Being a parent comes with more responsibility than just feeding your kids and making sure they live through the day. As a father of 3 I feel that one of the most important things is just being present and taking some time to let them tell you about their day and the adventures they had. I work 12 hr shifts and commute an hr each way, it doesn’t leave me much time to do anything on the days I work. But when I get home I talk with my kids, get them ready for bed, read a few books, then sing the 2 younger ones to sleep. It means the world to them and they let me know it everyday. Nothing in the world is better than having your kids desire to spend time with you.

So when a kid turns 18 and becomes an adult and they can now set their own path they are so far into the weeds that getting out becomes an unnecessary challenge. While other people are building upon their success, they are just getting started. If they screw up on their way back to civilization, is it really their fault? Honestly, you call it a psychiatric trick, but we really don't hold parents accountable for how they raise their kids. Going to a psychiatrist and they say "You're parents fucked you up" is the closest you get to any kind of acknowledgement from anyone.
I'm in my 20's now and looking back I feel sadness almost all the time about how much I didn't experience as a child. All the cool stuff my parents did as kids VS my summers spent playing video games. I still rode bikes, went to parks and did some outdoor shit but the opportunities were fewer. Way less kids had the skills for "outside" so you either did that stuff alone or did indoor stuff. Kids today lack adventure and video games are basically the only place to scratch that itch these days. So many more rules both from society and from your parents mean you grow up without certain skills and your ability to push boundaries is so limited. By the time I realised half that stuff I was too old to take those risks. Detention Vs jail time and all that lol
@David Nilsson yeah im sure its situational. most kids i knew had newer games consoles and all this other stuff going on. my options were either hang with a bad crowd, somehow convince my parents to get me an Xbox and let me play games way above my age rating or make up for most of my social interaction in school. Granted i wasnt a big sports guy but i did love playing outside. I think its just the kind of environment you grow up in. big city vs country vs suburbs etc. rich vs poor neighbourhood
Dude, I've seen people in their 50's or 60's collecting toy cars or stuffed animals because they feel like they missed out of being kids. We never really stop being kids, and there's no age limit to try what we like, I mean, within reason. So if you really want to know how that was you can find out what older people did when they were kids and find a way to try it out: go to a mountain trail, grab a stick and pretend it's a sword and you're fighting an imaginary monster, find a place to go fishing or look for frogs or lizards, play in the rain, etc. It won't be exactly the same but I think what makes life beautiful is to keep that childish sense of wonder.

