I think the assumption more comes from that the meat substitutes which you can find in grocery stores usually are either tofu or seitan based. So when most people in the west think about tofu they probably dont imagine the traditional "bean cheese" but instead ground beef substitute which tastes like meat sauce without the meat.

This is probably the best video I've seen of an athlete trying a vegan diet. Very honest and direct, not full of trash or "ehhh it's okay but it's not like real meat" after every bite. And also the best cooking from an athlete I've seen. Normally, gym rats struggle with boiling pasta. Great video, thanks for giving a vegan diet an honest chance. For what it's worth, I've been vegan for 10 years now. Before I started, j was barely 95lbs and I couldn't squat or bench the empty barbell. Now I'm over 200lbs fairly lean and just hit a 190kg squat PR. Being a vegan athelete is totally possible. I meet people everyday who are unhealthy and not vegan, but want to tell me that a vegan diet is bad lol. I like the summation at the end - many diets can be healthy or unhealthy.

The calorie difference is mostly the peanut butter and ice cream, and the protein difference is mainly just I use a little more protein powder in my oats and tofu has more than falafel but I could see myself eating that exact day of eating.

For those who claim it's too expensive to eat vegan, two of my stapes are PBJ's and beans & tortillas - peasant food.
It's often recommended to use fake meats more as transitional foods, while someone is finding more whole foods that work for them. It's really not that hard. I've also read that daily recommended intake of fiber is actually set quite lower than it should be because people on standard American diet can't even hit that number, apparently it should be 50+g of fiber.
    Awesome video as usual!

You love beans, tofu, tempeh (even less processed than tofu), and lentils. I do use a pea protein (Vivo Life) in either breakfast or dessert. That Trader Joe's coconut, chocolate, non-dairy stuff slaps. But usually I just blend up frozen fruit with my protein powder (which is flavored) and soy milk. Good for you adding ground flaxseed! Great video idea. This is what people actually need. For example a thing like tofu is commonly used in japan and nobody there talks about if it's vegan or not. People around the world have plenty of vegan foods without thinking if they're vegan - they're just common foods that are available depending on the season. And the availability of meat can vary. Oatmilk products are also great in coffee, I prefer them over regular milk. And the local lebanese restaurant makes better falafel burgers than the other places's beef burgers, 15 euros with tzatziki and salad and freshly squeezed juice from actual fruits. Too bad it's tough to get nearly as good falafel for home. But if you want variety for your fries, sweet potato is always nice. My favourite breakfast is definitely oatmeal with strawberry jam and different seeds. And a spoonful of peanut butter. Whole-grain products are also great for protein. Bread, pasta, rice.
If I was to first drop meat products from my diet, I would have to do basically nothing myself. Meat is such a minor part of the daily diet (although I do enjoy dinner foods with meat). What's personally problematic is not being able to eat beans and getting rid of milk products, because milk products on the other hand are fairly decent amount of my diet and especially an important protein source, being both cheap and rich in protein. And the amount of veggies to eat for the calories would be painful for my digestion issues (a bit limited on what veggies I can eat, but pear is great in terms of calorie density and taste). Some vegan products do have high calories, but on the other hand they're often full of fat and low on protein. So you might want to keep tabs on that fat intake if you like ready vegan food products. Besides avocado, a ton of your fresh veggies are usually next to no fat and low calorie. But high on fibre. One consideration about the enjoyability is if you live up in the north where you have a short summer i.e. growing season, so you don't get fresh veggies or great variety of them that much. But in that case you're still likely to live in a decently wealthy country with good store availability in import. It's not nearly as good as fresh growing season products and the prices climb up in the winter, but at least you can get them so you don't have to for example suffer from deficiencies (even if you're not a vegan, eat your vegetables as Omar Isuf says. And the god damn fruits, they're amazing if you check what's in season).
Btw chefs DO suggest to throw the pasta in the sauce for a bit so it can absorb the sauce in the little crevices. You in fact showed nice little tips and tricks.

