I have the Firecrafter FC7 in my camp bag and I love it! I can split up kindling and create tinder with it better than any other knife I've owned. HOWEVER...there are times when a "more precise" knife would come in handy. This knife looks like it would pair really well with my FC7. Tasks like cutting up your dinner, carving or any other kind of fine work are soo much easier with a smaller blade.
Totally!
Not gonna lie the "just look at it!" Brought me back to my childhood haha
Haha! I am glad someone got the joke
Excellent joke😂
Would you just look at it
I haven't picked up a new fixed blade in a few years, this one however is one I think I'll invest in. Thanks for sharing and keep on doing that thing you do!
Glad I could unpack it for you
I had my suspicions, but a 5.11 retail employee told me that the 5.11 running shoes were no good. I appreciated the honesty, and bought a different recommendation with confidence.
We will find out, just bought a pair.
That sheath is great if you want to carry the fire steel with it, however, I would probably pick up an Armatus Carry Architect for it. I have one for my M1 backpacker and it's great for horizontal belt carry.
while I have not had the chance to work with Magna-cut yet, I have heard nothing but good about it. I do like the size, and details of design on this blade. as a traditionalist I appreciate the classic styling. My hand span is 3-7/8" so I can see that handle being uncomfortable with harder use. I don't mind the pancake sheath, but I would prefer an option of a dangler. where I live you can not have a fixed blade concealed, there is no length restrictions, but the law says it must be worn "on your belt, and in a visible manner" all things considered, this is a very well thought out blade. I like it.
Great review. Picked one up last week to go with my Ursus 45.
that's a nice simple functional design
Also, thank you and 5.11. My wife and I bought the new hiking packs yesterday (a Mother's Day present). We are anxious to try them out. I think I own half a 5.11 store in pants, packs, accessories, hoodies, travel bag, etc. They have a store too, too close to me so I visit it often and, especially, for the 20% off sales.
Right on! 👍
@5:38. I know that 5.11 Store; not far from me in north OKC.
That is awesome!
I have one and love it. I agree, with you Aaron, the grip/handle could be longer. I have a 3.75" span and in certain positions, that tang does not feel great. In other positions, I end up with a three-finger grip and life is good. Overall, I'm glad I own this knife and I did get a Taco-style sheath with a clip for pocket carry. I feel special. :))
Ya, I am going to try to include my hand width in my videos. Cool, taco is the way to go with a knife like this.
Taco style for this one. Anything bigger I’d go pancake
I have this knife and it is great. I also have an Asher Fixie and I tend to carry the Fixie more. A bit more compact and a better stop for the hand at the heel of the blade. Steel is S30V on that one, which is great.
such a nice knife and package included in the great price! W
I have the White River M1 BackPacker Pro (S35vn) & like it enough. I'd hope that this one might fit my medium sized glove hands!
would love to see a detailed comparison with (food preparation, bushcraft, etc..) the jackalope model
Leather pocket sheath / ditch the lanyard hole.
Great review! Love the cub! Truth about the handle. Could be possible to add/make full length replacement scales.
That would be great!! And make it perfect
The esse is just an ugly knife imo.
To each their own but the esse sells very well. Very popular knife
I have a collection from LTWright to Andy Roy fixed blades. I’m on the waiting list for the White River Cub. Lt Wright makes sweet kydex sheaths, just saying.
Lol in this economy no I don't know how capable it is..can't afford one. Wish I could, but really enjoy your content.
Armatus carry sheaths are perfect for this knife for the other carry solutions!
That is totally true!
Great review. I have been waiting for you to review this knife. I have the Ursus 45 and love it. However, I compare all my knives in this compact size to my Lionsteel H1 and H2. Those are my main belt carry knives. I am interested in a pocket carry fixed blade and this would be a nice choice but, I agree with you, I would have to make a different Kydex sheath for it. That sheath is way too big for a pocket carry. Maybe attach it to the Ursus 45 sheath as a piggy-back setup??? Anyway, great review. I appreciate you and all your reviews and advice.
Ya, if I have the Ursus 45 I am not also taking the cub, it would be one or the other.
I got mine yesterday. It’s amazing and I love it. However, I wear a 2xl glove and the handle is just way too small for me.
Yeah, that’s what I was concerned about for a lot of people. That’s why I definitely took the time to discuss that in the video. They just made it a little bit bigger would’ve been perfect.
I wants something like its big bro with a clip point a fuller and a bit of more of a swell around the end of the handle.......
Wow, and priced WAY out of my price range. And just what is the make up of Magna-Cut steel?
