For me the most charming detail of this, other than Miss Ross's delightful raspiness and her playful diction, is the way she CATCHES the falling earring! It falls into the crook of her mic arm, she releases and catches it in the other hand, and uses it to beat against her hip like a tambourine. Now THAT, ladies and gents, is showmanship.

When music was music, these girls could sing led by the great Diana Ross. Back in the 60's they had hit after hit, my favorite is " MY WORLD IS EMPTY WITHOUT YOU". The Ed Sullivan show was where many singers, groups and comedians got their start.

I totally agree. They look great and they sing amazing!!
But I must ask, why do you think that there is something wrong with dressing like a hooker? Does it make you less of a person if you sell sex? Men and women that sell sex are not second class citizens. We as a society have failed if that is the choice they feel that they have to make to survive.
Unless it is a profession they have chosen because they like it.

I was a teenager then, 14 in 66. Do the math!!! I loved the Supremes. They were great live. I hope you enjoy them. This was so good I bought the single. Back in the day we bought singles! They are wearing sequins which are still worn today but were very popular in the 60s. My mom had several items made of them. Mics are overhead usually. Try this one, it will blow your socks off ruclips.net/video/UmtvkBTTU2o/видео.html or this version ruclips.net/video/bpL1TTxffO0/видео.html This is I hear A Symphony which I think is, for me, is their best song. Mary Wilson's sexy alto filler voice & Florence Ballard's soulful soprano voice sound so great.. in those days they had what they call boom mics above the singers on live shows sometimes.. Miss Wilson gave the BEST concerts on her own. Between The 1960s & 1970s, Mary Wilson with all the several Supremes had 23 million selling singles & 50 singles that made the Music charts.. Check out & react on some of Mary Wilson's 70s Supremes hits or her solo.. also Florence Ballard.. Rest In Heaven Our Lady Mary,, Lady SUPREME Mary Wilson & The Soulful Supreme Florence Ballard.. When Diana's head gets ta boppin, you KNOW it's gonna be a stellar performance. They look and sound amazing here, also check out "The Happening" also from Ed Sullivan, that performance is electrifying. Mary and Flo most time perform with a "boom mic" which is above their heads right out of camera shot. If you ever watch old episodes of the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Johnny has a mic on his desk, and all his guests don't have one... they use a boom mic above thier heads. BTW.. those sequins they are wearing are called "fish scale" sequins.

Dereck..... Diana was VERY AWARE that her earring came off. Go back and watch and REALLY WATCH and you will see that the earring falls off and hits her dress and she quickly swoops up the earring with her left hand holds it until the end of the song. Then she throws the earring quickly to the floor before she starts the second song. (which is not seen in this shortened video).

If you look closely, you can see that when her earring falls, she catches it with her left hand and holds it in her hand until the end of this song. While she is bowing, I look closely and you can see that she throws it off stage. She’s a very remarkable person. She caught the earring without even looking down. She reached in front of her body, caught the earring while staring in the camera and not missing a beat. No one can do that. I highly recommend that when you listen to a great record, like this one, did you listen to it all the way through as you are missing part of the greatness which is the way to record builds. You’ve heard this record before because it’s a classic. It’s known internationally around the world this very day.

I was 12 - when the Supremes WERE supreme! Contextually having lived this era in real-time it’s important to understand that the Beatles then were already huge, that in life, as a teenager there were only two pathways for individualising your teenage musical identity ie The Beach Boys and the Brit Invasion pop rock OR Motown and both Black and Blue-Eyed Soul. I chose Motown specifically because of the Supremes and more specifically this song! My pathway to a lifetime soundtrack of hopes and dreams was this very track. A12 year old kid chose Motown and the rest is - life !

I would LOVE for you to react to the POST Diana Supremes, especially The Supremes of the 70's with Jean Terrell replacing Diana Ross! They went ON to have more HOT hits, and recordings even tho' they stopped getting the 'attention' from the Record Company and suppoprt to VAUNT them, they were NO LESS "SUPREME" and Much Worthy of international acclaim and attention just as the originals were. And Mary Wilson carried them on until the disband in 1077, when she then went solo! Please, if you will, look into some of their things, starting with "Up The Ladder To The Roof" , "Stoned Love", and hopefully, my favorite, "Bad Weather". There were Many More in between too, such as "Floy Joy" which featured a duet with Mary Wilson! Thanks, C.J.

They had an overhead mike. Florence didn't feel well enough to make the session so Berry Gordy pulled Marlene Barrow from the background group, The Andantes, to fill in for her on the song. After discovering that no one noticed the difference, Berry decided to use The Andantes on later songs by the group to fill in for Mary and Florence or Cindy when they were on tour and he could only afford to fly Diana in for the session. Please also check out their appearance on Ed Sullivan singing "The Happening", which was Florence's last TV appearance with the group.

It is WELL documented Ms Diana Ross was HARD WORK to say the least. Basically she has always been a difficult demanding Diva so Mary Wilson & Florence Ballard ultimately became background singers. Such is show business. There is always one singer pushed to the front (Beyonce as an example). As much Diana is a great and talented singer, i wouldn't like to try get her autograph in the airport. She's one of those celebs who thinks she is a cut above the rest. Her daughter Rhonda is adorable.

Live singing. What a concept. This when it was still an actual group. You can here the background and real harmony before the Ross takeover

The mic was probably the one they have on crane that's above them out of camera shot, it was controlled by a man sitting on the end directing it being very careful not to be seen, I'm sure he had head phones so the control booth could direct him and communicate

The gowns they are wearing are between 3 to 5 thousand dollars each. You could by a new car for 2500 dollars.

This song was written for The Supremes by Holland Dozier Holland. Mary Wilson & Florence Ballard were not the voices that sang the songs in the studio. They were for visual effects until Barry Gordy realized that they could sing also.

All three Supremes sang on this record that singing with the Andantes didn’t happen until Florence left the group

Supremes and other acts utilized what's known as a BOOM MIC while performing on the Sullivan show. Boom mic is what is used while filming television shows and movies, suspended above the shot. You almost caught it - apparently you didn't see Diana CATCH the earring when it fell off her hear! Haha Holland Dozier Holland, Motown's in house song writers
