After 2 guesses, I had "A" and "E" locked in, with "L" out of position.
I have encountered this result so many times, I can practically recite the possible (and previous) answers in my sleep.
After a strategic 3rd guess (BEFOG), only 2 choices remained: FLAKE and FLAME (already used)