Here is a full breakdown knifesteelnerds.com/2021/03/25/cpm-magnacut/
G'day Aaron, 3-4 in. is definitely ideal to pair with a BK-9, with a machete I'll go up to 5-6 incher, i.e roughly half, perhaps 1/3 at minimum, the length, of the primary tool.
I did go through a small fixy for EDC phase, but it got a bit silly just for household chores and the like, particularly when most of my folders are of the beefy variety.
Pancake or taco is fine by me, but either way, needs to be a "belt high" or lower dangler ride.
Yeah the handle length is a no-go personally.
This one's very much in the "close, but no cigar" category IMO.
Cheers Duke.
P.S. Gerber would to well to bring back the Gator Premo, one of the best ergos and grip, (especially in the wet), of any blade I own. The S30 is great, though since Magnacut is all the rage .....................
Oh the handle issue keeps me debating. It’s not that I’m lacking in knives.
I’d like to see the original size go up against the Architect 5.5. I love saber grinds.
Man. That beak with the lanyard hole is disappointing. I like everything about that knife, but I measured my hand after you measured yours. My paw is almost a half inch wider. No dice. I wish it was just a 4" handle at least
That's why he does the measurements. Some people joke about it, but imagine if you'd bought this expensive ass knife and didn't like it because it doesn't fit your hand
I love mine! Great tool!
Minis, compact versions better for smaller stature people and youth
I still prefer Ballbearing steel, or Vanadis 4 Extra, to Magnacut or any other steels (Even 3V). That's because you get way better performance from both of them. They are easy to field sharpen, yet they hold their edges literally forever, and never take any kind of edge damage. For fixed blades, it can't get any better! Magnacut can only provide more stain resistance, however on everything else (which matters more), Magnacut can't come close, to the steels I mentioned.
PS If I'd go fishing, I'd get any stainless steel knife.(Probably a cheap one).
Glad you brought up the handle and measured your hand. I bought a schwarz confidante after watching your review, I"m selling it because while the knife is perfect the handle is very small. I measured my hand after seeing you video and my hand at the same spot is 3.75 inches across. I was thinking about getting an overland but now I"m not so sure, I don't think it has enough handle either. Any suggestions?
I was thinking about this knife as well, but after you say the handle is small, forget it. I don't want to the larger knives, I need something with about 3.5 inches of blade but 4.5 to 4.75 inches or usable handle, I think I"m going to hold off on the schwarz stuff and maybe get the Buck Alpha in magnacut that looks about right. Feels like I"m looking for a needle in a haystack.
Man I am sorry to hear that. Then I would say both of TJ designs are too small for you. Some edc fixed blades with big handles that have reviewed are the buck alpha series, Boker Bronco mini, anv knives P200. I am doing a full run down video in the next few weeks on a ton of small fixed blades.
@@gideonstactical Thanks for the reply, I hold off and wait for that video before I do anything else.
This or the TRC Polheim?
Tough this one is good and $150. The Polheim is going to have a longer handle and slimmer sheath.
I really wish u would review some Dawson knives. They are phenomenal blades that don’t get a lot of attention for some reason.
I’ve been eyeballing them as well. I might pick one up soon.
I will give my review.
1. I have had knife, stick, entrneching tool , kukuri, folder . . .fighting training.
2. I have three Dawson swords, two in wood sheaths of my design.
3. About 35 years ago I had a very special application for a combat knife and commissioned Barry to make it. I was widowed with a small child and didn't want any firearms around. On two of the three bedroom door hooks, a Barry Dawson knife resides, upside down in a sheath.
I love my Guardian 3 by Bradford as my edc fixed blade. Do you think it could hold its ground in this lineup?
Potentially, I would need to get in
Don't waist your money on 511 gear. It is a rip off enough said.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, the GT viewers would have to disagree. 1.7 million views on 5.11 gear over the years. Of course not every item is a banger, but many of my most used packs and pouches and pants are 5.11 that have last for years.
I have to agree. Used to work for them and they're stuff is going down hill just like people who run the company
@@gideonstactical My pants fell apart in one year, easy duty, several pairs. different colors, and models. Great concept but poor performance. Maybe changes have been made but I have BDUs issued in the 90s, hard daily use that faired better. I do enjoy your work and candor.
I’ve had 2 pairs of 5.11 pants put em through hell just 2 pairs look great till this day and are rotated cause I wear them daily . Use cold water to wash no softeners or added crap just mild detergent no loose threads or tears
@gideonstactical you have to admit they are super overpriced and alot of their stuff just copies patagonia
can you make review ursus cub vs firecraft fc3.5?, i think i will choose fc3.5 with magnacut
Very good vid brother 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Looks kinda like the Joker nomad, a smaller version
How is it for food prep? Alot of folks use yes their “bushcraft” for food prep. Should as that as a test. Your welcome
Just my opinion, I don't think it's ideal.
