This channel is an addition to my existing Flickr page for photos of Vintage AC Units. This channel is for videos of units mainly from my own personal collection. i intend on getting a running video showing front, back, sides, controls, features, etc of every unit i acquire. it may take a bit for me to get to some of the larger ones, but all in good time. photos are available on my Flickr page: www.flickr.com/photos/66034464@N08/
If anyone has questions about old ACs please feel free to contact me. i will be more than happy to answer any questions i can. also, any feedback on videos is much appreciated.

One of the merchants at the Sweetwater Flea Market had a GE green box fan hanging in the area for ventilation in about 1991. I was fascinated. I like old box fans. The old box fans that do come with reverse mode, I never saw the point. The fan blades are arched so the air moves better with the blades spinning in one direction. Also, the fan can easily be turned around by hand.
@@Sammy2012ify for looks i prefer to not turn them around, especially if mounted permanently. As for practicality, you are absolutely right. Blade will move more air going the right direction. Still a neat extra feature.
@ To each their own I guess. The reversible box fans are long discontinued anyway except for the twin window fans that can be used as either a table fan or window fan.
Here in Kansas City we had about 10" over two weeks ago.....most that we have had in a while. Also only above freezing for 2 or 3 days since so most of it is still on the ground. I agree that it may as well snow since it will be cold anyway.

That's way more than we got here, I only got about 50 mm. Was just enough to make a good coating over everything, looking very nice under the HPS street lights. That is a beautiful tree in the front yard, I remember admiring it at the AC meet. If you want to keep it long-term, I would consider getting it cabled up. Maple trees are not the strongest variety and can drop branches over time, especially when the branches split low to the ground like that. I have a twin trunk (which is the worst case scenario for stability) Swamp Maple in the back that hangs over my deck. It's probably just a matter of time before it falls on the deck, but I like it too much to cut it down. The shade and beauty it provides is exceptional. I had it cabled together last year and I feel a little better about it now.
@@JordanU thats not a bad idea at all! About your deck, if that should ever happen, you got a nice insurance claim

@@TheAirConditionerGuy I Knew It! "Chill Master" you is...
This is an advantage pure water has over mixtures, like soda. Those substances will freeze, sometimes breaking or deforming the container, and causing leaks when the product thaws. Also, water is one of only a few substances that expand when going from the liquid to the solid state; most others contract.
That is a very nice example. This will date back to the late 60s. These were only sold for a few years, which makes the number of these still around quite impressive. I'm surprised it's in good balance, none of the ones I have or have worked on are. I will keep an eye out for the electrically reversible variant. If I find one, it's yours. A few things to note about these: 1) The cords tend to fray right where it goes into the fan. If it's still good all the way through, remove the strain relief, move it up an inch on the cord, and put it back. Good as new. 2) These motors are of an extremely obscure design (it's a GE, what a surprise). There is an oil well in the back of the motor that provides oil for the 1 bearing the motor has (yes, 1 bearing and 1 bearing only). After 50+ years, it's in desperate need of refilling. There was no intention of these fans ever being serviced or lubricated whatsoever, there's no oil port and the motor cannot be disassembled through any reasonable means. I am aware of procedures to crack into these motors as well as add an oil port. 3) Highly recommend re-varnishing the motor. The windings are known to come loose from the laminations over time and vibrate. The sound is annoying and the movement will eventually result in a burn out condition. 4) The motors have no protection I'm aware of. There's a chance it may be impedance protected, but certainly not thermal. These motors don't have the best reputation for longevity either. Would not recommend operation unattended. I'd be happy to give this a good servicing if you bring it along next time you're at my place. I also have an original paper copy of the instruction manual for these which is an interesting read.
@@JordanU that is all excellent advice!! I would gladly bring that fan along next time i visit. I have that Penncrest that I can service and use for now. Interesting that these were built in a relatively low quality (for the day) standard. You are right tho, GE was designed by some mad scientists.
@@TheAirConditionerGuy Despite being seemingly indestructible on the outside, and (probably unintentionally) lasting a long time, these were throw-away fans at the time which is crazy to think about. The motor was built so cheaply I think these used aluminium windings instead of copper.
@@JordanU thats crazy! Especially for the time. Thats probably why theres so many around, they sold a lot. Im wondering if theres not an upgrade that can be done? Idk if it would be cost effective or not though.
50k is a lot of heat for that room! Looks like the bolt above the register isn't screwed on.. I think we need to fit some ceiling fans in that garage this summer.