My mom was emotionally and physically abusive during my childhood. I got punched in the face by my mom in elementary before the bullies did it. Anyways, I talk to my mom about that shit and she goes " I never did that". I was like "Get the fuck out of here. Did you really think I was going to forget all that shit you did" Now she leaves me messages crying about how I never call her. Oh, I wonder why I don't call you mom! After the third time he does that, his mom grabbed him and said “When you don’t listen to me it’s like you are spitting in my face.” And then she drew up all her spit and then she spat into his four year old face. I blame parents more than I do kids. Those late 90s/early 00s of total fear mongering to parents ruined it for kids. From old enough to remember to when I was about 10 I played outside all the time with no issues. Then outta the blue one day my parents said I can't go ride my bike or go play around the neighborhood with my friends. All our parents wanted us to be inside and safe from "the dangers of the world". I'm almost 30 now and talking to friends my age most of us had this weird cut off moment from the outside world at one point because of our parents being scared. Then years later they had the audacity to say I was a lazy kid who only played video games and my generation was going to shit lolol fuckin hell there was no winning.
I grew up piss poor, never had owned a bike as a kid, but still learned by myself how to ride a bike by jumping on the other kids bikes in the neighborhood.
I didn't learn how to ride a bike until 21, I wish I would have been taught, but I had to ask a 15 year old to teach me. No shame in learning a skill, if you don't know learn
Learning to ride a bike is like anything else, better late than never. Driving, swimming, etc. Just be proud of yourself when you learn or accomplish something new! Definitely no shame in learning a new skill. That's what life is all about, learning and growing as a person. :)
I grew up on a gravel road with no neighbors. Me and my brother lived outside. Making forts, shooting guns and bows, exploring the woods, dirt bikes, climbed trees, played in creks, skateboarded on the concrete walk. No internet where we lived. 20 miles from the nearest store. Absolute freedom to do most of whatever our imaginations could come up with. Im in my mid 20s now and i miss that shit.
I've been bored because of the pandemic so I started skateboarding, therefor I've been more conscious about whose outside. I live right next to a junior high school and 2 elementary schools in a neighborhood that used to be FILLED with kids roaming the streets in packs all evening and night. Now you never see a soul outside. It's like a ghost town for kids. The only people I see outside are an occasional pair of friends riding a bike, wanna be lance Armstrong, and older women walking, and that's it. Our neighborhood used to be full of kids causing mischief. It's a sad sight to see. I think the pandemic made It worse for them.
im 38 still played outside when I was 10-12 into my teens. I feel that my age group was one of the last generations to do play outside for most of the day and then show up at home to go to sleep then to school. good times and scary times too but mainly good times
This just made me grateful for my dad and the notes he did hit as a father. Not perfect by any measure, but I cherish memories of him teaching me to ride a bike, throw a ball, etc.
Bill is speaking so many facts. If I decides to have kids, them not being afraid to approach me is a huge deal to me. Because you can't truly guide your kids through life if they don't want to come to you with their issues/questions. One way communication will fuck up your kids into adulthood. Very 1st vehicle I drove extensively was my grandfather’s old Ford truck 3 speed on the column. Nothing wrong with parents being old school because at least you had more respect for your elders, something lacking with kids or teens these days. Just my opinion. Yes, I was scared of “ the wrath of dad” but when I became a young adult he treated me as such and I miss him every day. Lost him to cancer, when I was 39, 17 years ago.
i remember the switch very clearly from when people were outside 24/7 to staying inside. it was around when playstation 2 got released that it all started going downhill. we played a little back then but we still felt that playing outside was more fun. then xbox 360 and playstation 3 got released then it just went downhill from there. i used to go outside all the time until around 2011 where games became way more fun than playing outside.
I find it very ironic that my neighborhood has "Slow Down: Save the Kids!" signs on half the lawns but I have not seen a kid outside playing in 15 years. Never saw a single sign like that when I was a kid and there would be street hockey games on every street as well as kids riding bikes, skateboards, roller skates all over the place.
I honestly think the slow down bullshit is for old ladies and prissy Karens who hate the sight of someone being less boring than them. This is relevant to the concept of how kids don't go out anymore because they think they can do what they want they can just sit in their room without consequences they think they can do whatever they want without consequences because nobody tells them what's right and what's wrong. Same goes for the Board of Education most schools don't even offer recess to kids. Most importantly I even had a couple of close family friends where their kids finished high school, these kids were in advanced placement and they didn't even know how to write a summary properly they did not know how to write a research paper they did not know how to write a essay etc Just like what happened to me in college I didn't actually learn how to properly be a good writer until I went to college. The education system in this country is so f*****. Just like what President Obama said back when he was a president, the problem is the tenured when you have a 10-year tenured you have immunity from being fired. Simply put teachers can do whatever they want they can decide not to teach the kids they can decide not to teach the kids about the importance of physical activity. You can learn much more about this concept if you watch the movie Superman and me it's a sociology movie about how bad the education system is Lastly I find it so comical that teachers and parents are caring more about their kids because of the pandemic because prior to the pandemic teachers did not care about a child's education. Now with the pandemic we have so many education programs for home some of these programs should have been offered already in school.
I loved playing outside as a kid because it was safer than home. I think it's important for kids to do. So many parents are scared their kids are gonna get snatched up, but I think there's a big difference between neglecting kids and letting them have some autonomy and freedom. And parents playing outside with their kids when they're really young is great for both of them!
That pond hockey opening.. so great. I loved playing pond hockey growing up. For us it wasn't a rock being tossed out on the surface. You would get a crowbar and chip a hole in the ice to measure the thickness. Then you would completely disregard and ignore the thickness of the ice you just measured and drive an ATV with a plow out on the pond because 1/4 of the way through manually shoveling the snow you were sweaty, tired, and desperate!

