ASKERNISH GOLF CLUB - THE LOST GOLF COURSE -Hidden Gems, Series 2, Episode 9

- I visited the holy grail of golf courses - Askernish Golf club on south Uist in the outer Hebrides.
In June 1891 "Old" Tom Morris accompanied by his companion Horace Hutchinson travelled to South Uist at the request of the landowners to inspect the machair lands with a view to laying out a new course. "Old" Tom eventually laid out eighteen holes on the rolling dunes of Askernish Farm, although he declared that the choice of links land available was "staggering." Horace mentioned the trip in a magazine called "Golf", the forerunner of "Golf Illustrated", for which he was to contribute over the next thirty years.
The pair continued their journey, moving north to Stornoway to inspect a new course which had been completed the year before.
During its early years the course would have been used to entice visitors to the island, as a form of sport to be enjoyed along with the traditional persuits of fishing and shooting. We know from Frederick Rea's book "A School in South Uist" that some of the residents were regular players but these would have been mostly confined to the local clergy, doctors and teachers. It was maintained by local farm workers using scythes - they were also seconded as caddies for the visiting gentry.
Askernish farm was adopted into crofting tenure in 1922 and a lack of consistent maintenance led to the course's general decline until Scottish and Northern Airways started a regular air service from Renfrew to Askernish in 1936.

What's your favourite Old Tom morris course?
Is this the most natural beautiful course ever?
#golfmates comment below ⬇️
It's been a dream of mine, since I was a teenage boy, to play a course that "Old Tom Morris" designed and played! Being disabled, and not able to fly, I get to watch you play these amazing courses!
Thank you, Liam and Smiling Lee, for showing us these hidden gems! You put a huge smile on my face today!!
Natural courses just bring out your natural talent ol’ mate!!
If only the roads were gravel, it would be perfect! Scotland's on the bucket list, this is on the bucket list of bucket lists.
What a spectacular course.
What a course -looks great. My fav old Tom course is Cruden Bay.
Blessed to play here many times including this year . It seeps into your bones and your head and you do not want to walk off the 18 th. Driving away ,all you can think about is returning . It is absolutely unique and that’s its gift . No golfing enthusiast can say they understand golf until they play here . Staggering holes include the 4 th , 8 th , 9 th 10 th ,11 th , 12 th plus 14 to 16 th . The 7 th is the greatest , truest golf hole I have ever played . Old Tom Morris is the most important figure in the history of the game , and this is his masterpiece . Do not miss the experience .
What a wonderful experience it would be to play an original, untouched Old Tom Morris course. I'd love to have a go at Askernish with my "Hickories". Close your eyes and transport yourself back a hundred years. Golf as it should be played !
What a place and what a history lesson. Magic!!
Played this in the 1970s. Greens were fenced to keep the sheep off and a local rule was if you hit the fence on the way to the green, you could have another go, but if through the green and hit the fence, play it as it lies( with relief if fence impeded swing). Wonderful!
Oh to live in your country. To have the chance to play these old links and see the history of golf. I envy you folks a lot. They truly are gems of golf courses. Well done Old Tom Morris!!
Absolutely
What a course , and what made it better liams enthusiasm, it’s contagious he just makes you want to play well
Thank you
A very special tug on me ol' heart strings there, Liam. About 99% of my DNA comes from just that area. Thanks for the share, mate!
Thank you
Just the most spectacular scenery and natural challenge. Always a joy to be there as well as benefitting from a Hebridean Spa (wind and rain)! Watch out for the rabbit holes!
Had the great pleasure of playing this course this Summer. Wow! Wow! & wow! Such a stunner, I can’t wait to return.
Played this remarkable course in September 2023. Alone on the course with 35mph wind and horizontal rain to contend with. I initially regretted starting the round due to the weather conditions but by the time I reached the 3rd, I didn't want the round to finish. Probably lost about 10 balls and found 6. It's still great value at £60 a round.
It’s a magical place
I look for courses in the Maryland, Pennsylvania area that have the same look and feel to what I think Scottish courses are like. They are typically designed and built by farmers that have converted their land and use the natural layout on fairways and greens. Rough around the edges, at first they look easy but are demanding. I can walk most of them for $25 US. Beautiful rolling hills with deer, orchards, cattle and eagles. I always encourage my friends to support these courses and not the perfectly manicured, outrageously expensive Pro feel courses. Liam, love your stuff! keep it up.
One thing I can say mate, is that you're never lost for words.
