Probably one of my favourite songs of all time. Helmet have always been one of my favourite bands. Page Hamilton in my eyes is a genius. Only saw them once, in Osaka, Japan. I met all the guys outside the venue. Got heaps of pictures and a personalised signature from Page. This was in the late 90's. One of my wmost treasured memories
@@ThePubliusValerius - Thanks, it was a great first show. Mike Patton climbed up the wall in the theatre we were in and sang the whole song while he was 30 ft. in the air on theatre wall. We got to meet, Roddy, Mike P., Mike B and Billy of Faith No More out by the buses after....it was really fun, I was 16 years old
This was my shit in 1992. I listened to the cassette on constant repeat for weeks when it came out. I was 16 at the time and semi-homeless, crashing at various houses of skater friends of mine whose parents would tolerate me. There was this skater kid, everyone called him Jumbo, he was a legit midget. Not a dwarf like you see in movies, but a miniature person- normal proportions but just tiny. At 16 he was the size of a 9/10 year old kid and as far as I know, he never grew any bigger. A bunch of us fuckups and homeless/runaway punks and skaters would crash at his place, where he lived with his dad who was schizophrenic or something. He was on medication and usually cool, but every other week or so he would go off his meds, flip out and kick everyone out of the house with no notice and we would all have to scramble to find somewhere else to sleep for awhile. The house was a sparsely furnished mess. Jumbo's room had a mattress on the floor and nothing else. We all slept on the floor except for Jumbo, who got the mattress of course. The walls were covered in graffiti and had a bunch of holes punched through them. It would seem pretty rough to most people but it was paradise for us. So anyways, Helmet's album Meantime came out that summer in 1992 when I was staying off and on at Jumbo's and I listened to the cassette so much while staying there that anytime I hear any of the songs from that album they immediately transport me back to that time and place.
I'm surprised these guys never got way bigger. I've seen them twice live & their sound comes off so well live. Very crisp, crunchy & chunky, it just melts into your ears like a chocolate bar in the mouth.
It was the 90's and this whole album lived in my Sony Detachable Faceplate CD player of my 86 300Z Coupe. Played at the highest volume level my Boston Acoustics could play.. It was a glorious time.

Helmet are like Celtic Frost. They're one of those off-the-radar heavy bands that influenced everybody, but your average person doesn't know them by name.
Saw them with Rollins Band and Sausage at the Roseland in NYC in..guess it was 95...they're awesome live. And I just realized that was 30 effing years ago... EDIT: Just looked, it was August of 94.
Just a quick note for the younger fans of this band: It's really kind of crazy for the older people like me who grew up in this era to hear this song again. Youngsters may not know but when it came out Helmet had generated SO much buzz! MTV and other various music-centered magazines like Rolling Stone and Spin had anointed them as the band to change music and talked about them like they were the 2nd coming of Jesus. This band was like a cornered rabid animal with expectations from their record label and the music scene in general that was practically unbelievable. The bar was set so high they could never live up to the hype. I specifically remember someone saying, "Helmet is the next big thing, the next Nirvana". Note 4/1/2023 - I just want to stress that the comparisons I make between Helmet and Nirvana is mostly to do with record company sales projections and not which band is subjectively "better" than the other. Helmet and Nirvana are/were VERY different bands sonically. Nirvana could never have been as percussively heavy and occasionally brutal as helmet, and helmet was never going to write lyrics as silky-clever as Cobain.
Yeah I remember them being pushed to the forefront and being sold as the next big thing. As you say they were never going to live up to the hype. Loved this song though.
They did not make fun of Helmet. The quote was "If you saw these guys on the street, you wouldn't even know they're cool." Talking about the short hair.
My son's (10 y.o.) favorite band is Deep Purple, and tho they're not my favorite band, they are in my top 10. He's memorized the song order and tracks from 'Deepest Purple', and I couldn't be prouder. Recently, he heard Helmet for the first time and FREAKED OUT. When he went on a school trip a few weeks ago, the adults asked for music request for the long drive, and my son told me he requested 'Unsung', which even the friggin' adults didn't know. They found it on their phones, and were stunned that a 10 y.o. boy knew a specific song from 1992 that kicked SO MUCH ass. THAT'S MY BOY!!!!!
My daughter is 8 years old today. Her favorite band is Megadeth, favorite song is Holy Wars. Music taste I think is largely inherited. Her friends don't even know who Megadeth or even Korn are. Cool kid.
Dave Case's (the bassist since 2010) brother actually bought my childhood home back in NY right around the time he joined the band. It was really cool actually because I got to meet Dave, the house was in shortsale sadly but after my family moved out I stayed in the house for a few months while all the paperwork got done to take care of it. One day Dave and his brother dropped by to check on things and I was jamming in the garage (I play drums) with my buddy, we offered him to jam but they had more stuff to do. Got invited to their show at the Crazy Donkey though which was fucking siiiiiiiick.
The flawless Flow between the basist and the guitarist is a testament to the continuity for which they practice and deliver wonderfully giving us the audience and at best lucky observers a delicious treat. It's a pleasure to watch them.
First day of high school driver's ed I had this cassette tape on repeat in my Walkman, like a couple weeks after release. The guy next to me thought it was pretty cool, and maybe that I was cool too. I will never forget that moment. Still such a classic.. will never forget those days when music still existed in pure form.. RIP

