The best Fru has ever sounded and played. Amazing album, all killer tracks.
In this video you can tell in which songs he plugs straight to the board to achieve a pretty nasty distorted sound.

Totally agree. A masterpiece of an album. It combines unpretentious funk rock with a punk attitude and acid jazz dynamics. One of the milestones of the early 90s, along with Nevermind, Superunknown and a few others. Everything from songwriting, to lyrics, to recording has a raw energy, even Kiedis' voice stands out. All instruments exist sonically in their own cosmic sphere and that has to do mostly with how the whole thing was mixed and produced. Of course the main catalyst here is Frusciante and his guitar magic. Everything from Californication upwards, became more mellow and less powerful. You can pinpoint the songs that you say here.

@@AntoniosPapantoniou the chili peppers and listening to BSSM in my teens was the reason I picked up a guitar and I still play to this day. It is my all time favourite album. After One Hot Minute the Peppers have been on a steady artistic and sonic decline for my subjective tastes. The last two albums the released fairly recently are downright bad.
BSSM is lightning in a bottle and Fru’s guitar playing and writting is utterly original, tasteful and fierce. So many interesting and unique chord changes, voicings and melodies. It never gets old.

@@yiannisfaitakismatter of taste... i don't think it's bad but it has some interesting stuff contrasting a lot with debatable material, they should have done one album only with the best stuff, leaving out the romantic pop music I am not a fan (for a good and groovy verse there is always a romantic poppy chorus...). It's just different from bssm times which cannot be repeated forever. I am a BSSM rhcp fan and also Cali which I think has its powerful moments. But since By The Way until today it seems they decided to be experimental almost only on the pop rock side... like decided to serve a specific audience. Comfort zone. But yeah... rich, in their 6O's etc they are a great band, they play great but they are obviously on their decline phase, like all of their contemporaries... that went in that path earlier in my opinion.

@@limoncr5205 of course. That’s why I wrote ‘to my subjective taste’ in the follow up post.
Californication has its moments for sure and it’s an actually good selection of songs. Stadium Arcadium had a couple of good ones as well. But Cali is the album I can remember feeling so bummed out when I first played it. It was the first album that they really didn’t sound like the RHCP to me. Their sound has been changing ever since and to my again subjective tasted, they transformed to a band that I have very little interest in with their new stuff. As you said, they are taking the comfort road and they sound much more a generic pop band that would had been influenced by the RHCP than being the actual band.
That said, they are rich, successful and have graced the world with some amazing and inspiring music. They are the reason I picked up a guitar and I still play to this day. They surely are one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Way ahead of their time when they started combining Funk and rock in the 80s. Groundbreaking pioneers.

Just checked your jams, I think you have much to learn from Frusciante when it comes to feeling and being part of an ensemble. Cool stuff though.