Blade is reasonably thin, so it can definitely cut food, but the wrong shape; most of the blade wouldn't reach a cutting board.
Agreed!
It’s not bad, but a thin FFG is the best for the camp kitchen!
Dang. Another one for the short list 🤑
It’s very nice!
can you compare the white river ursus cub to trc polheim?, i personally prefer 4 inch blade over 3.5
The I life the blade geometry of the Ursus more bit the TRC has a smaller kydex sheath, longer handle and blade.
What Boker model was that in the video ?
Mini bronco
I've been trying to decide between the cub and the cencillo. I want the one best suited for hunting. To be honest I'll probably have both eventually.
Are you from OKC?
Nope
@@gideonstacticalyes you are!
Anybody know somewhere the Ursus cub is in stock?
They should be in stock any day. I spoke with White River and they were supposed to be in stock this week.
Stand in the loop I will post a community post and link when they go live.
@@gideonstactical thanks Aaron!
Magnacut. 💀
Like the knife. Wish they would have not ground the spine and left stonewash finish. I don't care about striking ferro rods with my edc. Same reason i don't like bradfords horrid laser cut marks left on the edges of their knives. Just looks like an unfinished knife and their reasons for leaving it make no sense.
Doesn't honestly prove anything its how you use a knife that matters
Great, you get one copper knife to last your whole life. Good luck
Fun fact white river actually makes the esee Sencillo
Also kabar has the bk16 in magnacut now
www.dlttrading.com/white-river-knife-tool?ref=29 yes here is the Ursus 45 in both 3V and s35vn
@Ben.Simon.ActualI absolutely love white river products I got one the first ursus45 number 176 I got it when they only came with leather sheaths bout the kydex later also the esee 6 plate clip will fit the kydex sheath if you don’t want it floping with the dangler. They have a great customer service just outstanding company
@Ben.Simon.Actual I got the white river pko from Duluth trading last year black Friday they had 40% off everything on the site. Rides a little high on the belt only complaint
@Ben.Simon.Actual it’s cool with me lol as long as I can score deals haha they use to have the 3 models they moras too
So glad you showed a hand measurement. I’ve been really jonesing for one of these, but I don’t need another 3-1/2 finger grip knife. Just ordered an Ursus 45 instead. For a small fixed blade I’m happy with my Guardian 3, but I’d never expect to do serious extended work with it. I like little knives, but the reality is my mitts just aren’t sized for them.
Seems like a custom set of handle scales would solve the issue there. Just have the lanyard hole pass through the scales like on so many other knives.
I own the Sencillo I love it too much to consider the Cub… I also own the Ursus 45 and 2 Model 1”s White River and Esee are prolly 2 of my Fav production knife makers.. the Sencillo is an awesome combination and works just about perfect and sits in my opinion as one of the top best EDC fixed blades to ever exist…!!!! I love my A-2 version…. One of my fav steels..!!!!
The Sencillo is made by White River for Esee. It's one of the only Esee knives that Rowen doesn't make for them.
Correct 👍
Some of their folders if not all are Taiwan And I ve had both sizes with diffrent steels.. just as good as my esse 3 and 6 in respect to steel difference.
Their exspact stuff is condor I believe
Does anyone know of other colonies that use Rowen?
I’m glad White River is getting some extra business making these knives for other companies (I think the do the Republic for Cold Steel and the Lulu for Knafs) but I hope to see more original designs from them in the future.
@@kpfagerberg I agree. They're a great, family owned company, but I believe they're torn between carrying too much expensive stock, and having too many models. I can understand their position. You don't want to have 50 models with thousands of knives made for each model. You'll end up holding more overhead in backstock than selling what people buy.
@@roostershooter76 I respect them for releasing models slowly and thoughtfully. Hopefully business picks up and they can release some more
*You're not credible. You say the same thing about every knife.*
Ok
@@gideonstactical *No, it's not OK. It doesn't make it any easier or helpful to choose a new knife. You should have your own opinion; don't praise everything that comes your way. Some knives are better just because they feel better in the hand.*
For edc fixies I definitely prefer taco in the pocket with an ulticlip or taco at the appendix. My favorite edc sheath is still the leather sheath that came with the Creely Mako. It lets you deep carry in the pocket and you can't even feel that it's there.
Do you think they will make the ursus 45 in Magnacut?
I‘ve asked them. They are not planning on doing the 45 in Magnacut.