Vegan for years and this is spot on, although the Chick’n Pesto burgers have like 21g of protein for about 140 calories, ingredient list is awesome too - that being said the Gardeins you picked up are awesome as well, just much lower protein.
If you wanted to bump the protein numbers a bit on dinner - add cooked red lentils or especially tempeh to the pasta sauce. I do a tempeh bolognese all the time. Tempeh would bump up that protein number a solid 20g, it’s the closest thing to plain ol chicken breast in terms of macros, but it has lots of fiber and is fermented so it’s good for the gut. Add a few tablespoons of nutritional yeast as well and you could kick it up even higher - or just put it directly on the pasta.

Except he clearly doesn't understand that he isn't getting those macro's post digestion. The bioavailability of the foods he ate, in the aggregate, don't exceed 60%. That means he only actually was able to absorb 60% of the nutrition he took in that day. The fiber content of the food he ate strips out and inhibits nutrient absorption as well so there's loss from that. Just right off the top he can cut 50g from his total protein intake. It's no wonder that as you progress longer and longer on a vegan diet that you have to eat more and more just to maintain what muscle you have and that as you get beyond the 6 year mark (where most people abandon veganism) that your body begins to waste away from the starvation you are putting it through.

And when it's done add in the veggies and top it off to steam them with the little water that remains with the pasta for 3-5 min. This is how a lot of chinese food places cook their veggies and I think it's the best way (tastes better/fresher and preserves more nutrients in the veggies). Great video. Recently came to the US and I realized I can't digest the A1 protein milk here and had to avoid milk products. So I am eager to try fake meats as a vegetarian. Kinda liked it but the calorie distribution was kinda putting. So I started to look at other cultures for inspiration.
I don't want to offend anyone here, but as a South Indian, it's pretty easy to turn vegan. Daily diet consists of rice, sambar(lentil soup), palya(vegetable salad with a bit of oil tempering), dosa ( Indian crepe), idli (rice cake), chapati (wheat bread), chutney (uses coconut mainly), upma (rava or semolina), etc. Lentils help with protein intake, coconut oil helps with fats, and a good mix of vegetables for the sambar helps with micronutrients. I have relatives who don't eat rice but everything to avoid high-carb intake. A few staples like ghee (clarified butter) and yogurt might be a few to let go of. But soy yogurt is a usable alternative and ghee can be phased out slowly. I use hebbar's kitchen for reference mostly.

It's not just protein, but you're missing out on essential amino acids and vitamins and minerals that are only found in meat. Then there's the bioavailability question that's never answered in combination with stripping of nutrients from the excessive fiber intake. You're losing so much to the fiber and poor digestibility of the "food" you are eating. Just cut out 40% of the nutrition whatever you ate that day because that's how shit plant foods are digested.

