I went to a little country town called Friendship Indiana one night and this guy took the stage and started singing and playing electric blues guitar and it was mind blowing . Some little bluegrass band played right before and were good , but then Lonnie Mack came on and turned up loud and blew everyone away with his playing and his voice. My Dad told me " watch this guy , he is as good as any guitar player you will hear" . And Dad wasn't wrong

When I was about 12 or 13 years old my brother took me to a concert because he was a guitar player and he knew I was learning to play. The concert was Roy Buchanan Dickey Betts and Lonnie Mack. It pretty well blew my mind and made me a fan for life and a more dedicated guitar player

Got to open for Lonnie in early 80's. Remember being disappointed that he was playing thru a Roland Jazz Chorus instead of a Magnatone. As soon as he started playing I forgot all about the missing Maggie! Had Tim Drummond on bass and maybe Stan Szelest on keys (?). All real nice cats driving themself on tour in an RV! Also it appears to me that in this video Lonnie is tuned down to D. Interesting...maybe so the keys weren't so much of a strain on his vocals. Not only a killer guitarist but a great vocalist! I'm fortunate to have acquired a live tape of Lonnie in 1962 with James Thomas on sax and vocals! One of the nicest stars I've met in my 4+ decades in the music "business"!

The piano player is my uncle Dumpy Rice this video footage has brought me to tears. 4 minutes of Dumpy playing is more than I could ask for. Getting to hear him play a couple of the instrumentals that he wrote was so cool. We lost him suddenly on September 10, 2003. I remember being the one who called Lonnie to tell him about Dumpy's passing and he didn't take it very well at all. They were friends since their teens and played together for so many years. Thank you so much for posting this. Is there anyway I could obtain an actual DVD for our family. Lonnie was like family to us as well and i must say that your footage is excellent considering the crowd. The fight at the end was the perfect ending to this video. It reminds me of all the gigs in roadhouses and clubs that they played in and how they must have seen hundreds of brawls in the crowd. Thank you again so much for posting this.

I'm so happy for you - I remember talking to him - real pro n gentleman.
You made my day - It was really very difficult shooting the show with the tight crowd n noise, trying to get the sound right. I am glad you understand
what it's like to this right.
I sent him a tape of the show. Maybe you can get a copy from his family.
I'm a senior 78 yo n it's so hard for me to sit at the computer n do this
esp. with a bad back. Plus it's all packed away n hate to fool with the tape n
screw it up. I'm sure you got lots of good footage over the years.
The next time he came around, for some reason he would not let me film.
Really appreciate your comment - Thanks

Lonnie was (and still is) one of my all-time guitar heroes. I never thought I'd get to see him play live, but many years ago, he came to play at the Colne Blues Festival (Lancashire). Years later, I was searching through a rack of LPs during a sale in an HMV store in Leeds and came away with several of his recordings. They're all still with me, as are memories of seeing him play.
It's interesting that Jeff Beck cited Lonnie as a major influence. During his life, he played several of Lonnie's tunes - either solo or with others such as SRV.

I first saw Lonnie circa 1990 at the 2nd annual Bayfront Bluesfest in Duluth. Wasn't too familiar,I knew his rep as a good guitar man but had him pegged as more country. We wondered why he was the fest headliner weekend capper with Buddy Guy playing in front of him instead of the other way around with Buddy's rep for guitar flash and excellence. I had never seen Buddy live in person either at that time so of course he really blew us away with his set and he was instantly my new guitar hero. Well he had the crown for about an hour. First and only time in my life I crowned a new personal guitar hero king and dethroned him in the same night. We were back in the parking lot having a beer between sets when Lonnie started up his set with "Riding the Blinds". The famous flying V#007 sound hit me like a lightning bolt and I dropped my beer and was magnetically jerked almost at dead run back into the stage area where I witnessed a life changing set from a guitar sound that I couldn't liken to anything except Albert King (who I had seen many times) just because of the sheer unmatchable power of it. After a couple hours Lonnie dedicated the closer to Roy Buchanan, whose death was still very fresh in our minds, and exploded the fireworks on "Cincinnati Jail". My mind was blown and it was very obvious why Lonnie was the closer. Nobody could have mounted a meaningful show after the depth and breadth of the material and the skill we had just witnessed!

