Siskel & Ebbert pronounced it "koy-ahnis-SKWAT-si" for Koyaanisqatsi supposedly a Hopi word for "life out of balance."
Hey Darren, appreciate your reviews. But quick question are you recommending the New or Newer Evil Dead Remake?
Regarding Children of Men, if you pay close attention, the date of everyone going infertile aligns the date of a very bad disease/vaccine event. It is subtle, the the data is there to make that connection.
What do you think about Arlington Road?
@@wellnesspathforme6236actually it turned out to be a not so very bad disease.
FYI "Remember Remember the 5th of November" was not a line made famous by V for Vendetta (which is a great movie), but is in fact its from a famous Poem. The 5th of November is Guy Fawkes night in the UK. Its a celebration night to represent the anniversary of when Guy Fawkes tried to blow up Parliament in 1605 AD. The poem was written in 1626 by John Milton about Guy Fawkes failed attempt and these lines are always said by kids leading up or on the 5th Of November for centuries.
Thanks for mentioning the hilarious "Tucker and Dale vs. Evil". It's one of my favorites. I can't describe ANY scenes in it to someone who hasn't seen it. They can't understand why I think the wood chipper or wasp nest/chainsaw scenes are so funny.
William Friedkin past Aug. 7. He was such an interesting guy. I miss him.
Thank you. Genuinely. Your ability to summarise and filter is appreciated.
And watchmen still makes me smile all these years later. Rorschach is just perfectly cast.
The 5th of November isn't just your birthday and a quote from a movie. It's a long standing expression regarding Guy Fawkes attempt to blow up the British Parliament so directly linked to V. November 5th is now treated as a bit of a holiday and called Guy Fawkes night or more commonly Bonfire night with large bonfires. Sometimes Fawkes is burned in effigy but these days it is really just a bonfire. Mainly celebrated in Britain and in Newfoundland in Canada.
Running Scared is so wild. I have loved it ever since I first watched it. It goes in so many crazy directions and has a very unique tone for an action/thriller movie
Tucker and Dale versus Evil was great, and definitely will be rewatching it this month! Thanks for this amazing list
I've really grown to love your channel. Another round of solid movie recs.
I've already seen all of these of course but sometimes I forget what to put on my rewatch list. Thanks for digging through these.
I loved Europa Report. Excellent hidden jem just like The Last Days on Mars and Sunshine.
Tucker and Dale is not as widely known as it should be. That movie is hilarious, sweet and really well done.
I gotta love how your deep cuts are a bunch of movies that I would totally recommend as well plus one or two I've never seen
Darren-san, you're the professional, I'm just a "punter", as the English say, but I did want to point out something about "Koyaanisqatsi". The word is from the Hopi language, and means something like "time out of balance". The film is 40+ years old now, but when it came out it was presented as a rather scary critique of the ever-accelerating pace of modern living, which would inevitably lead to, well, more or less where we are now, with our world going up in flames. Fwiw... 🤷🏻♂️
I watched "Koyaanisqatsi" in the '90's with my elderly mom without knowing what it was. I was mesmerized by it and so was mom! The music from Phillip Glass is as stunning as the photography. If you're ready to just let your mind wander and stay in a good vibe for 90 minutes it's well worth watching.
It's the first in a trilogy, the second is my favorite Powaqqatsi, it's very much like the first movie with some scenes that are absolutely unforgettable, I'm pretty sure it's on Tubi. The third one Naqoyqatsi is terrible, it's a bunch of very dated computer graphics that are nearly unwatchable. If you're into this type of film, with kinda random breathtaking scenes from around the world set to beautiful music, you have to watch the movies Baraka and Samsara, I think they're on Tubi too, these are two of the greatest visual films ever made.
Memento is such a classic! He does an impeccable job, and it is so well thought out!
I could not agree with you more about "Let The Right One In" - stellar cinematography and outstanding writing/cast. Absolutely one of my fav films of all time!
As a movie buff I’ve always appreciated your content and recommendations.
Running scared was such a great movie because there was so many twist and turns that you didn’t expect.
