I'm a straight up Hip Hop head and I heard this song on a rock channel twice in the same day and it grabbed me like "take this punk!" I asked Google who is this! Now I'm here! Such a badass song!
My favorite Soundgarden song, lyrically speaking. “when the forest burns along the road, like God’s eyes in my headlights!” How fucking sick are those lyrics? and Chris’ voice along with Kim’s guitar playing and everything else just takes over your mind and body, I swear. I feel like I could lift up the Earth when listening to this song.
I just love his voice. There is something down to Earth about his voice. I remember listening to Soundgarden as a teenager. Now I am picking up on his music again.❤
"Too cold to a fire I'm burning diesel, I'm burning dinosaur bones." Ever since I first heard those lyrics back in 1993 I knew I was a Soundgarden fan for life.
"Rusty Cage" was covered by Johnny Cash on the 1996 album, Unchained, which won a Grammy Award for Best Country Album, and Cash's version earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. During at least three live performances by Soundgarden (July 21, 1996, in Knoxville, Tennessee, at Forks In The River, early November 1996 at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Illinois, and at Soundgarden's last pre-breakup show at the Blaisdell Arena, Honolulu, Hawaii, on February 9, 1997), Cornell introduced the song with a dedication to Cash. On Cornell's acoustic tour in late 2015, he started including "Rusty Cage" in the set-list, employing Cash's country-rock arrangement of the song.
Scrolled for miles and didn't find a lyric comment, so: Oh, you wired me awake And hit me with a hand of broken nails Yeah, you tied my lead and pulled my chain To watch my blood begin to boil But I'm gonna break, I'm gonna break my I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run Yeah, I'm gonna break, I'm gonna break my I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run Too cold to start a fire I'm burning diesel, burning dinosaur bones Yeah, I'll take the river down to still water And ride a pack of dogs But I'm gonna break, I'm gonna break my I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run Yeah, I'm gonna break, I'm gonna break my I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run Hit like a Phillips head into my brain It's gonna be too dark to sleep again Cutting my teeth on bars and rusty chains I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run When the forest burns along the road Like God's eyes in my headlights And when the dogs are looking for their bones And it's raining icepicks on your steel shore Well, I'm gonna break, I'm gonna break my I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run Well, I'm gonna break, I'm gonna break my I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run
Badmotorfinger was like the perfect blend of their raw, raucous earlier sound and the melodic accessibility of albums after it. Their best release ever? Perhaps...
Badmotorfinger is my fav SG album by far! I am tempted to say it shits on every other release they've done but that's not true lol. Superunknown is a masterpiece in its own right as are all the records really, but Badmotorfinger is my fav! Still has a metal tinge to it! Soundgarden still had plenty of balls on this record!
I agree and i using this 2 year old comment as ammon int he 20 plus yea rlong argument between me and my friend over whther this or superunknown is better.

Happy Travels Brother. Still get that same feeling in my soul hearing that voice from Above. Energy never dies. Say what up to Layne, Kurt, and Scott, and enjoy the Jam Session
To me “Badmotorfinger” is the greatest hard rock album of the 90’s no question…..everything about this record is….is just fuckin awesome….the POWER that band was able to harness together was sick….I read an interview with Kim around the time this came out & he was asked about young ladies attending their shows & he said “I think we frighten most young women?” 🤤I always loved that 🖤👍
The two little phrases at the beginning are very sweet. Beautiful. Then it gets going and it's fast and heavy, I love the energy. Then it really shifts gears and turns to sludge. I love sludge. What a unique song
Same here man, that Road Rash was awesome, it's how I came to like Soundgarden in the first place, and the Video was awesome that played when this song came on too, the motorbike guys doin all the tricks, so cool.
Hate to be that guy that points out the soundtrack was on the Panasonic 3DO version and not the Genesis/Megadrive, but it doesn't help that they also named the 3DO version "Road Rash" like the original. So can't blame anyone for that confusion.
Cornell's daughter singing bravely in his honor shortly after his death was heartbreaking. This is why I never could go through it, because deep down I know I'll be handing a lifetime of unimaginable mental anguish to my loved ones, hurting those closest to me the most.
It was a pleasant surprise to hear this while I was cruising around Paradise City. I was boosting through downtown when this came on, looked down on the track name, and thought: Hell yeah, it's go time!
RIP Chris you are loved dearly and remembered daily. Thank you for leaving behind music that helps me to relate and not feel so alone while going through my struggles. I’ve struggled with addiction to heroin and opiates as well as alcohol over the course of many years and your music along with the other grunge greats has allowed me to continue to live and get help to keep going and know that I was never alone in dealing with hanging in there, keeping faith and growing hope. When the lows set in I believed in myself just enough to break through my rusty cage and run
Shocked and saddened by the news of Chris Cornell passing. One of the all time greats! Badmotofinger came out my senior year and high school. Kick ass jams!!! Prays and peace to your family and friends in this devastating time. RIP