There was this one who kid in the neighborhood who would always race everyone there to get the first drink. One day, when he beat us to the spot as usual, it turns out a cicada was resting inside of the garden hose. It flew out of the hose and into his mouth as soon as the water was on. He's probably still spooked by those fuckers to this very day.

Some parents today are so out of control in-control. I witnessed a mom this past weekend who would not leave her children alone. Like she was constantly in a frenzy. She had to be sitting next to them the entire time, and if one of her children got up to go outside and play, she had to get all of her children up so she could have all her kids around her outside. All the parents in this group were the same way. The kids were not even 20 feet away from their table yet they all had to be up and standing around their kids while they tried to play with each other. I just can't imagine being parented like that and what it does to kids psychologically. It's madness

I was lucky to move to Switzerland when my kids were growing up in 2010s. We literally lived next door to the Swiss Freestyle ski training center, and they spent all summer learning how to incredibly difficult dangerous maneuvers in the air (into swimming pools, foam pits and on a trampoline). The rest of the time they roamed around outside in the town looking for things to do. One time I went looking for my two sons across the street where there was a farm. I walk into this barn and this farmer has my two sons (age 9 and 11 ) holding syringes and injecting the udders of dairy cows! It didnt seem to have any negative psychological impact on them

My parents never really had time for me when I was a kid so basically I am pretty much self taught. I taught myself how to ride a bike, how to skate, how to swim (learned deep diving 1st and when being comfortable, I applied that technique above water). I am not really mad because I have learned the 1st lesson in life - do it yourself if there is nobody out there helping you.
Since mid 70's Skateboard Parks bowls snake runs, Snowboarding..Played Rep soccer in high school and for the town! Played lot's of shinny hockey at the park, no rules! Played Ball hockey with equipment and running shoes, that took a lot out of you when your short:) I'm 58 and scratching my head now, what's going on? Skateboarding as everyone that did it knows, getting older you just don't bounce back from a slam, as you do in your teens not as indestructible as you thought lol how do you replace that? My childhood sucked compared to my friends. My dad used "playing outside" as extortion to get us to do chores and homework. It basically just made me not ask to go outside as much, it made me resent my dad, and made me hate school lol

For my two boys, I've taught them quite a bit. From walking, talking, using utensils, bike riding, wrestling, boxing, sports, controlling emotions, wood working, car tune ups, about nutrition, videogaming and I look forward to teaching them more as they become men. But sometimes I miss the time they were toddlers. I was superman to them and they were always hugging me.

It's too easy to talk trash about the kids but the reality is they have way more at their fingertips and we would be just like them if we had what they had. And balance is really the key to living a healthy life.
In the late 90s, parents became frightened of abductors. I was never allowed to even answer the door as a kid, whereas my older brother (14 years older) took the train to primary and secondary school when he was younger.

I've been a Bill Burr fan for years but only recently discovered Kevin Hart. Brilliant guys. I've really enjoyed Bill's personal growth and development over the last few years. There's a marked change in his reactions to things, and his self-awareness that I really admire. So many people simply can't or won't do the work. Kudos to him.

I know Bill said this more succinctly but I'll echo the sentiment. I'm not considered one of todays kids but as a youngster in the 2000's and early 2010's (I feel old all of a sudden but I digress) I grew up with a house that had Satellite TV most of the time with several channels dedicated to kids shows, a Game Boy Advance sp, and a PS2. Even living in a trailer that's a pretty sweet deal compared to tossing a ball in the air and catching it out on the lawn. fast forward to 13 when facebook came around and that was all she wrote (and I was late to get on). I'm sure if I came up with nothing but an hour of cartoons on saturday morning and an Atari 2600 I would've gone outside a lot more. I don't for one second blame kids coming up with ipad access at 4 and smartphones at 12 for not going outside like kids used to.
I was born in the mid 50's and I roamed miles from home on my bike and played on railroad tracks. I was obsessed with reptiles. I got snake bit quite a few times, fortunately nonvenomous.Then at 18 hitch hiked out west then worked all over the west on US Forest Service and BLM reforestation contracts. All day in all weather on mountain sides sometimes steeper than a cows face. I'm still in good physical shape because of being outside. I couldn't even imagine.

