As mentioned, the ability to REPEATEDLY, SAFELY dive to these deepest of places for HOURS on bottom offers unprecedented opportunities for scientific discovery, furthering our understanding of previously unknown realms of our own planet. He has led the way to the true final frontier here on Earth. James Cameron did it earlier, but not to the extent Victor did, as Victor's entire project was designed to be repeated, practically at will with the pertinent team members, who are all responsible and without whose efforts the project would never have been completed. Victor has a lot of knowledge and what really helps him is understanding what he is doing and testing it beyond what it is intended to do. He doesn't work outside that box.
The outstanding professionalism, from the submarine building, to the crew, and the video production, everyone, is truly breathtaking. And Victor looks like one of those legendary explorers from the past that everybody thought went extinct.
When you look at this set up, vs the Titian and Ocean Gate's set up... it really has the look of this is what professional certified people do, vs dude in his back yard doing a DIY project.
Seeing this and how deep they go with out issues makes that whole ocean gate situation sad, that whole industry warned that guy that something bad would happen eventually
The pressure vessel on this sub was made from two forged hemispheres of titanium. It went to russia for testing and withstood 20% more pressure than than what the vessel will experience at the challenger deep. Ocean gate’s vessel was very experimental compared to triton’s sub.
I'm going to be honest with you guys, not only this series are great and the accomplishments of the team are remarcable... But the moment when they talk with the guys at the ISS, was AMAZING. I got goosebumps!
All of you are heroes of my family! My 6-year-old daughter has watched "5 deeps" videos many times. She know every heroe of the expedition, names of all equipment and even all species of sea animals,that were catched on the sea bottom . At first I thought this was a bit heavy on the focus on Victor. But after watching the entire video, with all the visitors, the dedication of the team and Victor telling us more about his vision I am thoroughly impressed! We dearly need more entrepreneurs and philanthropists like Victor!
Love that this video mentions how the backup safety procedure of resurfacing on the LF automatically kicked in and dropped weights, as soon as battery drainage was detected. That way, in case the operator forgot to check how the batteries were, he or she would never make the mistake of being underwater while the batts. begin dying out. They thought out all scenarios for this vehicle, and rightfully so. (So imagine the hubris of not listening to experienced engineers, managers and operators telling you to adopt the same overplanning practice, simply because you hate being schooled. Imagine how out of touch with reality of Death you'd have to be to think you could maybe go on living with that attitude.)
Ironically the Titan tragedy has boosted interest in deep ocean exploration. Hopefully no one will be this reckless again or be allowed to be. Can Cameron please release The Abyss 4K already?

This is how you build a certified DSV. I know it was very expensive but that expense is necessary if you want to dive to these depths AND come back again. It is so far ahead of Stockton Rush's OceanGate, that botch up is not even in sight.

It’s a 2 piece solid titanium hull. It can withstand hundreds of cycles if not thousands. No one really knows the number because it’s never been reached before but titanium is the best material we know of to use
Regarding the life capsule that depends how close to the elastic limit the titanium is stressed, which in turn depends on the thickness. My guess is it has been designed to be nowhere near the elastic limit and well within the linear range for the material, in which case it should be 10's to 100's of thousands of cycles! i.e. Everything else will likely fail before the capsule. In the case of carbon fibre composite like used in ocean gate I would not know the fatigue cycles limit but it is very easy to introduce tiny imperfections during fabrication that vastly reduce its strength &/or fatigue resistance also CF shatters or breaks instantaneously at its limit (even though its very strong up to that point). I suspect ocean gate titan was already operating very close to its limit at 4000m deep, it probably should never have been allowed to dive less that 1000m. Whereas this DSV capsule could probably safely go to at least 20,000m without imploding looking at how well it has been engineered and the safety margins in its design.
@@robertcarter560 well said man. I think even a couple inch thick titanium hull can withstand the pressure at the titanic no problem. Everything is built with a margin of safety so if they plan on using it at 13,000 it will be built to safely go to 20,000 for an extended period of time. They use a formula and they don’t take chances
@ 9:24 sub is at bottom 10km below surface, there are small fish swimming about!! 😮😮😮 their bodies have adapted and can withstand the tremendous pressure of 1000 bars!!😮😮😮 how is that even possible!😮😮😮
It’s pretty simple really. Their bodies are at equal pressure. They have evolved to be almost like water itself. You won’t find any large mammals at that depth though because they haven’t evolved to be able to handle that pressure

Not really. The US Navy has indicated, more or less, that they would greatly prefer for me not to go there. Concerns over nuclear material in the wreck, I suspect.

The research and safety precautions. These guys take with this submersible is exactly how the Titan crew should have been operating. Also this submersible was going even deeper then the Titanic. Stockton Rush Should have watched this documentary and took notes.
I still don't understand why there isn't a tether for extra safety. Only reason I could find so far is the risk of entanglement in a ship wreck, but what about all other non-wreck dives, just going up and down?
Tether would just be too long. Seven miles long . . . too heavy and a risk of entanglement, not to mention the physical difficulty of reeling it back in. Seven miles is a very, very long cable.

for example alvin the us deep sea vessel has allready done 5000+ dives it should last "forever" when build in this form and not go deeper than rated

@@robertcarter560 well said man. I think even a couple inch thick titanium hull can withstand the pressure at the titanic no problem. Everything is built with a margin of safety so if they plan on using it at 13,000 it will be built to safely go to 20,000 for an extended period of time. They use a formula and they don’t take chances

It’s pretty simple really. Their bodies are at equal pressure. They have evolved to be almost like water itself. You won’t find any large mammals at that depth though because they haven’t evolved to be able to handle that pressure

Rarely you’ll find deep sea animals at the surface and they look like jelly because there is not enough pressure to maintain their form

Not really. The US Navy has indicated, more or less, that they would greatly prefer for me not to go there. Concerns over nuclear material in the wreck, I suspect.

The research and safety precautions. These guys take with this submersible is exactly how the Titan crew should have been operating. Also this submersible was going even deeper then the Titanic. Stockton Rush Should have watched this documentary and took notes.

I still don't understand why there isn't a tether for extra safety. Only reason I could find so far is the risk of entanglement in a ship wreck, but what about all other non-wreck dives, just going up and down?
Tether would just be too long. Seven miles long . . . too heavy and a risk of entanglement, not to mention the physical difficulty of reeling it back in. Seven miles is a very, very long cable.