The dead not forgotten, but celebrated and remembered as not to forget the beauty of what once was
Probably one of my favourite songs of all time.
Meantime was such a dope album. Loved all the songs
Thanks for sharing this with us!
My first show ever, Helmet and Faith No More back in the early 90's....I wasn't disappointed
Mine was pantera and anthrax.
My god I'm jealous - that would have been sick
@@ThePubliusValerius - Thanks, it was a great first show. Mike Patton climbed up the wall in the theatre we were in and sang the whole song while he was 30 ft. in the air on theatre wall. We got to meet, Roddy, Mike P., Mike B and Billy of Faith No More out by the buses after....it was really fun, I was 16 years old
@@aplus1080 - That's a good one too. I saw Pantera Sepultura and Prong....that was fire also
Damn thats a good one! I saw clutch and primus. 19-Along time ago lolz
Nacht Schreck wicked !!!
I wish I could live in the 90s.. fuck smartphones they ruined memory making moments
How do you listen to a cassette on repeat
Matthew Cochran haaaaa leave me alone bro
And no matter what was happening in that time or place it was great. The 90s were great and I just wanna go back.
I showed this to my buddy, he loves it so much he's dancing on the floor!
Thanks in a large part to Helmet for inspiring who we know now as Deftones.
the chord with half of the strings open at the end?
Damn what a shame lol

HUM is a huge influence on the Deft ones too
@@adderon Hum is great
This hits harder today than it did in 1993. What a classic!!
This was released 30 years ago and it still sounds and looks like last week. It hasn't aged a damn bit.
My gf threw mine out the window going down the interstate at 89 mph

'90s.
John Stanier, is one of my favourite drummers. His influence is why I still drum today.
Love his playing with Tomahawk
Ya he's sick. He plays hard like the pumpkins drummer.
How bout his work on Mark OF CAIN..
no commercialism no gimmicks no symbolism... just straight up music. helmet in the 2000s helmet forever