Being a parent comes with more responsibility than just feeding your kids and making sure they live through the day. As a father of 3 I feel that one of the most important things is just being present and taking some time to let them tell you about their day and the adventures they had. I work 12 hr shifts and commute an hr each way, it doesn’t leave me much time to do anything on the days I work. But when I get home I talk with my kids, get them ready for bed, read a few books, then sing the 2 younger ones to sleep. It means the world to them and they let me know it everyday. Nothing in the world is better than having your kids desire to spend time with you.

As a kid with electronics and helicopter parents, realizing you missed out is like having a rock in your shoe that you can't find.
I'm in my 20's now and looking back I feel sadness almost all the time about how much I didn't experience as a child. All the cool stuff my parents did as kids VS my summers spent playing video games. I still rode bikes, went to parks and did some outdoor shit but the opportunities were fewer. Way less kids had the skills for "outside" so you either did that stuff alone or did indoor stuff. Kids today lack adventure and video games are basically the only place to scratch that itch these days. So many more rules both from society and from your parents mean you grow up without certain skills and your ability to push boundaries is so limited. By the time I realised half that stuff I was too old to take those risks. Detention Vs jail time and all that lol

Dude, I've seen people in their 50's or 60's collecting toy cars or stuffed animals because they feel like they missed out of being kids. We never really stop being kids, and there's no age limit to try what we like, I mean, within reason. So if you really want to know how that was you can find out what older people did when they were kids and find a way to try it out: go to a mountain trail, grab a stick and pretend it's a sword and you're fighting an imaginary monster, find a place to go fishing or look for frogs or lizards, play in the rain, etc. It won't be exactly the same but I think what makes life beautiful is to keep that childish sense of wonder.

After the third time he does that, his mom grabbed him and said “When you don’t listen to me it’s like you are spitting in my face.” And then she drew up all her spit and then she spat into his four year old face. Although my father beat us with his belt and his fists and my mother spanked using our toys, I CANNOT get over his mother spitting in his face at 4 years old over a task that was too adult for a 4 year old to do.

It was embarrassing when I was a child and my friend's dad had to teach me how to throw a football because mine was always too busy. But at the same time my father was younger than I am now and I can understand how hard it would be to provide for a family and fulfill their needs.

I blame parents more than I do kids. Those late 90s/early 00s of total fear mongering to parents ruined it for kids. From old enough to remember to when I was about 10 I played outside all the time with no issues. Then outta the blue one day my parents said I can't go ride my bike or go play around the neighborhood with my friends. All our parents wanted us to be inside and safe from "the dangers of the world". I'm almost 30 now and talking to friends my age most of us had this weird cut off moment from the outside world at one point because of our parents being scared. Then years later they had the audacity to say I was a lazy kid who only played video games and my generation was going to shit lolol fuckin hell there was no winning.

I grew up on a gravel road with no neighbors. Me and my brother lived outside. Making forts, shooting guns and bows, exploring the woods, dirt bikes, climbed trees, played in creks, skateboarded on the concrete walk. No internet where we lived. 20 miles from the nearest store.
Absolute freedom to do most of whatever our imaginations could come up with. Im in my mid 20s now and i miss that shit.

I've been bored because of the pandemic so I started skateboarding, therefor I've been more conscious about whose outside. I live right next to a junior high school and 2 elementary schools in a neighborhood that used to be FILLED with kids roaming the streets in packs all evening and night. Now you never see a soul outside. It's like a ghost town for kids. The only people I see outside are an occasional pair of friends riding a bike, wanna be lance Armstrong, and older women walking, and that's it. Our neighborhood used to be full of kids causing mischief. It's a sad sight to see. I think the pandemic made It worse for them.
They're probably playing games all day so I don't think so, but their shoulders and backs will be aching 10 years from now.