Killer list, I would've missed a lot of these. Thank you sir! 👍
I genuinely love listening to you promote films. I agree with you on pretty much all of them! I’m not as big a fan of foreign films, (except for Kung Fu Hustle, I always recommend that one) but I always trust that you’re right on the money as far as awesomeness. Please, keep doing what you do. So appreciated! Memento, Children of Men, and As Above, So Below are hands down three of my favorite films of all time, love hearing the shout out! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Quite a long list. Thanks for the recommendations you slid in there. Will definitely save me time and grief in September.
I like that you mentioned Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, but I would've listed it under comedy. It is really funny, but it is gory.
Running Scared is so badass… it reminds me of Abel Ferrara movies like “King Of New York” with a mix of Brian DePalma’s Scarface.
Awesome quick list Darren! Thank you. You've got the best movie recommendations!
Great list, I love Drag Me to Hell, and Bill Murray is too funny in Wild Things! And nothing wrong with your salt and pepper look 😁
Thanks for the heads up. After I've already exhausted all of the new and original content, sometimes I don't feel like doing the deep dive into Amazon's library to find something else to watch.
Great job managing such a long list so well in that amount of time!
Shout out to Gene Jones! I worked with him on a play in the early '90s. Great guy. Also looking forward to rewatch Bound, Children of Men, Let the Right One In and more--what a line-up of choices.
Thanks for the List and Video 😀
Thanks Darren! Everyone should see Tucker & Dale vs Evil... I watched Bodies Bodies Bodies the other night - s'ok - I was hoping for Tucker & Dale! Anaconda and Lake Placid are always a fun time!
Daz you could have made this in 3 parts. Having said that, it show you are genuine and wanted to let it all out. Thank you ! Watching Only Murders in the Building, my wife Sue doesn't know who Martin Short is or even Steve Martin so I put on the films "Innerspace" and "The Three Amigos". She does now. I am thinking for her next experience "The Man with Two Brains". Classics and "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels". She knows who Michael Cain is.
I think I mentioned in the past that Stanley Kubrick was a neighbour and friend of mine in St.Albans for many years. He was somewhat of a recluse as am I but we would spend time together riding and walking around Childwickbury. His son in law Yan was a pal along with his kids Dominic and Manuel. The good old days. I live in Portsmouth now and am retired. I really appreciate your channel. Sometimes you mention a movie I have never seen. Not often but from time to time you do and I thank you.
Thanks Van ..u are my goto always and so excited about this list thank u
Nice to see Bound being highlighted
Wow! So many of my favs! Children of Men, Momento, The Machinist, Europe Report... looking forward to chilly movie nights ahead!
The scene in "The Covenant" where Jake Gyllenhaal's character talks about there being a hook in him is beyond fantastic. If the movie were not a solid good watch otherwise, it would be worth watching for that one scene alone.
Running Scared was a good film. Another underrated movie is "Death Sentence" with Kevin Bacon.
Running Scared is worth your time. Don't watch any previews. Just let it happen. You can't predict wear this movie's gonna go and by the end, you're like "How the F** did we get here?". It's one of those movies.
I’m about as excited as you seem to be, it’s been a while since prime got me into streaming long-time-no-see movies that I loved back in the day
Happy Birthday Darren, mine was today, I think I got a few years on you tho. Great list as usual
I have to tell you that I have gone from not anything to find to watch to a whole bunch of lists of things to watch, and aside from me spending too much time on my a55, it’s been really helpful because I am going through a hard time in life and need as much escapism as I can get.
You just earned a subscriber. I am also a huge fan of Running Scared too! I'm glad I found your channel!
I remember at least half a dozen times seeing Running Scared on the Comcast Guide and almost always it was Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal and being so let down😢
Thank you for always bringing us the Best
This has to be on US Prime Video because the UK one doesn't have any of these.
Running Scared is a VERY good action/horror flick...the outrageous situations just continue to escalate throughout the entire movie...a very easy recommend if you've never seen it...