It's supercooling. The water is going below the freezing point without freezing because it's undisturbed and doesn't find a point to crystallize at. By you picking up the bottle, it's disturbing the water molecules which causes them to rapidly crystallize and freeze.
@@andrewg593 thanks! Just the type of answer i was looking for
This effect is known as superchilling, because the water is pure, there are no nucleation sites for ice crystals to form, once the bottle is jostled, this causes a chain reaction where the water temperature raises to 32 degrees during the freezing process. This same effect can be seen with sodium acetate.
@@evanchapmanfanman interesting! This is the type of answer i was hoping for
It happens in my work truck in the winter all the time, a brand new water bottle is liquid but it's 25° out as soon as I pop the cap it freezes, must have something to do with letting oxygen in the molecules do some weird thing and freeze. I don't know.
Im glad its not only me lol shits crazy tho! It amuses me 😂😂

Love the automatic louvers and it sounds great too! I hope to find a vintage window unit in my area one day. Down in the south you’d think they’d be more common but I’ve been looking for years and haven’t found anything yet.
@@Evan420 i spent a year in Vero Beach between 2004 and 2005. I found very few vintage units. I check street view from time to time and all but 1 that i knew of are gone
@ I check the windows too and I never see anything except newer units. Never any interesting grilles either, just condenser fins. I saw one vintage unit in an estate sale listing but it was permanently mounted in the wall and it was pretty far away. I’m gonna keep looking though!
Interesting video! I owned the 1969 version of this fan: white with plastic blades, but plenty of air-moving power. Another great fan I had was a 1978 Hunter model. The low speed on that one was so low that you could hardly hear it. Great for sleeping!
Just want to say thank you for your videos as I have been watching for a while. I am an old man and as a kid I also always noticed air conditioners and any kind of fan. I grew up in southern Oklahoma and only the more affluent could afford to have an air conditioner in their house or car. We had a huge 48" attic fan that ran at slow speed which worked great. It was mounted into the wall of the stairwell at the top of the stairs in the 1920's house. Grade school had mostly cheap metal box fans that the PTA donated to the classrooms. In junior high one teacher had a Vornado pedestal fan and another had a Westinghouse pedestal fan. When my grandma passed away I inherited here Welch hassock fan and also a Mathis all wooden box fan. Later, when I got a paper route I bought a slightly used York window unit for my bedroom. I was actually more interested in how it worked than I was in having an air conditioned room. I used it a few times then resold it. A neighbor had a Frigidaire AC unit mounted in the wall that I noticed had two compressors and I have never seem another. My first car in 1970 was a 61 thunderbird that had factory AC. What a luxury that was. The car cost me $225. At 70 years old I am still interested in old AC units and I do have a small collection of fans, mainly GE from the 20 to the 1960s. Keep up the videos as they are all interesting to us AC-fan nerds.

I have 5.5kW of high-end computers running in my basement for mining cryptocurrency (I believe you've seen it yourself, Russ). That room gets to about 90F and heats the floors of my first floor. I leave my central heating system fan set to "on" to distribute the heat to my whole house. And it works for me only because of my $.039/kWh electric rate. We have no gas service in my neighborhood. 2006 Trane 5-ton heatpump (410a) only runs on the coldest nights or when its really windy. Point is...don''t overlook the benefit of a warm basement. Excellent information! Also, where can I find a grill for this design because I have one from 1971 and I’m looking for a front grill for it.
That’s surprising! I never expected an EQK from that time to actually have an a compressor, I would’ve thought it would’ve had an AB compressor like the older GM Frigidaires of this capacity had. Amazing unit and it runs super well. I’m also surprised that AJ is a single cylinder compressor and not a twin cylinder like some other models would have. @@TheAirConditionerGuy When I bought my house it had forced air oil heat. When the A/C died, I had it swapped with a heat pump and the oil furnace set as the backup heat. After the oil tank went empty, I never refilled it. That was twelve years ago! Oil heat is very warm, but very expensive, and my heat pump works great even into the 20s. That is a neat box fan. Too bad they don’t make good box fans anymore. I bet the fan blows more air when it’s blowing from the back(the side with the blade hub visible). The blades look like they are arched as if the fan was designed to spin in that direction. Therefore, the fan probably blows more air from that side.
@@Sammy2012ify im sure it does, I cant tell by feeling it with my hands, however blade design is everything and im sure it does make a difference. Your point makes perfect sense. The positive i suppose would be a better exhaust system.
