I remember my first JT album - Aqualung. I'm not quite as old as you but been following Tull since Aqualung, first backwards Benefit, Stand Up and This Was and then forwards to today. I'd have to say Aqualung with unique in time and space. Without Aqualung I don't think Tull would have been Tull. And it is so odd that Jennie Franks his first wife contributed to Tull's success, and Burton Silverman the man who painted the covers of the album, also without which the album would not have been the album. But it also seems like Aqualung might have been his most personal and out there album, but after that he crawled back into himself and fantasy instead of elaborating on those ideas. Ian seems to have turned into a Conservative now that he has been accepted. Forget all that stuff he sung about in Aqualung.

In what sense did you mean that Ian thinks progressive? That words seems to mean a lot of different things and then multiply that by two at least when you go across the ocean.
If you make the connection between A and RTB, I am sure it is there. To me the difference between them that didn't really connection to two to me was Western - Aqualung, and then Eastern - Roots To Branches, not to mention completely different worlds in terms of generation age and culture.

    Sleep: the time's not yet
    Early birds soon crowing
    Wake when dawn declares
    Woman risen from childish airs
    I watch, across the room
    Dancing shadow, torch outside
    Lights path down cobbled lane
Which I have walked, will walk again
    Sweet field lily, sweet Shoshana
    Names to conjure fragrant danger
    Fingers tremble, trace the line
From nape to sacrum down the spine
    Poisoned prize a trophy
    Freely taken, hardly won
    A minute, holds back hours
    Bud emboldened, forest flowers
    Moist under my hand
    She sleeps; breath comes quickly
    A sigh parts silky lips
    Soft-swell breasts, proud golden tips
    Sweet field lily, sweet Shoshana
    Names to conjure fragrant danger
My fingers tremble, trace the line
From nape to sacrum down the spine
    Sweet sadness fills my heart
    Offered chances best not taken
    Unsullied, no vain glory:
    Chapter, verse, another story
    Brushed eyelids gently closed
    Beauty framed in dawn-light
    Savoured moment blessed
A kiss, farewell, and leave to rest

Well gosh darn it, I love it. Maybe because the expectations were very low :) Ian finally embraces his old voice, he sounds like an old and frail guy but, weirdly, it suits the song very well instead of sounding like a desperate effort to keep up. Even the subject matter, the story of Susannah and the elders from the Bible, seen from the perspective of one of the elders, is well chosen and sends an authentic, emotional message on the inner turmoil of old age, something we don't often see in rock music. There's a simple, powerful, yet disquieting riff, harkening back to TAAB era but without being dated, just a suggestion to it. The band makes an effort to sound tight and united.

Well that just made my day! I’ve been a fan for over 50 years and wasn’t expecting to hear a new song from one of my favorite bands today! And better yet it’s from a new album. That means I have even more new songs to look forward to. That song sounded great! Bravo!

Tull has had a couple of albums released in your lifetime - Roots to Branches and Dot Com, both of which are tremendous. They also had the Christmas Album (not sure if that counts) for what it’s worth, as well as several solo varieties from Ian and Martin.

Way back in 70s , I came across Jethro Tull. It was a pretty unique name even as the rock bands had exotic names those days. ( Velvet Underground, Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, Fairport Convention to name a few) . The album was Stand Up and it was astonishing and most of the subsequent albums exceeded expectations till Heavy Horses - Storm watch era . Then the fall from peak , brief revival and even now this band continues to be relevant

I've been hooked on Tull tunes since Benefit was released in my sophomore year of high school (1970). While the music has evolved over time, the legendary attributes of the "handcrafted" blend of flute, electric guitar and drums (along with clever lyrics) have remained its trademark. Bravo!

Until this album came out just a few days ago, I knew only Aqualung. What an amazing album this is. It's like a fresh breath of air from the better past. No one can do progressive rock like this anymore. I have to immerse myself deeper into Jethro Tull now. Better late than never, I keep telling to myself, yet I wish I had realized to look closer much earlier.

When I first heard A Passion Play I was blown away but I was left a little puzzled as to what I had just listened to. It took a number of listens to start to “get it”. It wasn’t your typical “pop” song and needed some effort and serious listening to get something out of it. Ian has said he thinks the listener should have to work a bit when listening to his music. I love A Passion Play and it’s always in my top 3 when asked what my favorite Tull albums are. This song is like that for me. I liked the overall sound on the first couple of listens. There’s a lot going on there that’s coming out after a few more listens. It may or may not grow on you. It is growing on me. To each his own of course.

      > There’s a lot going on there that’s coming out after a few more listens.
I've found that to be true of the best Tull albums. Though Homo Erraticus felt "thin" to me, that is, not that much in it. I think they, he, may no longer have the patience or energy to devote so much effort to music any more. Anyway, looking forward to it.

I agree. I hear a lot of a passion play in this, 50 years later. Truth is though I wish Ian would go ahead and endulge himself in a 3 minute solo, maybe not that so much, just say f it, imma pretend it's 1973 and go for it. I dunno man, I'm 49 in don't feel like doing what I did when I was 19.. or do I?
