    I am absolutely petrified of flying to the point where getting on a plane feels like climbing in a coffin. It gives me extreme anxiety. These videos are helping me to put logic into my fears so I can better understand how things actually work so it doesn't scare me as much. Thank you!

    I experienced a single-engine landing aboard a flight to Hartford, Ct about 2 years ago. The aircraft was a MD-90, and the no. 1 engine had a compressor stall and had to be shut down. The Captain told us "Nothing to worry about, we've performed dozens of single engine landings on the simulator!" How comforting. Anyway, the landing was smooth and aside from the emergency vehicles surrounding us when we stopped, it was pretty uneventful. Interesting to see what might have transpired in the cockpit. Thanks for the upload!

    Very interesting watching you work besides your lectures. You call out every single switch you touch and move you make. Love the 360 format, it lets us see all your panels top to bottom. Wish we could digitally zoom in to see every setting and display. The video ends, we don't know if you made it or not. On a real flight, under what circumstances are you supposed to contact your company? Didn't happen here.

      A lot of these procedures are to prevent what caused the midlands air crash at East Midlands air crash in the late 80's. Ensuring that the correct engine is shut down, as once the engine is extinguished it cannot be re-lit.

    • @jimstanley_49
      @jimstanley_49 6 лет назад +2

      I think you mean after the individual engine's fire suppression system has fired it cannot be re-lit? Because an engine can certainly be restarted mid-flight unless it has been damaged.

    • @uzaiyaro
      @uzaiyaro 6 лет назад +1

      They confirmed there was no engine fire or overheat, as such the extinguishers would not have been released. I would like to know what did cause the failure, though.

      Indeed the resolution needed for any part of a 360 video to match that of a standard 4K video that included only that camera angle would probably approach like 16000x16000 px which while it might not sound that much higher the square relationship here is a bitch making it like 32 times the bitrate of 4K for the same quality. Doable sure but until 420 Mbps+ connections become the norm it's not going to happen as it would be impossible for most users to access.

    • @takyno
      @takyno 7 лет назад +1

      Alexander54843 everything is recorded by the CVR :D

    • @mscheese000
      @mscheese000 6 лет назад

      Cockpit crew CAN erase the CVR, but that can get them into big trouble especially if something happened on that flight that needed to be investigated.
      The CVR only keeps the last 30 minutes of audio anyway. It's on a continuous buffer. So as long as nothing happens, whatever conversation you had will soon be erased anyway. And if something DOES happen that leads to someone listening to it, you have probably died.

  • @cheburatorish

    Shouldn't max power be selected *immediately* upon recognition of the engine failure? That's actually the reason why to start the timer before the take off - so you can see when it's time to spool down to MCT. And at that moment you want to have as much energy as possible, so why not max power?

    • @MentourPilot
      @MentourPilot  6 лет назад

      Hi John. No, the timing is to keep track of how long the aircraft is allowed to maintain Takeoff thrust. The max (in our case) is 5 minutes, after which “Max continues thrust” have to be set. Max CON is, as the name suggest, the thrust which an engine is safe to run on continuously and can be both more and less than TO thrust based on how much de-rate that were used.

    • @cheburatorish
      @cheburatorish 6 лет назад

      Thanks for your quick reply, Mentour. Yes, that's what I meant, sorry if my message was unclear. Before the TO you start the timer in anticipation that you may need to reduce power after 5 minutes. I totally agree here. My question was why the max power was anticipated but never selected?

    • @cheburatorish
      @cheburatorish 6 лет назад

      Ah, Ok, I see now - it was already a max performance take off. This is almost never the case in the normal operation, where a reduced thrust procedure is normally applied. In that case, selecting max power would be absolutely necessary. So I wouldn't take my hand off the throttle until at safe altitude. Is my understanding correct?

  •  6 лет назад +1

    Hi Captain! I would like to ask you - why didn't you get the low pressure warning on the hydraulics panel from engine driven pump system B? Is that only a limitation of simulator or is it because the failed engine is windmilling? Thanks, S.

    • @MentourPilot

    • @stargazer7644
      @stargazer7644 5 лет назад

      At V1 the pilot flying takes his hand off of the throttle because they no longer have enough runway left to safely stop the plane, they are committed to taking off, so he releases the throttle. Just after that rotate is called and the pilot pulls back on the yoke, the plane rotates and takes to the air. Rotate is called at the calculated speed that the plane can leave the ground.

    Am I right in reckoning it would be about $40,000 to put together a decent simulator like this? About $20,000 for a 737 cockpit in decent condition, $10,000 or so I think for a nice hydraulic platform, and another $10,000 or so for the display, control systems, computers, and so on... :)

    • @seraphina985
      @seraphina985 6 лет назад

      Hardware wise you might be right, in truth by far the most expensive thing to develop for a flight simulator is the software. Just look at the design and development budget for even a typical triple A PC game title to get an idea what full 3D simulations cost to develop, that plus the relatively small market size for software of that nature means that most of the price of a full motion flight simulator is paying for the proprietary software.
      It's not like you could just grab an off the shelf PC flight sim and use the software from that even if they could handle the multiple screens most are not designed to handle the input from 1,000 switch sensors and such while managing anything like the number of mechanical servos that a real 737 has to physically move throttles, trim wheels, the control column etc to represent the autopilots inputs.