@@frankchen4229 So you're just incapable of doing a google search for the things I stated and now I have to be your teacher....fine...
      B12
      Creatine
      Carnosine
      D3
      DHA
      Heme Iron
      Taurine
      EPA
      Carnitine
      Vitamin A (Retinol)
      Vitamin K2 (MK4)
The above is a list of amino acids, vitamins and minerals only found in meat. Understand that Vitamin A is not the same in meat as found in plants and that Heme Iron is very much different from iron derived from plants as well. You can do the work and learn about those differences yourself.
As for fiber...when you intake fiber as apart of your diet, know that there are differing types of fiber that the body has the ability to digest and doesn't. We call this soluble (digestible) and insoluble (indigestible). In order to digest these fibers we would require a functioning cecum like rumen animals (cows, sheep, etc.) where those fibers would be fermented and the carbohydrates extracted.
What fermentation is conducted in our gut is only able to replenish the microbes in our gut needed to break down these fibers in the paltry amounts that we can handle. Otherwise we do not derive nutrition from fiber at all. It is simply used to create bulk in our stool. Bulk that is entirely pointless. As a side effect we also create gas which causes bloating.
When we intake fiber, what is able to be broken down in the stomach is, while the rest is passed on to the intestines. In the intestines, fiber creates a physical barrier between cholesterol in the body that is attempting to bind to fat soluble vitamins and minerals so that they can be then carried to the intestinal wall and transported throughout the body.
When scientific studies say "fiber lowers cholesterol" they are entirely correct. But because your average person and even doctors don't understand the function of cholesterol beyond "HDL good, LDL bad" a lot of people believe that eating fiber and lowering cholesterol is a good thing, when in fact, it is not.
Cholesterol literally makes up every single cell in our body. Our brain is entirely made up of cholesterol. We build muscle not just because of protein but because of hormones our body produces from cholesterol. It is a building block as well as a nutrient transporter. Eliminating cholesterol from your diet is a bad thing.
The amount of nutrient loss from fiber intake is unique to each individual but suffice it to say, when you lower your cholesterol through fiber intake, that cholesterol is essentially getting caught up in the fiber like a net and being carried out of the body...along with all of the other nutrients that the cholesterol has bound to to transfer to the intestinal wall.
Bioavailability is how digestible and absorbable certain nutrients are in specific foods. So if a food is 50% bioavailable, that means whatever you ate, you were only able to actually absorb and utilize 50% of the nutrition within that food.
Understand that meat of any kind does not have a bioavailability score below 90 (out of 100) and that the absolute best case for plant foods never gets above 80 and that's only reserved for highly processed protein powders. On average most plants have a 60% or lower bioavailability.
Bioavailability also is typically used to assess the protein digestibility, so the figures do change somewhat depending on the source but not by much.
So when Alan is stating he got "x" amount of protein from his food that day, know that he probably only got about 60% of that value at best overall. And no, there are no current apps which factor in the bioavailability of foods into their calculators.

No, you made the claims so YOU have to back them up as part of the intellectual honesty protocol as practice; the request for your elaboration was to account for information may not have apparently been accounted for in your rationale. Also, "google search" results aren't so simple because a lot of surface level information might not account for nuances that will render them misleading, revolving back to my former point. But remaining intellectually honest by asking and scouting for what you think you know instead of asking for your rationale before assuming it means I want you to "be my teacher". 🤣🤣🤣🤡 Try to touch some grass. Anyway, onto the subject matter.
B12 - this is the only one in this list that is remotely valid but too many items are fortified with it; the consumption of them ailing deficiencies + the fact that many farm animals' diets are fortified with b12 automatically means this one isn't even that strong of a case.
      Creatine - not essential.
      Carnosine - non essential
D3 - non essential; made from the sun
DHA - non essential; easily made from ALA and not even devoid in a plant based diet because it's found literally in seaweed and other algae
Heme Iron - non essential; derived from non heme Iron which is readily absorbable in the presence of vit C
Taurine - non essential (Jesus fk)
EPA - non essential; also derived from ALA
      Carnitine - non essential
Retinol - non essential; easily derived from beta carotene
MK4 - non essential; easily derived from K1; MK7 (sourced from natto) is more bioavailable anyway so....
You literally parroted the EXACT SAME LIST in THE EXACT SAME ORDER from the EXACT SAME INTERNET MEME omfl....
You claimed these are essential when literally OVER HALF your list states they are non essential.
Also, cholesterol is secreted from your liver so you DONT NEED DIETARY CHOLESTEROL; you cannot immediately conclude a given compound must be sourced from diet if it is required for some bodily function.
Fiber is meant for your feeding your gut microbiome that secretes compounds into your bloodstream vital to your physiology, including immune and endocrine systems. It's also what facilitates regular bowel movement.
So you can define bioavailability, but you cannot define "essential". But that's to be expected, because you're larping as some well-informed academic - hence, why you got mad at me for practicing intellectual honesty, unlike you, who just assumes and parrots whatever popular, cucksumerist internet opinion is trendy instead of simply asking for rationale to cover knowledge blind spots. 🤓🤡

