URM Academy Band is awesome. Thanks for posting this.. I would normally have trouble getting into this.. Mainly because of the screaming. I'm tired of screaming. It has a place for sure, but it's simply too abrasively hostile all the time and often takes away from the music. Some might prefer I keep my opinion to myself, but there it is.
I've talked to Mario during The Way Of all Flesh Era, and he told me that he didn't play with a click at all live and even in the studio, they like to preserve the feel with little tempo variations...Cheers from France we love you URM guys
I didn't like the recording of the vocals on oroborus though, sounded like a robot and It wasn't really for me haha but everything everywhere else on the album is 👌🏻
Nader Zein me too man. I think this band's success, aside from their innovation and technique, comes from the little details that they put in every one of their works
It's like the first time I ever learnt about double tracking, how I always knew i was hearing two voices at the same time I just didn't really know it, and then I learnt about double tracking vocals and I can't stop hearing two voices simultaneously. so much to learn from watching these unboxing videos
I'm learning pitched screams right now and I'm recording them myself... I've listened to this song thousands of times and I've never heard this. My mind just got blown out of the water
I first heard them live back in 2019, I was in disbelief how good they were… the bass player was going wild doing spins, intense head banging, etc. at like 35 to 40 degrees (100 to 105 Fahrenheit)
1:35 makes me laugh. Dude says he's gonna show you how great Mario is then proceeds to play arguably the most simple beat he's ever played in a song 😂 Great video still
Please please please please can you do a Sylosis unboxing? I'd love to be able to break down all the individual elements one by one. Brilliant video, thanks
Dystopia95 I have sylosis to thank for my love of guitar, they took me to a level where there was no going back. I’d accept Jesus as my lord and savior if it got sylosis to start writing again
By the way, what the narrator calls the vocoder track is just a synth (a vocoder actually needs both a modulator - the voice - and a carrier - the synth sound)
I absolutely love doubling the guitars with synths, but how do you balance that with the other parts of the song where they aren't doubled? Should I automate the guitars down when the synths come in? P.S. holy fuck, those pitched screams....
Hate to sound nit-picky, but they're not doing harmonic rakes in this song. They're just playing straight harmonics on the higher strings. But the bass doing a rake during it does definitely help the mix tremendously.
Eriml RGG There's no whammy involved in this track. Also, i dont think they play harmonics, but just open high strings, they use that a lot in their songs. Ola Englund is the only one I've seen who plays that way with the harmonics.
@@ИльяЗубков-ф8ж you are right, somehow during all these years I've listened a D but it's muted... Maybe harmonics? Or mayne my ears are just fucked up right LoL
to be more precise the guitars are recorded with mics in front of the amp cabinet. You can use a DI before or after distorsion, depends on the setup, but it's mostly used with the bass (where the DI is more precise to be mixed with the dirty and mushy tone) and rarely with a guitar.
Simon Skipper was wondering that too and when I saw a video of the studio tracking, he was playing with two bass drums. It’s two separate mics for each kick
If you see his setup, both live and in the studio, he's got the hi-hat really far from the snare. Both vertically and horizontally. Like in this picture. media.gettyimages.com/photos/the-drum-kit-setup-of-mario-duplantier-drummer-of-french-progressive-picture-id184758945?s=612x612 I guess it's that.
I recorded drums using a beta57a on snare, a pop filter with foam wrapped around it in between the snare mic and hihat, and got very little bleed. I'm not positive what he did for this session, but that's worked for me in the past.
Awesome stuff getting a hold of this. I'm starting to record guitar myself and looking at this vid I was wondering if Gojira has 2 left and 2 right rhythm (would they be at about 100% and 25%?) and what looks like 2 lead tracks (Both 100% on either side?) cheers.
Check out our videos about mixing machine head guitars, Joel goes into detail there about panning and stuff. basically you can do it either way: pan everything 100% left/right, or something like 100%/75%... try both and see what you like!
it triggered me so much that you barley played solo vocals. i can listen to the song if i wanna hear everything together, people trying to learn about this stuff would really like to hear each vocal track and what they are doing.
@@Djentstructer How is Tomas more creative lmao. Most of the songs the drum parts are written by the guitarists. Most songs has no dynamics with the drums, he just follows the rest of the band with his pedals and hits his crash. BUT, that's totally OK, that's his role in Meshuggah.Mario is an inventor and a writer. Meshuggah would exist without Haake, Gojira wouldn't without Mario.
Who's mixed this song already??
URM Academy me!

I'm envious of someone being able to play click levels of tight without actually playing to one. Mario is just insane..
Yeah that’s mind blowing that he is that accurate. I never knew that, amazing.
Glad I checked the comments !
this album's production is still one of my favorites. the first heavy part of The Art of Dying is insanely crushing.
ToxicxEternity And the ending too...

16:34 cant unhear this now. Soo awesome never noticed that.

"Pain is killing me bro.." !
damn that was funny
This is one of the coolest things I have ever seen. Love Gojira. Thanks for this!
I love everything about Gojira, and hearing isolated tracks makes me love then even more. Thanks for this video!

Damn these guys write a sick song. Joe lays down vocals so smart with the double
I've listened to that album a few too many times, it's kinda weird to hear the tracks on their own...
Gojira is so damn raw and amazing.
Need more Gojira!
yeah, we need more
holy shit,
these vocals are so massive...
These guys do a great show

brother knows!

Oh yeah please
A lot more gain/distortion on the guitars than I thought. They sound way more "raw" on their own.
The plastic bag in the sea part contained a really low growl, I'm not sure if you noticed
By the way, what the narrator calls the vocoder track is just a synth (a vocoder actually needs both a modulator - the voice - and a carrier - the synth sound)
How do you know the sound wasn't created with a vocoder?
@@nenntmichbond there was no characteristics of a voice in the sound
so interesting! thank you for this insight
alright, audio newbie here, never used pro tools, so i gotta ask: why does it say "poop" next to noinput and what the hell does that stand for lol
12:16 lmfao that kinda scared me
I remember this month. It was so rad.
Also I can't help but notice......poop.
Why are there "poop" buttons? I've never used pro tools
thats if you want it to sound like shit
gage gregory lmao used on st anger
Tightest band I’ve ever seen live
Please do sylosis?! Their music is beautifully layered

Wow! I love how the raw tracks sound. I really don't like how mixes are so processed nowadays
Same here. I REFUSE to ever use drum samples. Even if I use an amp simulator, I'll still run it through real speakers, mics, and preamps.
Hate to sound nit-picky, but they're not doing harmonic rakes in this song. They're just playing straight harmonics on the higher strings. But the bass doing a rake during it does definitely help the mix tremendously.

I wonder what's the difference between this : 2 guitars double tracked and 1 guitar quad tracked ? thanks
should prolly look at the end of that song a lil longer but thats fire
Oh my dear goodness!!!
They sound super tight to me! I’m sure Sam Pura would say otherwise ha!
I'll have to give this song a listen. Wasn't a fan of the intro even though it's well written but I like the other riffs throughout the song

Fun. Vive Gojira
You had to insert a plugin to flip the phase of the track?
Thanks for the video. Can we do Devin Townsend next?
thats next level shit lol
If I sign up for nail the mix, do I have to have protools to be able to get the tracks? Because I have personus studio one and would love to buy this
even the guitars by themselves sound heavy as fuck
How did he get the tracks
Where can I get these tracks

how do you get that kind of reverse pinch harmonic sound right before the verse riff kick in
Bend the string before you pick the note and them slowly bend it back down.

SWR bass amp
