Thanks again for the fantastic Big Boy video, you captured the moment beautifully. As a HO scale UP modeller in Australia I really appreciated the footage taken in the small sidings as many of the structures matched the vintage of this impressive locomotive. Definitely on my bucket list to see it first hand!
I love how you captured the contrails in the sky like they were left behind from when Big Boy was being watched over by our Country's Air Force flying over them back in May in Ogden at their celebration unveiling at Golden Spike, as they were now in juxtaposition with the tall Grain Elevators, flying high over Western Nebraska into Southeastern Wyoming into Cheyenne! That was a very cool capture I must say! Looks like Ed Dickens was firing Big Boy when it made it's stop for a drink, regreasing and a rinse! Gotta break in His Steamcrew right! Woo-Woo! Great video Tom! Thanks for making this tour possible Union Pacific! Glad I was able to be there in Ogden and in West Chicago, as well! Long May You Run!
Any idea whether or not 3985 is coming back? I keep hearing rumors about it being permanently sidelined and being used as a parts source for 4014. Someone also told me that the vintage diesels were being stored indefinitely as well.
The 3985 already had several years of work done to it when it went down in 2010. When they ordered parts for the Big Boy they also ordered parts for the #3985 as many of the parts are the same. It was later determined that the #3985 needed a extensive rebuild from the frame up much like the Big Boy. For now there is no current plans to restore the #3985, but the parts are there and if they have the time and money it may run again. I would say it is more likely it will run again but it will probably be one of the projects where they work on it when they have nothing else to do. I wouldn't expect any real progress for several years.
Damn, that’s a real shame! I really hope they do find the time to repair 3985 in the future. I’m not willing to see this locomotive neglected for the rest of its life.
Has 4014 pulled a revenue consist yet? I wamt to it under a modern freight load, not basically on idle freewheeling about. Besides, as the guys that drove the Challenger 3985 said, the locomotive runs more efficiently and less wear on the engine when it's pulling loads it was designed for..... not piddling around at idle. 4014 might as well not be under its own power and pushed around if it never pulls a freight load again! 3985 pulled 140+ shipping container cars right after being launched--- what's 4014 done? Let The Beast FEED!!
@@travelingtom923 I found that after leaving that comment. However, if 4014 doesn't pull more container cars than 3985 did, can we really say it's more powerful than 3985? I don't think so! I'll say this again: If they didn't want to fully demonstrate the massive power of the Big Boy locomotives and let it pull freight more massive than a measly Challenger 3985 did, then they should have NEVER restored 4014. Just let a diesel-electric push around and explain to everyone why you didn't restore it: because "We're too scared to let it pull the loads it was designed for because we're afraid of might break!" **Until 4014 can pull more massive freight than 3985, IT'S MERELY A SHELL OF A BIG BOY!** --and nothing to see nor celebrate. What a disappointment!
@@the1darknight Do you realize how hard and expensive it is to operate and maintain a steam locomotive? Us guys up at the IRM work our backs off to keep the Frisco 1630 and Shay 5 operational. And we make sure everything, and I mean everything, is in complete, working order before we operate our steam locomotive for the day.
@@MackeyBigBoy4014 you missed my point COMPLETELY. There's no point to restoring it if you're not going to restore it to its former full functionality or better! Having a SHELL of a 4014 pulling lollipops is a waste if it can't really pull what it used to! There's no point to put a Model-T engine in a Shelby GT 500 Mustang and expect it to perform the same! @@the1darknight I heard what you are saying. We are all eager to see the black smoke belching, ground shaking, Big Boy hauling a mile long train. I am sure at some point they will do that. Big Boy was the 👑 of Rails.
Awesome Big Boy video 🚂🚋🚋🚋🚋
Thank you.
1) Filmed on my mother's birthday
2) Filmed what is personally, my all-time *FAVORITE* steam locomotive in the universe
I love coal and wood fired steam locomotives that can be pulling one hundred fifty, one hundred sixty, two hundred car monster trains!
Excellent vid.
So impressive
Very cool video.
Why wheel are gold

Use iron right
Any clue what they did with the rest of the coaches? They had them when they left Omaha.
LocoLuke probably added to a separate consist or run with 3985
@@tonyschulz3558 Probably left them in North Platte. I know they don't keep them in Cheyenne.
They most likely were left behind in Council Bluffs at Heritage Park Roundhouse would be my guess!
When are they coming thru north dakota
No plans for North Dakota. Will be heading to California next.

Steam.
@@travelingtom923 Why dont we see steam when it blows?
@@ferencvido9970 It depends on how hot the steam is. In this case the steam is so hot it is invisible. True steam is invisible.

West of North Platte.