@@frankchen4229 "You literally parroted the EXACT SAME LIST in THE EXACT SAME ORDER from the EXACT SAME INTERNET MEME omfl..." - Because it was an easy copy/paste instead of having to write out every single damn line. I'll go point by point to show you your ass because it's clear you don't know anything.
Creatine is essential, it's so essential that you cannot build muscle without it. It is highly important in brain function which is apparently something you lack. So maybe up your creatine intake.
Carnosine is neuroprotective and helps the body mitigate oxidative stress from sugar intake. Individuals low in carnosine have a greater chance of developing cataracts. Diabetics are also shown to be low in carnosine.
D3 is essential for those who live above the equator and do not have access to sunlight due to overcast and bad weather 6+ months out of the year. It is also primarily used in the formation of bone cells as well as the absorption of calcium in the gut. Without D3 you could not absorb calcium or create new bone. It is highly essential and plays an important role in muscle building.
DHA and ALA are not the same. You think they are because you don't know any better. This is like my point about Vitamin A and beta carotene. These things are not the same.
The conversion rate of ALA to DHA and EPA is only a paltry 5% at best of what is taken in. Relying on ALA is a fools choice.
Alpha-Linoleic acid is cancerous. "Contrary to the initial studies suggesting that CLA is anti-carcinogenic, some studies have shown that CLA has no effect on tumor inhibition, and a few have even shown that CLA promotes tumor progression." - Conjugated Linoleic Acid Effects on Cancer, Obesity, and Atherosclerosis: A Review of Pre-Clinical and Human Trials with Current Perspectives
Non-heme iron is absorbed for shit in the human body. Heme iron is essential to maintain body temperature, proper metabolism, hormone secretion, and circadian rhythm. 95% of the blood cells in your body are made from heme iron. Many plants, if not all of them, contain phytates which block the uptake of heme iron in the body. Due to the nature of the PH levels in our body, non-heme iron is often not absorbable and thus insoluble. Meaning even if you intake inorganic iron from a potato, due to the PH levels in your stomach, it's simply evacuated and not absorbed because it cannot be broken down by the body.
Taurine is essential to maintain healthy liver and heart function as deficiencies in Taurine lead to liver damage and heart disease. It is also neuroprotective as it can cross the blood brain barrier and affects neurotransmission and membrane stabilization.
"Carnitine mediates the transport of medium/long-chain fatty acids across mitochondrial membranes, facilitating their oxidation with subsequent energy production; in addition, it facilitates the transport of intermediate toxic compounds out of the mitochondria preventing their accumulation. Because of these key functions, carnitine is concentrated in tissues that utilize fatty acids as their primary dietary fuel, such as skeletal and cardiac (heart) muscle."
Carnitine is "conditionally essential," meaning if you have sufficient levels in your body you do not need to intake any extra as your body produces a set amount regardless, but as we know, most people are deficient in various vitamins and minerals due to their poor dietary choices. It also transports fatty acids into the mitochondria and acts as a cofactor for fatty acid oxidation which can aid in weight loss.
Beta carotene, like non-heme iron, ALA and all of these other plant alternatives is poorly absorbed and poorly converted into essential amino acids and vitamins by the body. You're literally feeding yourself inferior materials and claiming it has the same outcome as the superior ones. They do not.
Retinol derived from animal meat is 75% to 100% absorbed by the body. Beta carotene is 3% to 90% absorbed by the body and is highly dependent on preparation methods used. "Micellar retinol absorption efficiency was around 30% in 1 h, but less than 5% for micellar provitamin A carotenoids. This may be explained by the presence of an efficient specific transporter for retinol, whereas provitamin A carotenoids are absorbed via non-specific transporters" - Absorption of Vitamin A and Carotenoids by the Enterocyte: Focus on Transport Proteins
Retinol and beta carotene are NOT the same. Stop making these false declarations that shitty plant derived nutrients are at all the same or better than those found in meat and organs. They are not.