TRUE
Wow… I’ve never heard of this (being in the States) and this is simply stunning. To play this with the rich history it has would most certainly be a dream come true and for me personally, I’d rank this opportunity right up there with playing the Old Course (which is on my bucket list to do some day)! Another one for my “dream bucket list” and thank you Liam for bringing this and it’s history to the rest of the world! Absolutely awesome… 👍👍
Thank you scott
We stayed in the last cottage on the right at the top of the road, just before the main road about 10 years ago and I played this course three times in the most brutal winds imaginable. I remember hitting a driver on one of the little par-3s over a big ditch and just about reached the green.😂 I always tell everybody about this course and most the time they don’t believe me😂
Stunning day in Scotland.
Absolutely
My brothers and I are planning a trip with our dad for his 75th birthday in July to Scotland to watch a round of the open in St Andrews and travel around the country to play a few courses, and part of our trip plan is to golf Askernish and I can’t wait, watching this has me so excited to get there!
Just stunning Liam. An Old Tom masterpiece.
Thank you
Absolutely amazing that a course like that still exists.. now on my bucket list.. thanks for sharing
Thank you
Loved that Liam! Old Tom Morris was the man indeed.....my family (Mum's side, my great uncles etc.) were all members at Old Prestwick & the old boys loved to talk about him as having been the greenkeeper back in the day! Love the history of the game, as much as love playing! Great video....keep up the good work fella!
Spent 2 years living on Benbecula and played the course as a member. I'll never forget the place, It's brutal on windy summers day when the rough is up. Members are unique, and very friendly, expect a ribbing it your English (me Bolton Lad). Expect to share your round with cows in the winter as it's also crofting land (bone of contention). If you get chance play it, you'll remember the experience forever.
I play an Old Tom Morris course at Tain GC. So as a fan had to go to Askernish.
Have never had so much fun on a golf course on my own. Would go back in a heartbeat.
Played it with my son about 28 years ago. So impressed with what they've done and so happy they've kept it real. Most of our fun was working out where the fairways were! Great fun for a fiver in an honesty box at that time.
They've done brilliant work
These courses have a unique beauty that the most expensive and lavish courses can never match. The fact that the average person can play them is a privilege. Thanks for showing us.
Great place, great respect... thanks Liam for taking us to such wonderful authentic places
I'd play it in a heartbeat. We've got an Old Tom Morris design nearby - an inland links, and I love playing it.
Absolutely
Make me so proud 🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴
A terrific course and your enthusiasm, Liam, makes you feel desperate to play it. Definitely a hidden gem. Thanks Liam.
Thank you
Another masterpiece. I would absolutely play this course if I ever get to far north UK, simply because it is an original. Love originals. Thanks for this great video.
Thank you
That course is truly heaven on earth!!
Absolutely
I envy Liam Harrison. To be able to live the life of golf and playing courses all over the world and have class friends and beautiful family. Count your blessings my friend.
Had the privilege of playing there two weeks ago. Absolutely the best days golf I could ever wish to experience. Even the loss of a ball in the middle of a fairway down a rabbit hole made me smile. Thanks for the video brought it all back.
Thank you
What a place!! Nice to see a mention of my mate Conor Walsh, wasn't expecting that on a course vlog.
Golf in its purest form, absolutely stunning. Would love to see more courses set up like this for the pros to play especially those beautiful greens
Glad enjoyed
What a gem of a course Liam
Most definitely a bucket list course. I have an English coin from Old Tom Morris's birth year 1821 I use as a ball marker. If I ever get to return to the mother land I would play the course with my hickories, I think it would only be fitting. Great video Liam.
Absolutely
Almost a decade ago i went from Canada & played the Old Course and a week later played Askernish. Favourite was definitely the latter (though the old course was magic), & I shot at least a dozen more at Askernish. She’s tough
She is
That was quality, Tom Morris is a legend
Absolutely
Just think, what a difficult job old Tom must have had keeping up with a golf course in his day! Thanks for the great look into what it was like to play an old Tom Morris course Liam! Great fun! ⛳
Thank you
Yes I would definitely play this course without a shadow of a doubt
You are one fortunate man. Thanks for bringing us along. Appreciate it. 😊
Thank you
Wow! That is about as raw as a course can get! Golf in its infancy, and so pure! Thanks for this gem!!
It is that
My absolute favourite course!! The scenery is unbelievable!! Very very special place
Thank you
As always....well done Liam....nobody does it better.
I love this course Liam, pure natural layout using natures natural curves, brilliant mate 👍🏌️
Thank you
Utterly magical - top of my list -awesome original golf
Thank you
Purest Links Golf and a nice little dram of standard glenfiddich on the last hole. Liam knows how and where this game is played.
GMF Done ..................... BEAUTIFUL
Those greens 🙈 great hidden gem 👍 Thanks 🏌🏾♂️
🇨🇦 THANKS YOU. A true treasure for golf.