This song is the best example of a perfect opening track of an album. Everything about this song gets the listener listening to this album for the first time's attention and perfectly sets the mood for what's about to come after this song. I always have to listen to Rusty Cage first before Outshined and the rest of the album. The two flow together so well.
I saw one of this mans last shows... My main reasoning was "we have to see him at least once before he dies!"...4 days later, he broke his rusty cage to run through the cosmos... Much love. Rock the afterlife you awesome man!!
I used to get mad when someone would comment that a more recent form of media led them to a classic song they never heard before. As if it's right to judge everyone by the same criteria despite how many factors such as age, culture and personal taste make that idea obsolete. Now I realize I was being a dick and anything that leads someone to a band like Soundgarden is a good one. It's not like I have any ownership over any of the things I'm discussing, people tend to think of they heard of something before you that they somehow own it
It's hard to not be dismissive to someone who just discovered a tune u were jamming note for note 20 or 30 fucking years ago. swallow pride and see it from their (clueless and dope addled) side.
Rest in peace, Chris. You were a true legend and a major influence. This was one of the first songs I truly loved and I'm going to remember you by blasting this all night. You finally broke your rusty cage.
The most complicated rock composition of it's era until Tool came around. The amount of time it took them to get this right must have been substantial.
I just got through listening to... let me count.. TWENTY of my favourite soundgarden and Chris Cornell songs, came here to copy paste this track into another thread to REMIND people how fuckin GREAT this track was. Sometimes you forget how damned good they were and its been too long since i sat and listened to a Cornell Binge!! 😂 you gotta make yourself have a listen , go on do it now! Doesnt hurt so bad now as when he passed (and later on as it sank in) but i still get real feelings of loss when i listen to soundgarden tracks , dont know about you guys? Like we really lost someone who would have made more and more songs that i would love as we all grew old. Just dont get that with other artists whove passed . (Oh apart from Bowie!! Same sort of feelings of loss) Dont know how to describe the feeling , its noy like losing a loved one or friend its like a hole where awe would have been. Or , oh its too hard to explain , just get it every time i put soundgarden on or Chris's other bands I Wish we could have had more songs but sadly not to be, but we do have that fabulous back catalogue. Share music links all! 😂
Killer music is always out there actually, but nothing one can hear on radio. Rush or Soundgarden wouldn't even have a chance at hitting airwaves in this era of rampant mental numbness.
The 90s... musically, we had it so good but really had no idea at the time that all that killer original and diverse music would soon be a thing of the past and record companies would instead opt to lay turd after Nickelback turd. I'll still be rockin' out to this shit IN my 90s.
Rusty Cage is one of my favorite SG songs, I just love the riffs in it, and Cornell's vocals are incredible as always. If you like SG check out Pregnant Whale Pain, they just released their self titled album, they have nice riffs too, they're a little weird, but in a good way like Soundgarden and the vocalist is just insanely good. My favorite song from them is "Paperplanes", but listen too the others too they're great. A band like this is a rare find.
One of the best songs i've ever heard. Also one of the heaviest songs and i've listened to some heavy, heavy music. The 2:51 sections just oozes unaltered heavy sludgey goodness.
This, along with JCP and Slaves & Bulldozers are probably the most genius Soundgarden songs. I believe Cornell's greatest lyric-writing period was during Badmotorfinger.
You know you’re good whenever Johnny Cash covers one of your songs. RIP to two of the greatest to ever do it

People are fucking stupid now, just a fact.
On tape back in 1993 or so
If anything, I think it's amazing how a song could be "revived" and realize how timeless it is despite being a generation old.
@@kenfrazee41 'fraid people have always been stupid.
That's not a new development. ;)
Too awesome. I got this on 7” back in the day but appreciate it even more today…
There were still vinyl records being produced in 1992? I figured we moved onto cassettes and CDs by then.
rest in eternal peace Chris
Rest in peace, Chris. You were a true legend and a major influence. This was one of the first songs I truly loved and I'm going to remember you by blasting this all night. You finally broke your rusty cage.
Sage - "Would somebody please sleep with me?"
I would of lol sage is a childhood crush
Great song to play for the inmates after lockdown.............
David DeMoss
Especially when they start turning into zombies. ;)
coronavirus lockdown?
@@elephystry I know that reference! Mob of the Dead from Black Ops II :D
Almost thought this was about covid
The most complicated rock composition of it's era until Tool came around. The amount of time it took them to get this right must have been substantial.
yeah is this in 19:8 ?
@@GollyGeeWilikers yeah
Same sort of feelings of loss)
Dont know how to describe the feeling , its noy like losing a loved one or friend its like a hole where awe would have been. Or , oh its too hard to explain , just get it every time i put soundgarden on or Chris's other bands I Wish we could have had more songs but sadly not to be, but we do have that fabulous back catalogue.
Share music links all! 😂
I came here from the 90s \m/
Killer music is always out there actually, but nothing one can hear on radio. Rush or Soundgarden wouldn't even have a chance at hitting airwaves in this era of rampant mental numbness.
The 90s... musically, we had it so good but really had no idea at the time that all that killer original and diverse music would soon be a thing of the past and record companies would instead opt to lay turd after Nickelback turd. I'll still be rockin' out to this shit IN my 90s.
Then how would you know how to get a youtube channel?
That's what SHE said... Too soon? www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-43635864
Sean H me too
Your music has gotten me through some tough times, and now you're gone... R.I.P. Chris
Checked out 'pregnant whale pain', they're insanely good. thanks for sharing!
I have been told twice to check them out and twice i kick myself for not finding them sooner
SilentFlightParty yyy

Always thought this was a great high energy song to start the album with, RiP Chris.
This, along with JCP and Slaves & Bulldozers are probably the most genius Soundgarden songs. I believe Cornell's greatest lyric-writing period was during Badmotorfinger.
VioletCherryInBloom absolutely
One of my favorites , now listening to this crying ... RIP Mr.Cornell.
Forever missing you Chris & Chester.. Forever missing you.
