My favorite Soundgarden song, lyrically speaking. “when the forest burns along the road, like God’s eyes in my headlights!” How fucking sick are those lyrics? and Chris’ voice along with Kim’s guitar playing and everything else just takes over your mind and body, I swear. I feel like I could lift up the Earth when listening to this song.
I just love his voice. There is something down to Earth about his voice. I remember listening to Soundgarden as a teenager. Now I am picking up on his music again.❤
"Rusty Cage" was covered by Johnny Cash on the 1996 album, Unchained, which won a Grammy Award for Best Country Album, and Cash's version earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. During at least three live performances by Soundgarden (July 21, 1996, in Knoxville, Tennessee, at Forks In The River, early November 1996 at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Illinois, and at Soundgarden's last pre-breakup show at the Blaisdell Arena, Honolulu, Hawaii, on February 9, 1997), Cornell introduced the song with a dedication to Cash. On Cornell's acoustic tour in late 2015, he started including "Rusty Cage" in the set-list, employing Cash's country-rock arrangement of the song.
"Too cold to a fire I'm burning diesel, I'm burning dinosaur bones." Ever since I first heard those lyrics back in 1993 I knew I was a Soundgarden fan for life.
Oh I think MANY MANY fans have met a sticky high-speed end to this fabulous work of art!! 😂 R.I.P. any that have !! And give Chris our best up there! (6 years to the month! Has he been gone that long already? Crazy!)

To me “Badmotorfinger” is the greatest hard rock album of the 90’s no question…..everything about this record is….is just fuckin awesome….the POWER that band was able to harness together was sick….I read an interview with Kim around the time this came out & he was asked about young ladies attending their shows & he said “I think we frighten most young women?” 🤤I always loved that 🖤👍
Maarzie, don't know exactly what you are correcting. Their statement about Cash covering the song is correct regardless if they included the exact date he did it.
Happy Travels Brother. Still get that same feeling in my soul hearing that voice from Above. Energy never dies. Say what up to Layne, Kurt, and Scott, and enjoy the Jam Session
Cornell's daughter singing bravely in his honor shortly after his death was heartbreaking. This is why I never could go through it, because deep down I know I'll be handing a lifetime of unimaginable mental anguish to my loved ones, hurting those closest to me the most.
Hate to be that guy that points out the soundtrack was on the Panasonic 3DO version and not the Genesis/Megadrive, but it doesn't help that they also named the 3DO version "Road Rash" like the original. So can't blame anyone for that confusion.
I'm a straight up Hip Hop head and I heard this song on a rock channel twice in the same day and it grabbed me like "take this punk!" I asked Google who is this! Now I'm here! Such a badass song!
This song is the best example of a perfect opening track of an album. Everything about this song gets the listener listening to this album for the first time's attention and perfectly sets the mood for what's about to come after this song. I always have to listen to Rusty Cage first before Outshined and the rest of the album. The two flow together so well.
Same here man, that Road Rash was awesome, it's how I came to like Soundgarden in the first place, and the Video was awesome that played when this song came on too, the motorbike guys doin all the tricks, so cool.

The riffs in this song are so convoluted at first but once you listen to the whole thing it manages to get simpler as it progresses. From the first riff to the last. It’s actually genius.
Simpler? The first riff is simple. The slow section is complicated AF. It's literally the most complicated song in its genre because it's 3x3/4, 5/8, back to 3/4 and playing slower with no rhythm to guide you in the beginning? It's ridiculous.
Shocked and saddened by the news of Chris Cornell passing. One of the all time greats! Badmotofinger came out my senior year and high school. Kick ass jams!!! Prays and peace to your family and friends in this devastating time. RIP
This, along with JCP and Slaves & Bulldozers are probably the most genius Soundgarden songs. I believe Cornell's greatest lyric-writing period was during Badmotorfinger.

I used to get mad when someone would comment that a more recent form of media led them to a classic song they never heard before. As if it's right to judge everyone by the same criteria despite how many factors such as age, culture and personal taste make that idea obsolete. Now I realize I was being a dick and anything that leads someone to a band like Soundgarden is a good one. It's not like I have any ownership over any of the things I'm discussing, people tend to think of they heard of something before you that they somehow own it