The Covenant is my surprise of the year. Not going to win awards but it probably should. Well filmed and leaves the viewer emotionally invested throughout.
Very good list, I love As Above So Below, such a creepy movie, already own the blu ray but think it's time for a rewatch
Wait OMG you recommended my all time favorite Koyaanisqati. Great movie. Phillip Glass soundtrack and stunning Ron Fricke cinematography make this always rewatch able.
I was lucky enough to catch this amazing film on the big screen at an 'art house' theater when it was first released. Stunning.
First time seeing As Above, So Below get some recognition! Great film.
Running Scared was great, "The Dukes a F*g" 😂
I've got to say, Willem Dafoe is one incredibly gifted Actor. Not recognised enough IMHO
Let the Right One In is one of my all-time favorite movies. We watch it every Halloween season. If you're into stark, quiet beauty it really pulls you in. "Beautiful" doesn't even seem like a strong enough word. I often watch scenes and trailers and reviews throughout the year to get my fix.
Got some good ones on here. Btw, you're always recommending stuff to us. I got some recommendations for you.
(Note: if you know of these because you previously covered them, sorry. I have bad sleep apnea.)
Halloween category: (I'm nuts for horror comedy)
- Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (maybe one of the first)
- Idle Hands
- Cockneys Vs Zombies
- Student Bodies
-The Stuff - Larry Cohen at his satirical best.
Deep Cuts - Horror
- Destroyer - 1988 with Lyle Alzado and Anthony Perkins. Just got a 2020 rerelease. Brought out in the time of the old killer's-electric-chair-didn't-work-right movies, ahead of Shocker and The Horror Show aka House 3.
- Salvage - 2006 A serious horror based Groundhog Day with a twist that puts M. Night Shyamalan twists to shame. Has some of the same vibe as The Jacket with Adrien Brody.
Rom Com (not my fave normally either. But some of mine are wacky and I just put them here to consolidate.)
- Up The Creek - 1984 Tim Matheson leads a rag tag team of river rafters from the WORST college ever.
One Crazy Summer - speaks for itself. But there's John Cusack,Bobcat Goldthwaite and Demi Moore
- No Small Affair - Jon Cryer and Demi Moore
- Mannequin - 1987 - can't help myself. One of my favorites of all time.
- Spring Break - the original from 1983.
@19:38, ok man. This movie is great! I watched it because of this video. Thank you so much!!!
Thank you!🎥🎥🎥
They added The Birdcage too, very funny, starring Robin Williams and Gene Hackman.
Running Scared is a totally underrated movie ! And Paul Walker is actually good. As a petrol head who just turned 18 when FnF 1 came out I love the man one way or another, but seing him not being just the pretty boy this time, but really act properly is great. Everybody else in this movie is also extremely watchable at the very least. You gotta totally give this movie a try if you haven't already.
When it first came out i was like huh i expected my pockets aint empty cuhhh line 😂😂😂
Lots of solid flicks on this list. Have you seen Violent from 2014? It's an absolutely beautiful Norwegian film. It's free on Prime right now.
I can’t believe I haven’t seen that title card for Army Of Darkness before
as above so below is one of my favorite flicks to date in this style, without a doubt!
Love the editing
Dang, another truly stacked list of additions, I don't even know where to begin! "The Hunt" is hilarious, and "Tucker & Dale vs Evil" is definitely underrated. And I don't care what other's people say, we enjoyed "The Batman."
This is a different "The Hunt" ... not a comedy.
@@button9 Didn't say it was a comedy. I said it is hilarious, which it is. Wife and I watched it in theater and laughed the whole way through, hahaha! "The Hunt" is by the same production team as the "Purge" franchise, as a sort of reverse-Purge where stereotypical over-the-top conservative trope-characters are hunted by (ironically)rich creepy virtue-signalling out-of-touch leftists. Is there anything funnier?!
@@button9 Yeah, this "Hunt" is actually quite excellent and quite sobering. Same writer director did "Another Round" also starring Mads and also really excellent. That one is on Hulu.
The Batman is so mediocre and forgettable ... nice looking boring movie.