This just made me grateful for my dad and the notes he did hit as a father. Not perfect by any measure, but I cherish memories of him teaching me to ride a bike, throw a ball, etc.
Bill is speaking so many facts. If I decides to have kids, them not being afraid to approach me is a huge deal to me. Because you can't truly guide your kids through life if they don't want to come to you with their issues/questions. One way communication will fuck up your kids into adulthood. Very 1st vehicle I drove extensively was my grandfather’s old Ford truck 3 speed on the column. i remember the switch very clearly from when people were outside 24/7 to staying inside. it was around when playstation 2 got released that it all started going downhill. we played a little back then but we still felt that playing outside was more fun. then xbox 360 and playstation 3 got released then it just went downhill from there. i used to go outside all the time until around 2011 where games became way more fun than playing outside.
I find it very ironic that my neighborhood has "Slow Down: Save the Kids!" signs on half the lawns but I have not seen a kid outside playing in 15 years. Never saw a single sign like that when I was a kid and there would be street hockey games on every street as well as kids riding bikes, skateboards, roller skates all over the place.
I honestly think the slow down bullshit is for old ladies and prissy Karens who hate the sight of someone being less boring than them. It’s more dangerous to weave around these signs in tight residential streets. Makes me consider toppling every one I drive by now cause there ain’t no kids playing outside now!!
Tom Green was talking about the same topic on a Huffington Post article and on a video, how kids and adults rely too much on digital obviously. Kids these days they rather play video games, they never want to go outside and play or even socially interact with people the same goes with adults.

Most importantly it's not even social interactions, so many of us today rely on Amazon and s*** like that to get personal Goods people don't go outside anymore and buy stuff and socially interact with people. This same statement was made by people who work at Amazon and who were in the reaction video for the South Park Amazon episode. Comedy Central did a special presentation of the episode where they had previous Amazon employees to do a compare and contrast of how close the episode resembles the experience of being an Amazon employee at the warehouse.
In terms of kids think about what Morgan Freeman said a couple years ago it always start in the home. Parents don't tell their kids to go outside, they let their kids do whatever they fucking want. I see so many kids on social media who are just trying to start s*** with people. That's the problem with a lot of parents and teachers they don't tell kids to not talk to strangers. This is relevant to the concept of how kids don't go out anymore because they think they can do what they want they can just sit in their room without consequences they think they can do whatever they want without consequences because nobody tells them what's right and what's wrong.
Same goes for the Board of Education most schools don't even offer recess to kids. Most importantly I even had a couple of close family friends where their kids finished high school, these kids were in advanced placement and they didn't even know how to write a summary properly they did not know how to write a research paper they did not know how to write a essay etc
Just like what happened to me in college I didn't actually learn how to properly be a good writer until I went to college. The education system in this country is so f*****.
Just like what President Obama said back when he was a president, the problem is the tenured when you have a 10-year tenured you have immunity from being fired. Simply put teachers can do whatever they want they can decide not to teach the kids they can decide not to teach the kids about the importance of physical activity. Lastly I find it so comical that teachers and parents are caring more about their kids because of the pandemic because prior to the pandemic teachers did not care about a child's education. Now with the pandemic we have so many education programs for home some of these programs should have been offered already in school.

I loved playing outside as a kid because it was safer than home. I think it's important for kids to do. So many parents are scared their kids are gonna get snatched up, but I think there's a big difference between neglecting kids and letting them have some autonomy and freedom. And parents playing outside with their kids when they're really young is great for both of them!

That pond hockey opening.. so great. I loved playing pond hockey growing up. For us it wasn't a rock being tossed out on the surface. You would get a crowbar and chip a hole in the ice to measure the thickness. Then you would completely disregard and ignore the thickness of the ice you just measured and drive an ATV with a plow out on the pond because 1/4 of the way through manually shoveling the snow you were sweaty, tired, and desperate!

Some parents today are so out of control in-control. I witnessed a mom this past weekend who would not leave her children alone. Like she was constantly in a frenzy. She had to be sitting next to them the entire time, and if one of her children got up to go outside and play, she had to get all of her children up so she could have all her kids around her outside.
All the parents in this group were the same way. The kids were not even 20 feet away from their table yet they all had to be up and standing around their kids while they tried to play with each other.