Killer music is always out there actually, but nothing one can hear on radio. Rush or Soundgarden wouldn't even have a chance at hitting airwaves in this era of rampant mental numbness.
The 90s... musically, we had it so good but really had no idea at the time that all that killer original and diverse music would soon be a thing of the past and record companies would instead opt to lay turd after Nickelback turd. I'll still be rockin' out to this shit IN my 90s.
Road rash growing up- first time I actually LISTENED to a distorted guitar and what was the beginning of being baptized as a touring musician- thank you road rash on Sega!!
Hahaha. All the motley crue and 80s rockers had absolutely no chance soon as these cats and the handful of others started circulating. ..complete anhiliism, with these riffs alone..
Don't discuss what you don't understand. I was there and the perfect age when grunge took over. We needed it, and we didn't even realize it until it happened. Hair metal had run it's course. It wasn't that it couldn't compete. Excess eventually takes its toll. Just like grunge's excesses took their tolls. It's like saying grunge died cause it didn't stand a chance against Creed or limp bizkit haha. Things have their time and then they go.
Rest in peace, Chris. You were a true legend and a major influence. This was one of the first songs I truly loved and I'm going to remember you by blasting this all night. You finally broke your rusty cage.
I just got through listening to... let me count.. TWENTY of my favourite soundgarden and Chris Cornell songs, came here to copy paste this track into another thread to REMIND people how fuckin GREAT this track was. Sometimes you forget how damned good they were and its been too long since i sat and listened to a Cornell Binge!! 😂 you gotta make yourself have a listen , go on do it now! Doesnt hurt so bad now as when he passed (and later on as it sank in) but i still get real feelings of loss when i listen to soundgarden tracks , dont know about you guys? Like we really lost someone who would have made more and more songs that i would love as we all grew old. Just dont get that with other artists whove passed . (Oh apart from Bowie!! Same sort of feelings of loss) Dont know how to describe the feeling , its noy like losing a loved one or friend its like a hole where awe would have been. Or , oh its too hard to explain , just get it every time i put soundgarden on or Chris's other bands I Wish we could have had more songs but sadly not to be, but we do have that fabulous back catalogue. Share music links all! 😂

The 90s... musically, we had it so good but really had no idea at the time that all that killer original and diverse music would soon be a thing of the past and record companies would instead opt to lay turd after Nickelback turd. I'll still be rockin' out to this shit IN my 90s.
Then how would you know how to get a youtube channel?
That's what SHE said... Too soon? www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-43635864
Sean H me too
Too awesome. I got this on 7” back in the day but appreciate it even more today…
There were still vinyl records being produced in 1992? I figured we moved onto cassettes and CDs by then.
Road rash growing up- first time I actually LISTENED to a distorted guitar and what was the beginning of being baptized as a touring musician- thank you road rash on Sega!!
R.I.P Chris Cornell. You will be missed :(
80's and 90's music rules
the voice of an angel
@@duaneshank6788 yah but in retrospect grunge produced better music than not the hair metal era and late 90s
R I P Chris 😢2 years gone 👊🏽👊🏽
Thank you for sharing your everlasting gift Chris. Rest easy now.
Am I the only one who came here only for Soundgarden?
Nope,
Yes, you are. All the other guys here, including me, don't know anything about music :D
+neunzehn84 I came here because my CD (yep I'm old fashioned) with this song broke :D
I'm here because I love all of Chris Cornell's music.
Newsted Head my caßette tape broke finally after 20 years and RUclips is free listening :)
Rest in peace, Chris. You were a true legend and a major influence. This was one of the first songs I truly loved and I'm going to remember you by blasting this all night. You finally broke your rusty cage.
Always thought this was a great high energy song to start the album with, RiP Chris.
San Andreas and RoadRash 95 😢
Burnout Paradise
Late night tv, circa 91. The video for this came on. "What is this!" Thanks for the sounds and some soundtracks to some of my youth. Godspeed.
I was 23 when I saw Soundgarden .. Break My Rusty Cage. Long Live Soundgarden.
🤍
And Johnny Cash's cover of this is extra special.
R.I.P. Chris Cornell
One of the greatest voices in rock history...
Rusty Cage eminds me of the last years of my youthfulness...sigh.
Words cannot explain the loss I feel for Chris. Deeply saddened. Rip my man, love ya
R.I.P. Chris
One of my favorites , now listening to this crying ... RIP Mr.Cornell.
Same sort of feelings of loss)
Dont know how to describe the feeling , its noy like losing a loved one or friend its like a hole where awe would have been. Or , oh its too hard to explain , just get it every time i put soundgarden on or Chris's other bands I Wish we could have had more songs but sadly not to be, but we do have that fabulous back catalogue.
Share music links all! 😂
Still just come here for sound garden
This is my favorite recording of all time.