And now onto the biggest blunder of your post, B12...Look, pal, unlike you, I'm an actual farmer. Cows are NOT supplemented B12. They are supplemented Cobalt (cobalamin) and only in certain circumstances. By and large cattle do not get ANY degree of supplementation. They naturally produce B12 through their natural digestive process and microbes in their gut, cobalamin is absorbed by the cattle’s small intestines and bioconcentrated in their livers. Cattle are supplemented "blue blocks" very very very rarely.
The B12 you get from algae is not bioactive. We do not have the ability to utilize the b12 (cobalamin) that plants contain. It must be converted by animals into Methylcobalamin otherwise we cannot utilize it. That vegan brain fog is very real due to b12 deficiencies. I'll say it again...these things you think are the same, are not. Plant derived nutrients are not identical to animal derived ones and are inferior. Unless you're eating freshly shit on soil as apart of your vegan diet, you are not getting bioactive B12.
"Fiber is meant for your feeding your gut microbiome that secretes compounds into your bloodstream vital to your physiology, including immune and endocrine systems. It's also what facilitates regular bowel movement."
No. Understand that your entire digestive system is lined with muscles which churn and move and flex. Fiber is entirely unnecessary in the movement of waste material in the body. Fat actually lubricates the intestinal walls allowing for smooth evacuations which is why if you have too much dietary fat in a set time frame you get diarrhea like symptoms. Meanwhile, fiber does not actually do anything for your stool other can create bulk and gas due to fermentation. Gas which forcefully expands the intestines which irritates them. What is the outcome of too little fiber in your diet? Normal bowel function? And what happens when you have too much fiber? It can literally create a fatal blockage in your gut.
In every instance of bowel problems like IBS, Crohn's or other bowel diseases, doctors always prescribe low fiber or fiber elimination diets. Why? If fiber was essential for "regular bowel movements" as you claim then why with patients who have bowel diseases like Diverticulitis, do doctors advise their patients to cease consuming fiber to heal their damaged bowels as a solution to their problem and not an increase in fiber intake?
"Also, cholesterol is secreted from your liver so you DONT NEED DIETARY CHOLESTEROL; you cannot immediately conclude a given compound must be sourced from diet if it is required for some bodily function."
Do you know what cholesterolemia is? Do you know what causes it? Do you know how to prevent it? Wanna know why a lot of vegans have ED? Are depressed? Can't think clearly?
This is a fitness channel and yet you're going to sit there and type absolute bullshit like "you don't need dietary cholesterol." If you want to build muscle efficiently, you need dietary cholesterol. The cholesterol that is produced by your body is for MAINTENANCE. It is to maintain the current state of your body. If you suddenly stopped consuming any source of cholesterol, eventually, just by taking a shit every day, you would deplete your stores of cholesterol on your body and you would cease creating it. Your body creates a certain amount of cholesterol from the fat cells on its body. This is a war of attrition. Without dietary cholesterol intake your body will quickly burn through the reserves it's built up over the years and you will wither away and die.
Do you understand what a bulk and cut phase actually do biologically or do you think that just putting on pounds and then removing them somehow makes you bigger? In a bulk phase you add on fat mass. During your cut phase you remove fat mass. The cut phase tells the body to release the nutrients stored in fat cells to aid in greater muscle growth. Your cholesterol levels INCREASE in a cut phase because of all that fat you've stored up is now being accessed and used to create hormones necessary for growth. Protein is merely 1 part of a multipart equation and the fact that you think that you do not need dietary cholesterol is just retarded.
      You NEED dietary cholesterol.
I'll stop here because this is becoming a fucking essay at this point. Go actually educate yourself and stop wasting my time. I know that research is hard and the studies take time to read and you have to actually exercise your brain to understand a lot of this nutrition and biology, but trust me, you'll be a lot better off if you stop being a useless tool and do the work yourself. All of the information I've posted is easily sourced if you just take the time and put in the effort. I won't be responding further to your nonsense.
