      This is a common misconception... you don't learn just by teaching. You learn through all the prep and questions you get from your students. Teaching is good at facilitating learning, but it's not necessarily the cause of it. I've seen plenty of 'veteran' teachers who are are in exactly the same place as when they started 20 years ago because they don't put in that extra work.

    • @84y87
      @84y87 3 года назад +9

      @@SomeRandomDevOpsGuy It's not a total misconception though. I'm a student and for me "teaching" my peers sometimes result in me clarifying my own doubts and weak concepts somehow. Moreover, there have been several instances when I thought I knew a concept well but after attempting to teach it to a peer, I realized I infact didn't know that concept. So it does certainly help. But you're right that it can never ever come close to substituting sheer practice and theory learning. It's more like a super active form of retrospection.

    • @PHeMoX
      @PHeMoX 3 года назад +6

      @@84y87 It is 100% a misconception. And demonstrably so. Just like how those that teach, rarely tend to be the best in their field. So... no offence to any teacher out there, but just because they share knowledge, doesn't mean they share good knowledge or let's say 'the best' knowledge. In fact, even worse, a lot of teachers are kind of bad at teaching (I've seen plenty of teachers try and only maybe two or three ever managed to really get students invested in the subject they taught, versus 100+ teachers that bored people to death. ie. not a good ratio and this is a pretty universal issue) and many are not actually up to speed about what's going on in the commercial world or at the cutting edge of their field. The analogy about expecting a 10th grade physics teacher to somehow, after years of teaching low level stuff, to become a knowledgeable person on the subject of nuclear physics is a very accurate one. Such an expectation... with lack of a friendlier but accurate word, is stupid.

      Chess engines don't understand chess in the sense that chess is not just crunching positions. There is psychology, there is fatigue, there is stress... human chess is limited by our computation power and is based on intuition more than just computing one millions moves per seconds. The engine is correct, but it doesn't understand any of these. Is like saying that a calculator understand maths, sure they can compute 5000 digit of pi in one second and I don't, but the calculator still has no idea of what is a circle.

But they are correct and they do understand chess, it is us, humans, who don't understand it well enough. • @guardianangel1468
      @guardianangel1468 3 года назад +1

      @@IVANOsijek007 Of course the chess engines understand chess. It's just that Levy means in the context of a game played by humans. If a human played the top engine move for one move, sometimes it would be okay, but sometimes it would be impossible to defend because it's very aggressive - in short, to play the top engine move in a position, you need the skills to back up that move or else it will all fall apart. Even Magnus Carlsen plays Alpha-zero style moves that he can't back up, and subsequently loses the game.

    Levy, don't take this defeat to your heart!! You fought like a tiger in ALL of your games and it is just a momentary lapse of chance. Even your draws are pieces of great fight, so, for me this tournament will be the key in your future successes. You know, Romania had a great soccer team years ago and the trainer who built it always said: "We need to learn to score at least one more goal then our opponents". There were many defeats with this strategy, but learning how to attack pushed that team to win Europe's Champions League in 1987, against every odds possible. You're on a good path, even if you don't feel it!! Great job Levy!!

    Be kind to yourself Levy. You've lifted up so many and deserve the very best. It will come. We feel your trajectory. I have multiple sclerosis and for years needed to do monotonous memory exercises to prevent mental degradation. I played chess as a child, only knowing how to move pieces. After seeing one of your videos, and loving it, I 'lent' into chess. Over time this has taken the place of my memory exercises, with the approval of my doctors, and I'm sharper than I've been in years. I started 18 months ago with a rating of around 500, and just broke 1050 from just watching your videos. You are an inspiration powerhouse that has had a real impact on my life. Thank you and stay strong brother.
