  • This video is my review of the TTArtisan AF 56mm f/1.8. I've had the lens for the last few months and this video is my experience using it.
    One slight correction, I may have overstated the corner sharpness a little. I recorded this video after using the lens in the field, where it performed wonderfully, as you can see. However, when I made the direct comparisons with Fujifilm's flagship, the differences were starker than I thought from day-to-day use. See the video for these side-by-side images.

      Thank you for watching! It's an interesting lens, for sure. This is what makes the budget lenses interesting for me... they offer something different to the "perfect" lenses we can buy at a much higher price.

    Beautiful shots. Just recently got the 35mm 1.8, but I’m definitely considering this one to add to my bag.

    Thank you for the informative review! I have the Sigma 56, but find myself interested in this lens and Viltrox’s latest 56 offering released earlier this month for the X-mount. I don’t need the redundancy. Admittedly, I love the character in the images the 27mm produces when using the XS-10! Looking forward to a future 56 lens comparison video 🎉

      Thanks! The Sigma 56mm is the one I'm still trying to get my hands on for the comparison... I'll give it a week or so but otherwise, I'll be doing the video without it!

      That's the reason I'll definitely keep it around! I'm lucky enough to work with the absolute beast that is the XF 56mm f/1.2 on a daily basis, but sometimes I want something a little messier. This is it for me!

    Hi Dylan, thanks again for this review ! Since I already own three Fuji lenses in this focal range (including a GF110 bought for half the retail price in Kyoto !), I won’t be too tempted to get my hands on this one. But I always come for your sample images and the final slideshow, and this one feels especially humbling for me since I was also visiting Japan a few weeks ago and that I don’t think that any of the pictures I brought back with me stands the comparison with yours. I still have a long way to go!

    I'm always happy about every new video you release. Thank you very much Dylan, for your honest opinion, interesting reviews and wonderful photographs, for which I look at your reviews very often. I noticed that you used the Fuji X-H2s, I'm very interested in your opinion of this camera and how it compares with the X-T5. I ask this question because I have XH2s, but sometimes I look towards H2/T5.. is it worth adding one of these 40MP cameras or is H2s enough for photography? I don't take videos, only photos. Thanks again Dylan, God bless you.

      Thanks for watching, as always! I appreciate your time and comments. I'm using the H2s because of the resolution... I'll share my thoughts on it coming up, but honestly, I didn't want 40MP for my work, so I ended up going with the H2s bodies.

    Thanks Dylan again for an excellent review! I have considered adding Fuji's 56mm to my 33mm lens (which I love) but was bothered by the focusing noise it makes. I find it really distracting, as you mentioned takes you out of the moment. I guess my question is, what types of photos do you take with the 33mm vs. the 56mm? Is there a major reason to use one over the other for the type of photographs you take? Which, by they way, are always amazing. Thank you!

      Thanks again for watching! It's always a pleasure to see a comment from you, Tom! For me, if I have the space, it's all about "compression", field of view, and that lovely bokeh from the 56mm. But, this focal length really takes you a good distance from most subjects. When it comes to wanting a bit more of an intimate feel and wanting a little more background, the 33mm is my choice. I've gone over this a little in my video about my family kit and also my recent video on the three GF lenses, but perhaps it's something I can try to dig deeper into?

    Hi Dylan. Thanks for an exelent review as always.
    Just got an example of this lens. Strangely it makes strange noises, when just walking around with it, due to Auto Exposure trying to adjust the apperture alle the time. If I focus, shut the camera off, or put it in full manual, it stops immediately? Did you have similar issues?

    • @DylanGoldbyPhotographer
      @DylanGoldbyPhotographer  29 дней назад +1

      I can't say I've ever noticed this. I don't ever work in full auto, so it would never have been something that I come across. I think that might be a common thread with lenses that reverse engineer Fujifilm's protocol.

    Great review, may I ask :
    What do you think is the better focal length for portraits 50mm or 56? Would it make sense to get rid of the fuji 50mm f2 and get the Ttartisans 56mm ?

    • @DylanGoldbyPhotographer
      @DylanGoldbyPhotographer  2 месяца назад +3

      I'm not a fan of labeling a lens as being "good" for a particular thing. The 56mm will give you a tighter field of view, slightly shallower depth of field, and a slightly longer working distance. If those would contribute to the way you like to photograph people, then possibly it would be a better choice.

    TTArtisan still hasn't improved their flare resistance or is it by design on all their lenses? Sometimes, it looks cool but most of the time, the veiling flare is just too much. I really like the TTArtisan lenses I've used so far except for the excessive veiling flare especially when shooting at night and there are strong light sources.

    • @DylanGoldbyPhotographer
      @DylanGoldbyPhotographer  2 месяца назад +1

      Honestly, I can't answer whether it's by design to hit a specific price point or what they're capable of technically. That's a question for their engineers. As you said, and as I said in the video, it can be gorgeous and it can be a little much. Personally, like with any lens, I'm willing to work within it to create the results I want and work around it when I need to, just like with any lens.

    Faster auto focus than the new 56 1.2 WR? 😳

    • @luciengrillet
      @luciengrillet 2 месяца назад

      Isn’t any auto focus faster than the 56 1.2 WR ? No that I don’t love the lens, but let’s be honest it’s almost impossible to use in a fast paced situation. I’ve read somewhere that Fuji was sticking to the DC motors on some of their fastest aperture lenses to be able to implement more focusing elements in the lens design. It would provide a smoother bokeh and some more refined transitions between in and out of focus areas, but the final product ends up being slower and noisier. I can attest that the GF55 1.7 has a similar behavior.

      @@luciengrillet
      Are you talking about the original 56 1.2? This indeed is a slower lens and I needed to use limit focus to make it acceptable.
      Later I did buy the WR version of the 56 1.2 and it is faster than the original, but not by much. I still use limit focus and it seems to be working great!
      Don’t have many misses!
