WOW! What a voice!! I performed this in French in recital, but in English in an Opera performance. At 4:10 in the actual opera, there is a break where Carmen's 2 girlfriends each sing "L'amour", with Escamillio repeating it after each and finally Carmen's sultry L'amour" and again Escamillo's "L'amour" . . . then the final refrain of "Toreador, l'amour t'attend". Evidently, Warren thought that since there were no women, they were going right to the final refrain, but the pro that he was caught it quickly that the conductor went to another reprise . . . miscommunications happens. But once again what a voice he had!!!!
Absolutely yes. What a treat to hear both of them, stands tall among so many versions. Warren even threw in a bit extra variation at the end, audience got his love letter...only wish to be there
Best, most sexy voice highly addictive, well well done, wonder how many hours he put in to pull out like this.. Master, real master, no cheap shots here at all, Golden Killer.
@@voltape:: Good observations ! I was wondering why I didn't hear the chorus in the "repeat" -- only the music -- but I did see Warren's facial expression.

Is interesting know the date of this execution. Mr Warren does not seems so young. The age is important also for the singer performances. In any case he made a very good execution. Massive and dark voice, good vocalist even in the high register. Bravo. Escamillo is a role destined for baritone, but often the role his executed also from a basso lirico or a basso cantabile. Vittorio Maurino Tosi.
Catch him at about 4:12. Woops! Any singer can have an embarrassing moment like this. Too bad this one was televised. Anyway, Warren seems to be having fun nevertheless & delivers his predictably solid performance. The piece & the role lay a bit low for him & once he was really established at the MET he wisely relinquished the entire part but still often programmed the Toreador Song as here.
Finally...a toast that isn't painstakingly slow! Escamillio is such an exciting character and the wrong tempo in this aria just kills all of the characters electricity! It should be quick and exciting! Like an actual bullfight!
I've read the comments, but hasn't anyone noticed the mistake Warren made during this performance? I don't criticize him for it. He will always be my favorite opera singer.
I'm in the minority but I just don't like the quality of his voice. I never have. He did something unusual with his vowels and it doesn't work for me. I don't hate him, not at all. But I prefer baritones like Merrill, Macneil or Tibbett, among Americans.
Great Leonar Warren. His french diction is very good. He died on stage at the Met in 1960 during La forza del destino.
Warren, es el mejor toreador sin duda.

Great insight into what happened there.
He was the best. Like Björling as tenor.
Killer performance from one of the great American baritones of all time. No, one of the greatest baritones in general of all time.
+Gordon Chow 2nd only to Ettore Bastianini. That dude was a freakin' beast.
I like Bastianini, he did good singing with Del Monaco on some records I have. Both are beasts!
Second to no one. Bastianini was wonderful. Warren owns this piece though. Impeccable support, legato, and acting.
@@SushiBrightblade Ettore more shining mental, here is much more deep mature intelligent and attractive BEAST. Love deep both voices,

What a voice!
I love the fact that the conductor's baton appears to be over a foot and a half long.
One of the greatest singers of all time!!!! He makes it look so easy while never pushing the voice!!!!! Bravo!!!!!
Love everything about his performance! Facial expression is authentic to the sentiments being expressed. Phrasing, voice control, mezzoforte.
Perfect!
Better than the studio recording Warren also recorded.
Here, his phrasing, musicianship, and choice of finale show him at his best.

Warren was clearly taken by surprise at 3:55 when he was ready for the final cadence and the orchestra came in with another repeat of the chorus.
no it is a 4:10, after the amour t'atend

semplicemente magnifico !

From what I read about his personality" some one got yelled at after this. The evil look the clinched fist and the quick camera cut away!

¡¡¡Gran Cantante, como, Gran Voz. Exelente Artista!!! Era de los de Raza.
I can hear him even in the Loud Moscow's underground..
4:04 lol I think he wanted to skip to the end there haha
The highest note is a g sharp????? incredible, it sounded so easy for him
I´m sure it was easy for him to sing a g Sharp ;)
Obviously it was, but it's not self-evident that a baritono would be able to do that :p that bravour note is not even in the original sheet music.
well a baritone sings a g sharp in the Pagliacci prolog - "Al pari de VOI"
and a g at the end - andiam incominaCIAte.
A baritone can sing a g Sharp, no problem
Apparently he could hit a high C !

True baritone, almost bass-baritone
I'm in the minority but I just don't like the quality of his voice. I never have. He did something unusual with his vowels and it doesn't work for me. I don't hate him, not at all. But I prefer baritones like Merrill, Macneil or Tibbett, among Americans.
He's doing it surprisingly well (for his velvet not very heroic/dramatic voice...)
? i guess you don't know him well. his voice, while capable of velvety colors, was always equally capable of heroic and dramatic qualities
Great voice, great artist, but horrible accent
not compared to the vast majority of non-french singers, until the 1990s. it's actually quite good compared to his contemporaries, sadly
