    Even over here in Sri Lanka, old steam locomotives are repaired and brought back into service to haul a few old fashioned carriages as a tourist attraction. However, just like in your case, there is a diesel engine attached (at the end of the train) as well. There is also a a carriage in which technicians / repair crews travel , in case to attend to any repairs on the way.

    Great Video. Such a treat to have a cameraman who:
    1. is content to take a fixed shot and let the train stream towards you as it would appear in real life rather than the current vogue to freeze the loco and let the landscape move.
    2. Uses a medium zoom so the train appears to be running at a realistic speed rather than the ludicrous effect of a loco thrashing like mad to do a snails pace.
    3. Actually uses a tripod.
    Pity the tracking shot was on the shadow side of the loco but there was nothing you could do about that.

    I've noticed that #4014 seems to consistently burn cleaner than #3985 ever did, and both were converted to run oil. I know the Big Boy has a larger fire grate than the Challenger, but did they improve the injectors for the bunker fuel in this latest project to burn more efficiently? Or are they deliberately firing #4014 more leanly for a deliberately lighter exhaust? Perhaps they were constantly dumping extra fuel into #3985 to get the massive coal--black stack clouds for the photo ops that everyone wanted back then?

    • @ColoradoRailroadProductions
      @ColoradoRailroadProductions  4 года назад +2

      LouisXXVdeFrance yeah part of the reason it burns cleaner is because they learned from the challenger and improved it but the other half of it is that the boiler had so much scale in the boiler that they had to give challenger a bigger fire to keep boiler pressure.

      The two extra tenders are since none of the water tanks that used to be on this route are there anymore this means that they

      When this thing was designed in WWII, it was designed to haul at least 150-200 FULLY LOADED coal cars up Donner pass up a 2% grade no less all by itself at a speed of no less than 35MPH! On a flat terrain it's rated as much as 80MPH I heard although Ed Dicken, the curator and head of UP's Steam program said the best it can do right now is up to 60MPH....But being a little anal (Ummm.....Can you really blame him?!?!?!? 4014 is like....ummm.....I don't know....Only one of its kind here!) the max he'll run it is 55MPH.......Even if its barely at quarter power and barely breaking a sweat!

    • @johnburger1681

      @@StryderK There is so much dis-information about these engines. Big Boys were not designed to haul anything over Donner Pass. The 25 Big Boy locomotives were built to haul freight over the Wasatch mountains between Ogden, Utah, and Green River, Wyoming. In the late 1940s, they were reassigned to Cheyenne, Wyoming, where they hauled freight over Sherman Hill to Laramie, Wyoming. That is the only place they were used. Over a ruling grade of 1.14% the 4-8-8-4s could move 4,000 tons (3,636 tonnes) of freight at 20-25 mph (32-40.25 km/h). When the ruling grade between Ogden, Utah and Green River, Wyoming (176 miles/283 km) was reduced to 0.82%, the tonnage rating climbed to 5,360 tons (4,873 tonnes). At 45 mph (72.5 km/h), these engines developed 6,000 drawbar horsepower (4,476 kW). Among their many abilities was the flexibility to move around curves of 20 deg.