Thank you
We all have our own opinion, but for a true natural lynx golf course, and all what goes with it.i do wonder why people give a thumbs down, wake up and smell the beautiful fresh crisp air.
All my love
Nick
Thank you
This was an editorial masterpiece. Wow!
Thank you
Liam that course is stunning & will blow anyone's mind. I hope Smiler got to play some holes as well.
The joy in your voice says it all pal. Loved it😀😀😀👍
Thank you
I played Tain GC in August, some of the fairways are mounded like an elephants graveyard, 11 of the original 15 greens (Old Tom could only find 15 suitable green sites so that was what he built.) still in play today, what a track.
Fantastic
What a great course beautiful
It is
Oh yes. Beautiful place
Canadians won't admit it, BUT, they TOO, are part of North America. My Fellow Americans! Great video! Thank you Liam and Lee!
👍
Unbelievable golf in its purest form love it 👍🏌️♂️🔥💥
Simply gorgeous golf course. Would love to play it. Nice golf play Liam. Golfer no more nongolfer nonsense. Believe it.
Learned about the top dressing from your green maintenance vlog. Didn't know the rest. The course no words. Like you said a golf course designed by God. The ultimate designer
Absolutely
Liam, mate et al, I've been watching your Hidden Gem Series, and honestly, these are the courses I'd like to play on my Bucket List, no matter I'm a mid-high handicapper; thanks for bringing this to the golfers outside og the UK, every country should have a crew like yours, advertising those un known little gems which everyone wants to play. Respect mate, to you nad your crew. I am in Australia North Queensland, and courses are several 100 km's apart. Appreciate your work and that of your team. Good stuff....
Thank you 🙏
Great video. Smashing it with the hidden gems this year!
Thank you
Wow wow wow!! That looks amazing.
It would be a dream come true to play that course and toast old Tom with you and the smiler!

A salute to ole Tom Morris! What a course and yes you were on fire! Great video Liam!!
Thank you
Amazing.
Genius - love this. Worth the views alone. Placed on bucket list.
What stunning views and the course looks outstanding your a very lucky man playing such gems
Beautiful! Golf as it was intended!
An Old Tom Morris golf course with natural beauty
Absolutely so true
What a stunning place Liam I salute you and smiley Lee for bringing it to us all. You played some great golf there too. Respect to you and keep the hidden gems coming 👌👍
Thank you
A golden rule of links golf is that the less soil moved to create the course the better it is. Golf in its purest form plays through, around and over the natural terrain. Add a little wind and weather and you have perfection!
Absolutely
Well done Liam, that was bloody brilliant!
What a treat to play golf in the truly original format. Half your luck Liam.
Thank you
That was absolutely the coolest course ive ever seen. Thanks
Thank you
What an absolute gem........Nice 1
Cheers andy
What I love about the course is how the natural shape of the dunes have been used to create the holes. When you look down the fairway, everything is framing the hole and encouraging you to hit the target. Lovely course.
Also, really well edited video and very interesting history of the course.
Thank you
Staggeringly beautiful!
Absolutely
Thanks for this. Amazing.
Great to watch you play so well with that new draw. Fantastic course if you’re a good golfer, a nightmare if you’re not. Take plenty of balls and enjoy the moment
Absolutely true
Beautiful course Liam, thanks for the tour!
absolutely fabulous
Now that's a course that looks a joy to play
Absolutely
Wow, what amazing course, love the way they have kept it true
Brilliant course. That might be the first stop on a golf tour. Love it.
Absolutely
What a gorgeous looking place!
Thank you
Thank you so much for showing this historical marvel. I've read quite a bit about Old Tom but never dreamed I'd have the chance to see one of his originals. You've done a great service to those of us who study the history of the game.☺☺
Thank you
My Favorite OTM golf course I have played= Muirfield---- Great history and clubhouse art of captains of the past
Thansk for watching
Stunning course what a place Liam, well played
What a magnificent course ..just Wow .

Stunning old course , what golf is all about 👌👌
Simply put - WOW. Thank you Liam.
Very welcome
I’d play there any day!!
So glad you'r featuring Askernish! Used to live in the Uists and Askernish was a favourite. Watch out for cow pats! Next stop has to be Benbecula Station. Maybe see you there! Cheers
Thank you
I've played the station at Benbecula, when stationed there in the military. Loved the Outer Hebrides, use to visit every year.
@@Rob-on5tz Went to Benbecula for a "temporary" teaching post which lasted 16 and a half years! Only left when my wife's mother (in Aberdeen) became ill. Loved Benbecula Station! Hope to go back someday. Cheers, Jim L
One of your best videos...thank you
