The watercolors community has a similar theme of buying out old tubes of paint that was discontinued. Lots of tears after Quinacridone Gold pigment (and other variants) (PO49 amd PO48), and Permanent Alizarin Crimson (PR206).
I even suspect the reason is the same: big clients of pigment manufacturers (car paints etc.) stopped using that pigment.

    • @luvhair255

It's fair. Though it wasn't until recently that everyone and their mom could comment or observe the dramas themselves. Up until about 2015ish, I remember some very calm, supportive parts of the niche communities around where damamongers were simply gatekept out. But some people simply make drama for content, some specific breed of toxicity that festered or untreated mental illness. You can't really go anywhere to get away from drama except small friend circles and cut off from anyone at your own home. I hope the fountain pen communities are doing alright, but I'm sure there's someone somewhere calling another person bigoted for not liking a certain pen or calling someone a slur 😅

Hiiii Pinely!! OMG I am so suprised to see drama from MY COMMUNITY here! I appreciate that you went over this with a "I don't get it, but I know why you're mad" sort of tone. For us, inks are SO important with colors. I own so many shades of pink and blue which my family cannot tell the difference between, but I NOTICE! And I'm the one that has to use it for an ENTIRE BOTTLE. (Note that for most pens, 50ml like the Lamy Dark Lilac can go for 20-30 pen refills!) There are so many different colors out there, that if I don't find one that I'm in love with, why would I use it? And if I find one I love, and you sell it again after NOT doing so for almost a decade, but it's a FRAUD, a SHAM!? Yeah, it blew up. This was like if McDonald's changed the Big Mac but still sold it as a Big Mac.
All this to say, thank you for addressing this with a level of respect to our nonsense! (Also, while $100 may seem like a lot of money for ink, I have 3 different pens all worth over $200 each, and some go for MUCH more than that. So yeah. Niche hobbies get a bit wild sometimes.)

Oh wow, drama that actually applies to one of my interests 😅. I think I even _own_ some original dark lilac cartridges because I bought the original special edition pen and it came with them... I used 1 and not the others since I don't like cartridges and didn't vibe with the ink as much as I thought I would (and the lamy safari isn't a pen I use anymore)... If I can find them I might donate them to another fountain pen enthusiast who actually wants that colour 😅. I can empathise though, one of my favourite inks ever - and one I use a LOT in my art - is kwz sheen machine, I'd be as devastated if it was discontinued then came back but wasn't the same 😭. There are other sheening inks in similar colours but none of them even come close to the crazy amount of sheen from sheen machine, and diluted/in areas where it's not saturated to the point of sheening it's the most gorgeous slightly turquoise leaning blue 😍

I actually bought myself two LAMY pens this winter because I find fountain pens to be very nice and more sustainable than most plastic disposable pens, but they are indeed an investment lmao. Fountain pens are excellent for writing in cursive, which I tend to do most of the time, and I also find them good for ink drawings! Plus I got my name on it and I like that shit :)