Your contribution left unnoticed some
Association with an image
Just credit time for showing up again
Attention wandered I’m left with it
Gone by sin too slowly
Can’t pass it up
Then I thought nothing is right
I turned it off
To die unsung would really bring you
Although wet eyes would never suit you
Walk through no archetypal suicide to
Die young is far too boring these days
Your will to speak clearly
Exposed too much
Unsung once too often
Could not rub off
Thanks.
Thank you. You’re doing the lords work
Bless 🤘❤
Merci
These guys sounded like nothing else at their time and should've been given way way more love than they got back in '90-'93.
Ironically, the title of this song sums up Helmet in one word.
A.. "Not"...in front of that should have been done .
Helmet are like Celtic Frost. They're one of those off-the-radar heavy bands that influenced everybody, but your average person doesn't know them by name.
@@robwalsh9843 This.
I’m not impressed with this song at all.
@@emiliorod6979 Admittedly, it's not their best. This was the obligatory "radio-friendly" song from the album, along with Give It.
HELMET IS THE REASON WE STARTED OUR BAND
Buying this album when it came out brought me here. Such an amazing and underrated band!
Same. Betty was my best all time for quite some times.
That's why the nineties were so fantastic to be a youngster
These guys laid down the sound of 90s rock.
They were well before their time.
SELF awareness
"The true competition lies within. Outpacing others means little if they weren’t ready; the mirror holds your only rival."
I saw these guys open for Faith No More in 92 and they did not disappoint
Loved this song though.
thanks for the info man! that surelly helped picture the "scene" they were into
Logic Makes Sense
I remember Beavis and Butthead making fun of them. "Huh Huh, uHuh uHuh, they look uHuh uHuhuh like, so Uhuhuh normal.""
They did not make fun of Helmet. The quote was "If you saw these guys on the street, you wouldn't even know they're cool." Talking about the short hair.
Saw 'em live, they opened for Ministry in '92. Good times.
I saw them open for Manson in 97 and got harassed by religious nuts! I told them I was there for Helmet ⛑!!!
I saw that tour. They were with ministry and sepultura
me either.
100 years from now people will discover this and say these men were not of this world.... Superb Rock never dies
You are absolutely right in what you say but this is Alternative metal. Not Rock..
@@jamescavalera alternative metal is a subgenre of ROCK!
My first concert was Helmet and Faith No More in Worcester MA. They definitely set the bar for every other show I went too. Was amazing.
My first was Metallica, suicidal tendencies, and candlebox. That’s was a high bar. Only eclipsed by ratm
Dude I was at that show! I drove down from Maine. :D
Worcester had a good Hardcore scene. Grew up there.
Cool story, bro
You raised that boy right ...you should be proud
Sounds like my 10 yr old lol
My daughter is 8 years old today. Her favorite band is Megadeth, favorite song is Holy Wars. Music taste I think is largely inherited. Her friends don't even know who Megadeth or even Korn are. Cool kid.
Arthur Bishop i wanna be friends with him my man!
The flawless
Flow between the basist and the guitarist is a testament to the continuity for which they practice and deliver wonderfully giving us the audience and at best lucky observers a delicious treat. It's a pleasure to watch them.
I saw them last night. One of the best shows I've ever seen!!!! And he still has that guitar (although a bit scuffed up)!!!
RIP
2:50 I love that shot of the guitarist and drummer playing side by side.
yeah it does look really cool
Still sounds as good as when I first opened the CD. How many bands still sound as fresh 30 years later ??? If this was released today it would kill
The 90's was a great era for rock (and rap too, rip Phife)

The rhythm section on this song is superb! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
One of the best songs of the Era
This song will be played atleast once a year for the rest of my life!. I'll keep this jam alive for the rest to hear this masterpiece!
A major props up to the drummer. It's rare to see drumming like that.
What did he do special tho?
Like what?
He wasn't just acting as the rhythm, he was also injecting melody heto the instrumentation with his fills.
@@gviruscalls7089 yes, this band's rhythm section always stood out to me too. Going to see them later this month. 🤘🏻

@@TexicanMr sorry man didn't mean to be rude lol, I'm honesty not even sure myself really, I heard Snoop said that too and I know smokin weed phillies etc originated in new York and snoop was westcoast and only popping off big time in 92 or 93 so he probably wasn't really on the east coast or had much to do with them at that point, so by the time Bushwick bill showed him that they'd obvious been doing it a little while before 92 on the east coast, loads of east coast emcees talk about it in their rhymes, wu tang etc. And this track was released in 92 right? I dunno, all guess work lol, that's just my take on it. Peace bro