Cow wah neh stots sea. I had to watch what I remember was the 8 hours of it when I was a teenager.
Great FLICK CONNECTION, Darren and many thanks for sharing with us. Looking forward to watching 2001-A Space Odyssey 👍👍👍
Koyaanisqatsi’s actual pronunciation is in the titles’ named audio track 😂 But it was also a movie that grabbed myself and a few friends even as teenagers - just unbelievable marriage of images and music. So powerful.
Blow is in my opinion Johnny Depps best movie! Great story, great, direction, great cinematography! And Ray Liotta with a near career best turn against type. Everyone is at the top of their game. Tucker and Dale is another great movie too!! Knew it was an instant classic within the first 15 minutes of watching it for the first time.
Remember remember the 5th of November, my Birthday too! New subscriber, great channel!
Merch: t-shirt, I’ll buy it.
Tucker and Dale was genius humor
RE; Let the right one in, I saw it back in the day. Absolutely should be part of a sub-genre Vampire class.
To say I despise sub titled movies is putting it mildly, just the same the "cadence" of conversation in this
is more than tolerable ! Very few movies stick in my memory like this did. Highly suggest you see it...
Different Thumbnail. Almost didn’t recognize
Same!
I was more surprised at the title 😛
Same.
Definitely going bald bro
Same
Wow! That’s quite a list!
Right? and most of them are available now
Happy birthday Darren.
DVD is tha shet thanks brah 🤜🏻💥🤛🏻
RUNNING SCARED is a great movie! I haven't seen it in a long time! Going to watch it again
"October Sky" is an anagram of "rocket boys."
Thanks!
There's a Jonestown doc with actual footage. Came out, early 90's?
To ensure the ships were Not seen in any other future movies, Kubrick had all the models Destroyed.
So when '2010; the Year We Make Contact' was made, they had to watch 2001 in order to get an idea of how to do the spaceships.
They also added Diggstown! A great movie staring James Woods, Lou Gossip Jr. and Oliver Platt. It’s a boxing con movie!
Personally I prefer the 1986 Running Scared with Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines. "How did he die?" "concrete poisoning?" 😂
I have never seen you say anything about the The Cannonball Run movies:)
I only ever see the sequel available on streaming... Not sure I've ever seen the original Cannon Ball run streaming anywhere in the past few years.
Finally universal monster movies been waiting for so long ❤
Copper and zinc stops gray hair. Also Battana oil. Please do the the research. You will see.
On our very first date, late in the evening, I snuggled up on a sofa with a pretty girl and watched "Koyaanisqatsi". That was 20 years ago and we've been inseparable ever since. Cause and effect? Who's to say.
I must be so much different than everybody else the black atom with the rock was one of the first DC or marvel movies that I've enjoyed in a while!!
I honestly believe that Children of Men is one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made. So underrated, despite all the star power in its cast! It's also got a character quite unlike any other I've seen from Michael Caine!
Applies to US only - these films are not available in the UK.
Running Scared is an absolute must see, probably my favorite mob movie, I put ahead of Casino and Goodfellas
Just saying
Agree: fantastic
Ty
Outstanding, thank you.
You bet!
I wish I could find a catalog of all films by streamer service.
As Above So Below is one of my favorites. If you haven't seen it and love horror films this is a much watch.
👍 thanks again!! :)
Damn, how was was Wonder Woman 1984? I have heard nothing but bad things about it.
Red Eye is WAAAAAY underrated. A basic, fun, thriller.
My favorite chanel on RUclips right here.
Please put which Prime Video Region you are talking about in the title. Checked The Batman, Watchmen, Red Dawn, Tucker & Dale vs Evil and Army of darkness and neither are availebel in my region
Love the channel!
The grey suits you 🙂
Black Adam wasn't great but worth a watch. Compare it to Shazam: Fury of the Gods or the Flash, BA was much palatable than the latter DC films. It made more action and it had Hawkman and Dr. Fate! Let's not forget Henry Cavill's Superman!
We enjoyed BA. Fun action movie with good actors.
