My neighbor of 105 years had a GE Porta Cool that ran for over 35 years. The son got a new one, and they bought an LG. It died before the neighbor died, and the son died before this one. I got the LG after they got the property. It blown up. I found the PortaCool in the shed. It is cold. It's running, and every time I run, I can smell the neighbors odors.
Ran one for months no complaint. Would wake many mornings to a motel cool feel. Only sold it 18 years ago cause got a 12k btu unit for a bigger place moved to.
I have almost the same unit as that Hotpoint, the only difference is mine has a power saver switch under the two control knobs. Mine has a manufacture date of 1984. I stopped using it because it has a tendency to freeze up solid overnight. I'm thinking it's either something simple like a clogged up coil restricting air flow or something more serious like it's low on freon. I think I paid $25 for it at an auction back around 1990.
I don't like carry cools. They dehumidify really well, but the airflow is just terrible. I loaned one out to someone who had a larger apartment, and the little 4,000 BTU unit cooled the whole apartment, but he only kept it like 75 degrees. I like to keep my rooms like a meat locker, I generally just turn them down as low as they will go which is usually around 60 degrees. None of the carry cools I have seen will do that though, they just ice up too easy, and then when they thaw out they drip water everywhere. I would like to find an original one with the single knob as part of the collection, but as functional air conditioners, I find them quite terrible.
I have a ge carry cool with the plastic shell, I also have a HotPoint portacool with the metal backing, I believe it’s an older model and the evaporator discharge grille can tilt, it’s also got a magnet to hold the front grill against, which is nice and doesn’t rattle. Hopefully someone can give me more info on it.

Nasty!
Two very good units.
In my opinion, that style of ACs was the best idea ever. I have a carry kool I found in the garbage 14 years ago and still have it. I love them.
The plastic GE units were some of the best!

Yes i remember we had one and it cooled everything now
I miss seeing these everywhere
My father has a unit very much like the second unit. Only difference was it was an early to mid 80s model,

My first one was a 4000 btu carry cool I was around 4 years old and it managed to freeze my room my parents bought it new in the 70s