I have a cheap leather sheath source for this knife if anyone is interested. Unfortunately these kydex sheaths scratch the blades unnecessarily. My fc3.5 has some deep scratch marks just from using the kydwx sheath and i do clean out the sheath on a regular basis. Leather=no unnecessary blade damage
Using your knife will also typically scratch it
@@Arto257 wow really I didn't know. Thanks....
Just ordered black polished micarta scales from
Carrols custom scales.
Covers the full tang and has the full “coke bottle shape.
Hey gideon, i’ve got a question about your’e sweater. What brand is it? That sweater you using is pretty cool. Greats from Belgium brother.
While I may carry different combinations.. nothing will ever replace a folder in my pocket, no matter what combo I carry.
Armatus carry makes a taco sheath, I'm seriously considering this knife and that sheath.
Everyone raves about Magnacut and most people compare edge retention to M390/20CV and toughness to S35VN. Would like to see your opinion on how all of these rank based on performance. Throw S45VN in that convo as well. I am of the mindset that 99% of the world would likely not notice the difference in performance. All of these steels are exceptional.
I agree, honestly I think the only way anyone would ever truly know the difference is in extreme use which is very rare anyways. Besides that, how easy it is to sharpen and take care of is really what matters most. I’ve heard people say some steels get sharper than others but I think that’s just how thin the knife is behind the edge. I have a knife with chaves liberation in m390 and a pm2 in s45vn and they both do what they need to great! Only difference is I love how easy s45vn is to sharpen compared to m390 so I usually don’t let my m390 knife get dull to begin with.
@josephlilley9249 My favorite blade is probably my PM2 in M390. Spyderco does such a great job with their steels. I find it just as easy to sharpen as some of my S35VN blades, but the edge retention is way better. That said, I prefer a blade that is easier to maintain with higher toughness. You can sharpen a dull blade, but chipped blades are a pain in the rear-end
It's extremely easy to tell how well knives hold their edges. They either go fast, last a while, or last a long time. Knife steels roughly in the same range won't show easily.
knife prices show how boutique the community has gotten. Nobody needs a knife that expensive for opening amazon boxes.
Yeah, which is why this is a capable fixed blade, not a flipper. This isn't for Nancy boys opening their mail.
Hey, big manly-man, if you need a "capable fixed blade" for when you're wrestling tigers or whatever it is you're so high and mighty about, the ESSE 4 or Becker BK16 haven't gone anywhere, don't crowd big hands, and are half to 3/4s the price.
Absolutely love my cub!!!! For me it feels capable of doing bigger knife things in a very compact package . For reference I have a Lionsteel t6 and a Reiff f5 , other then splitting wood the cub is basically just as capable.
Nice!!!
Is the F5 in 3V or magnacut? How do you like it? I’ve been wanting to get a 3V F3 or F4 but theyve been sold out for so long.
F5 is 3v so far I’ve been completely happy with it . The handle is perfect and with an armatus dangler it carries very well
Yessssss been waiting for this one
say no to tacos
I carry the Ursus 45 ... mine rolled nipping small limbs of a 2 inch piece of bamboo... it was replaced promptly by white River....i have had many high quality knives, white River is second to none in my book for the money .
It is a legend!
sold.!
Great video! What is that jacket you’re wearing?
I have a few jackets, but the one at the start is my outdoor research ferrosi hoodie.
The Esee Sencillo is actually made by White River.
Correct
The sencillo is produced for Esee by white river knives
Correct
Every time I see it, I can't help but think how ugly the Sencillo is. Not to mention the glaring weakness of most ESEE products - the handle.
Hahah the cub has the looks!
It really is a butt ugly knife. That handle....
That blade is speaking my language
I like the way Survive Knives does the hole for tying cord onto the handle, kind of hidden under handle. I really like Ursus 45 but haven’t been able to find this one for over a month. Thank you.
www.dlttrading.com/white-river-knife-tool?ref=29 here is the link page one has the 3V version and page two has the s35vn
@@gideonstactical I didn’t write my comment well. I own the Ursus 45 and love it but can’t find Cub.
I find that a small lanyard on mine helps with the hot spot!
Thanks for your videos. Love watching them!
Good tip
Been waiting for the next drop for a couple months. Looking forward to competing with all your fans. 😭
Great video and now even more set on getting this beauty
Right on!
Aaron, i just got a m4 bailout. Mainly due to your recommendation (among others). Thank you for highlighting quality products, and not just pumping Chinese mystery metal on your audience. Moving forward, this is the way. 🫡🇺🇸
Awesome to hear it! That is still one of my top favorites
