nations............ please welcome............ Dr. John..
What an amazing version of this song! I wish I'd seen this sooner! :D
good lawd almighty what a badass
You got that right !
Shannon Powell!
Words by Leadbelly, but the melody & chords come from New Orleans piano king James Booker.
Me, I like this version better than the Leadbelly/Weavers original.
tandmark thanks for remembering James Booker. He was one of Mack's biggest influences. I'm a NOLA native myself. Loved that guy!
tandmark Booker was my favorite NOLA piano player.
Son of the Bayou
the dude has allot of it.... like the greats out there.... goddamn if i know what it is ... i go some though... not allot
Stage side panels look like some Peter Max stuff : )
You can’t help tap your feet...such a great cover.....on par with James Booker on this one 😀
I think Mac would quietly smile at that -- all the NOLA pianists were in awe of Booker.
But this is a great performance, It's a pretty physical piece to play and Mac used to do it pretty much until he stopped performing. So I wasn't in any way detracting :)
@@timp9560 It has a brilliant drive to it....the rolls under the fingers....he nails it!
@@axs203 Indeed ir does - but I did have the pleasure of seeing Booker perform this piece 3 times !!!!!! I talked to Allen Toussaint about Booker and asked him if he ever messed around with some of that stuff. He raised an eyebrow and said ''I don't try to go there and laughed' . Thing about Dr John is that he distilled so many influences and put his own spin on it. The great thing about NOLA pianists is you can hear a direct line from Jelly Roll through Tuts Washington / Longhair / Huey Smith / Fats - much underated /Mac / Allen / James Booker and all of them had something unique!! 2 left in my mind Tom McDermott and Jon Cleary - who again puts a new spin on the old stuff. And I guess I should have mentioned Salvasore Doucette and Frank Fields as well - the list is endless.
@@timp9560 That is quite something you saw James Booker Tim! Amazing. you are very lucky. He has been a big influence on me. I can almost get away now playing Goodnight Irene on the piano. It is in Db which isn't the easiest. Since learning it I have come to appreciate why this tune is played it in that key! When I saw this Dr John version I thought...that has a bit of backbeat and a bit rocky.....I love the ending of this as well with him going down and down. I sent this performance to quite a few people when he died. I thought it was so terrific.