he was pure magic, each and every night. I was walking with Warren Haynes one night from the car to the hotel, out on Long Island somewhere. Some guy in his 30's approaches, raving that nobody can do it like u can, i laughed, asked the guy if he had ever heard of Lonnie Mack. Warren had a great laugh. Dickey loved Lonnie's work. The greats always know the unknown greats. Once Lonnie respected u, it was forever. I missed seeing him the last 5-10 yrs of his touring days, then read he had retired and knew I'd never see him again, was saddened. His last several albums were pure magic. He deserved much bigger gigs, much bigger crowds, more money, but he never complained, was just glad he had full houses to play for, and made them all remember him forever, the true mark of a top pro. Easily one of the top 5 best ever, along with with Roy Buchanen! One night at the Lone Star on 52 st, a few names wanted to get onstage with him. The guy from the Cars hit it, and got lost on 12 bar blues, perhaps under a chemical or booze haze, and Lonnie's other gtr player picked up a red cloth napkin, waved it at the imaginary heat that was not coming from this guys's gtr, and I almost fell off the stage laughing. Not one word was said, but the message was clear. We let u up here but u better be able to burn or we will burn u up, lol. Just because u may have gotten radio airplay decades ago does not qualify u to play with a blues legend, not by any means, lol. Reality rules.

love this! been playing this over and over for days lol sometimes watching the video and sometimes just enjoying the audio. that is one amazing video you have there! the whole thing from start to finish WOW what a trip! LEGENDARY performers Lonnie and Dumpy!! lightning bolt in the sky... the shaking and the lights to the outrageous audience members. i felt sympathy for the camera person getting the beer bottles in front of the camera, that seemed rude. also sympathy for the musicians for not having a more well behaved audience, but maybe that's the way he wanted it...? and then that little brawl there at the end... what?!?! the musicians being the pros they are do not miss a single beat and keep playing hahaha that is the best* thing besides the beginning of that song right after 10 min mark when there's a moment of quiet before he rips into that otherworldly guitar riff from another dimension that's funky feeling with a swampy texas/louisiana vibe and tears the roof off. with the sermon part to start that off: "most the time i wake up in the afternoon" (how does he know me so well? haha hell yeah!) whole thing is dynamite! THANK YOU so very very much for sharing this with us!! very good quallity video and audio both ty

Thank for this rare video, bring back some fond memories
I met Lonnie in Ashland Wisconsin in the early "60's and had and earful about his guitar style during one of his breaks. A couple years later had a chance to talk to him again while stationed in Alaska, learned he was born in August 1941, one month before me.
Got all of his music that he recorded during his life and it still fascinates me. His Flying V was the 7th one made during the 50's and had it customized to sound like no other V manufactured since. I picked up a rare '94 re-issue from one of his former band members "Dennis Chandler" who also worked for Gibson. He also played in Lonnie's band on occasion.
    He surely will be missed

Huge guitar influence in my life!! On my 21st birthday my parents took me to the Slippery Noodle in Indianapolis to see Lonnie. Just before the show I go to the men’s room and as I’m standing at the urinal a scruffy redneck comes in and uses the urinal next to me. I glance out the side of eye and realize it’s Lonnie. Just about wizzed all over the floor. Lol! Made it back to my see and Lonnie just walks up on stage and proceeds to blow my mind. I learned more that night than I could ever tell. Fast forward 10yrs and I end up playing in a band that shared the bill with Lonnie and friends at a blues festival. Was like going back to school…man was blessed with some serious soul! Don’t believe he ever received the true credit he deserved but I’m also not too sure he would’ve had it any other way. RIP Lonnie and God bless his family!