    I've been dying to ask you a question. With all your experience flying commercial airlines I was wondering if you were to strap in to a fighter jet like an American fighter jet it doesn't really matter which one would it take you as much training to fly it as somebody with absolutely no training flying an aircraft? I understand flying is your passion it's the career you've chosen but did you have any time ever wish to be a military pilot? I live next to a military base in America and I absolutely love to go outside and watch the Jets do Maneuvers and low flies. It just absolutely amazes me! A kid I went to school with ended up joining the military became a pilot and flew f 16s and after he retired started flying for Federal Express. I just love airplanes big or small

    • @stargazer7644
      @stargazer7644 5 лет назад +1

      A lot of a pilot's training is not learning to fly. It is learning to handle problems in your specific aircraft. So while the basics of flight would be the same in a jet fighter, the details of how the aircraft works, and the procedures would be different.

      Most modern airliners have 3 independent hydraulic systems some even have 4, the odds of all of them failing is very close to zero at least unless the aircraft is severely damaged particularly if the damage is concentrated near it's flight control surfaces. The latter is really unavoidable as to gain the redundancy of any one hydraulic system being sufficient all must contain an actuator on every flap, slat, aileron, rudder etc on the aircraft so there is a concentration of hydraulic lines near them which could be damaged if that entire section of the aircraft is critically damaged.
      Examples of this happening like the DHL cargo plane that managed to make an emergency landing in Baghdad using differential thrust alone are rare and that was during the Iraq war when DHL had the contract to deliver mail for the US military, the plane was struck by a man portable surface to air missile that destroyed much of the trailing edge of one wing and set it ablaze there are of course limited options to make airliners safe against something like this though. After all we are talking about a weapon that's entire purpose is to destroy aircraft they are rather effective at doing so as a result.

    There was a feeling during the non-normal checklist readout that the pilot monitoring has no idea what he is reading (he reads the checklist in a very "textbook"-like manner, without accentuating any part of the sentence). Is that intentional?

    • @MentourPilot
      @MentourPilot  6 лет назад

      More or less. In this instance he is trying to be as clear as possible for those who are watching. But it is read in a very clinical way to avoid misunderstandings.

    •  6 лет назад

      Acknowledged, thank you, I really appreciate it!
      It does spark a question then: what regulations and rules does one has to follow when reading/executing a non-normal checklist, and what difference is it to standard ones?

      tybo09 yup. For urgency.

    • @seraphina985
      @seraphina985 6 лет назад

      It is a signal of urgency used for situations which while serious enough to warrant the aircraft being given priority over all other aircraft (short of another aircraft calling in a mayday anyway) but not so serious that the aircraft is in immediate jeopardy. If there is a situation on board such that any delay would put the plane or anyone on board at risk but at this time there is no reason to believe the plane cannot execute a safe diversion to the nearest suitable airport and land normally a pan, pan, pan call would make more sense.
      Examples would be something like a single engine failure as the plane would be at elevated risk should the remaining engine fail so safer to be on the ground asap, or say a medical emergency on board where to maximise the patients chance of survival they should be transported to a primary care facility without delay but there is no danger to the aircraft itself or it's other occupants that sort of thing.

    Hello Mentour! Love the channel. I would like to know, can it pass that when I am on standyby I am 1hr 12mins from the airport? Because I live near Zgierz (POL) and would like to work for PLL LOT. I am 1hr 12mins from EPLL airport, and if it is good enough I can be at home for standby days, and if not than I would have to move.

    • @MentourPilot

      +Valter Costa True but this video was originally not meant to be used on RUclips. Trying to edit 360 video after they are finished is complicated.
      I get your view on the 360 but it's really the only way to properly give a feeling of how pilots interact with each other and the aircraft in real-time.

    • @valterc
      @valterc 7 лет назад

      Yes, I agree, it really serves that purpose, but it's just that with the quality of 360 video you cannot see (all) the details. It is a great video nonetheless. You probably already have, but take a look at some cockpit videos from justplanes or piloteye (there are many on youtube), they can give you some inspiration for future videos.

    i think scan flow starts from overhead so the first officer should have turned on the landing lights first then gone thru rest of the things,normally before arming autothrottle i first check the area in front of me by saying "checking flight path for significant weather traffic and obstical , all 3 clear autothrottle armed"I folloe this because incase in hurry if i bymistaklt press toga the aircraft might roll forward and we might not get full length

    While trying to digging out information from the handbook aircraft can crash gentlemen. Why don't you memorize the procedure at such an important subject of engine failure!

    • @greatflyer_aviation
      @greatflyer_aviation 5 лет назад

      Some non-normal checklists contain memory items which are done at or above 400ft RA which is very low over the ground. Non-critical situations, such as an engine failure with no fire, have no memory items, and the priority is to fly the airplane and climb to MSA.

    How do pilots decide when to declare a mayday or a pan-pan?

    • @Texassince1836
      @Texassince1836 5 лет назад

      Pretty much from what I've gathered Panpan is a situation that is far from ideal, but you are able to regain control and stabilize the aircraft to come in for a controlled landing.
      Mayday is of course an emergency where you cannot guarantee all of the above.

    • @stargazer7644
      @stargazer7644 5 лет назад

      It is determined by how much of the seat cushion has passed the pilot's sphincter. This is also known as pucker factor. Mayday is declared for immediate danger. Pan Pan is declared upon serious jeopardy, but no immediate danger. Losing one engine is generally not a huge problem and might be a Pan Pan. Losing both engines would be a Mayday.

    • @lwalker8785
      @lwalker8785 2 года назад

      My understanding is that pan-pan indicates a serious technical malfunction. Mayday indicates imminent danger to the aircraft.
