  • New EV ABARTH 500e : 1st look at Fiat's feisty electric hot hatch. Jonny Smith takes a first look at the first ever full EV Abarth, the 152bhp 155-mile EV promising better all round performance than the 695 Abarth turbo. This is the £38,695 launch edition, known as the Scorpionissima, which hosts 18-inch wheels, a sound effect to simulate the engine, funky decals and an Alcantara sports interior.

    Wanted to compliment you on how you do product integration on the show. You're doing it yourself naturally as part of the video, rather than voiceover. The product endorsement is part of you looking at the car. The product you're endorsing is natural to your audience. I normally skip these things in videos, but watching you do it is actually watchable - and that is absolutely high praise.

    I haven't read the comments as I'm always catching-up with these quality videos.
    I would paint the lower front grilles in black to visually lower the appearance.
    I'd had the idea of a sound generator many years ago - I want a car to have a great soundtrack, but I don't wish to force passersby to share in the noise. Simply pipe it into the cabin and I'd be happy with my V12 Fabia!
    Thanks for another great launch, Jonny 👍

    With motors being so compact, it would be nice if they put it in the rear with RWD, that would really make a point of difference with it's competitors. The only space lost would be the place the cables are kept, but a small frunk could replace that. Then it could have "drift mode" lol.

    As an abarth driver, I think it looks great and is quite a desirable thing. Not sure on the hilarious sound effects but fear the biggest issue is the price (considering this is a small hot hatch). Don't think it could ever be as magic as the piston car, but a cool EV. Great vid as always Johnny!

I've had the odd post-rust era Fiat [Tipos] and enjoyed their fun. I feel like I want that little Abarth Electric like I wanted a Triumph Bonneville, but I was 5 years old at the time, or a Garrard 401/SME 3009 when I was a young teenager [hifi nerds only need apply to that dream]. On my 2015 I removed the back seats and placed a delete kit turning it into a legitimate two-seater sports car which gave me much more room in the boot. I reckon engine sound 'ringtones' will become a common feature on EVs in the future. Any EV could sound like any ICE engine. They could also have the torque & power characteristics of any car too. Think Gran Turismo garage, but for real. After all, what do petrolheads really like? The sound and character of an engine, or looking at it...? Sadly, the 500e, and particularly this Abarth, are priced as the polar opposite from the original intention of the original 500 pricing & market... There are no EVs priced for the 'ordinary' buyer, a huge gap in the market.

I test drove the La Prima version of the standard 500E convertible and liked it a great deal but that was over £30K and £550/month on lease as in just too expensive to get any cost saving benefit from it so had to pass. Dodge are going to do all that engine revving synthesiser stuff on their EV Hellcat apparently. If it needs to make a loud noise at least have it sound like a spaceship, the real petrol heads aren’t going to convert to EV because of some audio fakery. Just insecurity from the manufacturers IMO😂

    There's some really good hot hatch EVs out or on their way. I'd like to see a revised Honda e, I know there's a new MINI EV coming out. The Cupra Born and Peugeot 208 are great options too. Personally I would wait for the Renault 5 or Alpine version instead of this Abarth.

    Sound effects turned off for me, that's absolutely awful.
    The rest of it however? I think that would be the perfect electric car for me. Small city car, hopefully fun to drive, decent range and fast charging. That's the way EVs can be desirable, not the massive cars with huge batteries. The cabrio would probably add to the fun as well.
    Now let's see if Honda makes a Type R e...

    Always loved the 500. Only every driven a 595 edition and loved it. Reminded me of my old Lupo GTi (I really miss that car). This, as much as my wife would hate it, would definitely become part of our required two car garage maybe in the blue to get it past the finace department, but i want the green. Pity there isn't an Orange edition.

    Dear god. That rock guitar sound was Carlo Abarth spinning in his grave! Seriously though, I'm concerned they've missed a trick here. I bought a Mini E primarily because out of all of the small evs, which mostly drive like rather dull shopping trolleys- bouncing around B roads with little to no road feel- the Mini drives brilliantly, felt grown up yet lively, has quick steering and is quicker in reality than on paper (I get 6.8 / 7 seconds 0-60). I have been a car guy for ever and assumed that EVs would be the death of hot hatches, the mini has taught be that doesn't have to be the case. If you set a car up well it doesn't matter if theres no sound, the experience of quick steering combined with good regeneration and lively performance, makes a cracking little hot hatch. However, I can't see this Abarth achieving that. Unless the engineers have focussed on those essentials, I can't see this replacing my Mini. Gimmicks galore and seemingly aimed at the sort of person who likes to look 'sporty' rather than experience an entertaining drivers car. Oh and the elephant in the room- THAT PRICE!!! When you can buy a new Mini E, which betters this Abarth in pretty much every dept (inc range, the mini will actually do its quoted 145 mile range, I can't see this doing that), why would anyone in their right mind spend

    I've worked on electric vehicle projects since 2015 and have heard so many different EVs with cool/futuristic electric motor noises, it's a crime OEMs are still synthesising engine noises - and shows they're not really fully committed to EVs imo

  • @dave4803
    @dave4803 Год назад +3

    They've ruined it, with push button gear select rather than a more sporty knob and a hateful electronic hand brake they've taken what was a nippy and fun little car and turned it into a laptop.
    Real drivers want the old school feel and sporting connected driving experience.
    If they wanted to drive a car that feels like playing a game they would buy a PC and do that as it's cheaper.
    Edit.
    Nearly 40 grand for that? It is pretty much a shrunk down Teala with different badges.
    The whole point of the Fiat 500 it was simple and cheap motoring in a fun little car.
    This isn't simple, nor cheap nor driver focused like a more basic car.
    Only 155 mile range for that price? It is too much money, too many electronic toys and not close enough to it's predecessor.
    This is why people are put off EV's.

    I mean, the idle sound does sound pretty convincing. But the proof will be in the acceleration...will it sound right or will it sound like a synthetic washing machine from gran turismo.
    Id be interested to hear how they actually create and model the sound. I wonder if they have performed some kind of digital twinning exercise whereby they can extract the right kind of noise for the given speed, pedal inputs and acceleration.

    As a long time owner of a custom Abarth, the one thing I feel is lacking with such EVs is the ability to tune their engines. While this EV is reportedly faster round a track, when compared to a standard 695, it would not have a chance keeping up with a non standard tuned and customised version. Despite that, if I was in the market to buy a hot hatch EV then this would be the one I would go for.

    • @MrAdopado
      @MrAdopado Год назад

      Sort of ... but some EVs do have "track mode" options and "acceleration boost" options some do have 3rd party produced hardware/software components providing more power (though these will obviously risk voiding warranty but that's the same for ICE cars too). All cars can potentially benefit from any suspension damping, brakes upgrades of course. As more cars become out of warranty no doubt people will start doing more serious tinkering! I don't think EV need be the end of customised cars ... but we'll see over time.