I was lucky to move to Switzerland when my kids were growing up in 2010s. We literally lived next door to the Swiss Freestyle ski training center, and they spent all summer learning how to incredibly difficult dangerous maneuvers in the air (into swimming pools, foam pits and on a trampoline). The rest of the time they roamed around outside in the town looking for things to do. One time I went looking for my two sons across the street where there was a farm. I walk into this barn and this farmer has my two sons (age 9 and 11 ) holding syringes and injecting the udders of dairy cows! It didnt seem to have any negative psychological impact on them

My parents never really had time for me when I was a kid so basically I am pretty much self taught. I taught myself how to ride a bike, how to skate, how to swim (learned deep diving 1st and when being comfortable, I applied that technique above water). My childhood sucked compared to my friends. My dad used "playing outside" as extortion to get us to do chores and homework. It basically just made me not ask to go outside as much, it made me resent my dad, and made me hate school lol
You had the chance to "buy" your outside time by caring come of your load at home, but choose to not do it. Somehow the fault it's upon your dad because your friends had it better. School also fits into the charade for some unknown reason. Jesus you need a better therapist asap hahaha

For my two boys, I've taught them quite a bit. From walking, talking, using utensils, bike riding, wrestling, boxing, sports, controlling emotions, wood working, car tune ups, about nutrition, videogaming and I look forward to teaching them more as they become men.
But sometimes I miss the time they were toddlers. I was superman to them and they were always hugging me.

It took me a long time to learn how to ride a bike. Other kids got the hang of it by the time they were 7 years old. I didn't learn until I was 11. I still lose my balance once in a while and fall down.
I blame parents more than I do kids. Those late 90s/early 00s of total fear mongering to parents ruined it for kids. From old enough to remember to when I was about 10 I played outside all the time with no issues. Then outta the blue one day my parents said I can't go ride my bike or go play around the neighborhood with my friends. All our parents wanted us to be inside and safe from "the dangers of the world". I'm almost 30 now and talking to friends my age most of us had this weird "cut off from the outside world" moment at one point in our young lives because of our parents being scared.

And i went back to visit a while back, and it was so depressing. Middle of summer. No kids playing, no life. Just absolutely dead

Bill got a more balanced perspective which I really appreciate. Kevin was way too dismissive and trash talk about the kids today. It's too easy to talk trash about the kids but the reality is they have way more at their fingertips and we would be just like them if we had what they had. You can't blame them for wanting to play video games all day tbh. They're fucking fun and just a few seconds away. Someone, the parents, got to show them balance. And balance is really the key to living a healthy life.
Problem is, there really is no balance and the kids are getting dumber and dumber. All the technology and yet they/we are becoming mental degenerates.
In the late 90s, parents became frightened of abductors. I was never allowed to even answer the door as a kid, whereas my older brother (14 years older) took the train to primary and secondary school when he was younger.

I totally agree with Bill. I respect my Dad but I’m not afraid of him. Never beat me or nothing but he made sure I acted right when I would get out of line. Today’s parents are scared of their kids and let them do whatever they want. Only school and outside for the week. Games only on weekends, is gonna be the rule 4 for my kids. Plus no phones until jr high, if u give em to them younger YOU RUIN THE KID

I know Bill said this more succinctly but I'll echo the sentiment. I'm not considered one of todays kids but as a youngster in the 2000's and early 2010's (I feel old all of a sudden but I digress) I grew up with a house that had Satellite TV most of the time with several channels dedicated to kids shows, a Game Boy Advance sp, and a PS2. Even living in a trailer that's a pretty sweet deal compared to tossing a ball in the air and catching it out on the lawn. fast forward to 13 when facebook came around and that was all she wrote (and I was late to get on). I'm sure if I came up with nothing but an hour of cartoons on saturday morning and an Atari 2600 I would've gone outside a lot more. I don't for one second blame kids coming up with ipad access at 4 and smartphones at 12 for not going outside like kids used to.

I was born in the mid 50's and I roamed miles from home on my bike and played on railroad tracks. I was obsessed with reptiles. I got snake bit quite a few times, fortunately nonvenomous.Then at 18 hitch hiked out west then worked all over the west on US Forest Service and BLM reforestation contracts. All day in all weather on mountain sides sometimes steeper than a cows face. I'm still in good physical shape because of being outside. I couldn't even imagine.
I'm very glad the majority of my childhood was being kicked out of the house in the morning and not allowed back in before Dinner. I'm 24 so maybe I'm not alone in this
