Very aptly timed video Tim as I’ve recently compared printing through PS on my Canon Pro300 with Canon’s own Professional Print & Layout software with a BIG difference (same settings, same paper etc.) I’ve struggled getting prints right with PS but all of a sudden the Canon software gives results comparable to what’s on screen! Cheers, Geoff.

I have made a similar conclusion printing to my Canon Pro-200 from Lightroom Classic through PPL as a Plug-in Extra. I like the results using PPL better than printing directly from LrC. I also find PPL easier to operate. These are just my preferences. Getting a good print that you like is the goal.

I also use PPL in my workflow and it seems to produce very accurate results (at least compared to how I'm viewing them on my screen).

Yup, PP&L feels like a dinosaur program in its look and at times clunkiness, but I use it and recommend it too. It does what you want it to, producing prints that look like how they do on the preview.

@@tomedenbrow7390 True, it could do with a bit of modernisation but what it does do it does well. 🙂

The prints in the bottom half of the screen look like they have contrast turned up to eleven, but as you move them up they match the others. Need to bear that in mind when showing us pictures.

Interesting comparison! It would have been great to firstly get a standard image wrangled through these bits of software, and include Epson/Canon's print layout in the mix as well... Thinking out loud some of the differences could be down to potentially double-profiling in the software, which you won't normally run into when using the OEM print layout software.

Fascinating Tim! In my own workflow I edit on a hardware calibrated monitor with Lightroom, and I print through Canon's own Print and Professional Layout software. I've always done this and considering the results are highly accurate I've never considered using anything else. Having just finished editing my own printing video comparing prints made on two of your new papers (PF Gloss 310, and PF Lustre 310), it is really difficult to show the differences in a video. Looking at them with your eye, it's easy to see the differences, but that seems to get lost a bit in video. So it's hard for me to tell which of those prints matches my edited file. But it is a very interesting topic for sure! I might have to do some of my own testing. :-)

Great video. Thank you. What's about Qimage?

I print on my Epson P700 using Epson Print layout. maybe another variable to factor in to this interesting discussion.

I think a more interesting and perhaps informative test would be to send the same, edited image to the printer as an 8 bit jpeg in sRGb and as a 16 bit TIFF in the largest colour space available, either ProPhoto or Adobe RGB. This should show if sending the printer a better file in a larger colour space prior to the CMYK conversion makes much of a difference. My suspicion is that it will make a difference but that difference will be more apparent in some prints. Perhaps there won't be much difference in a black and white but lots in a landscape with many subtle colours.

I like the results I get with Qimage / P700 although I must say that Qimage is not the most intuitive software I know. Was missing Qimage in this test but alas.

My guess is the reason you're getting variations in your printouts is because you're letting the software manage colors, rather the printer. I would think that if you were to print using the Epson Print Layout, your results would be comparable to the RIP software you were using. I would also assume that if you let the printer manage colors, your results would be identical across the board.
BTW, whatever happened to the Tuesday video edition?

would be interested on your experience with Qimage - I find that it does not apply the profile correctly when printing from Capture One - also I cannot invoke the Canon Professional Print and Layout directly from Capture One - it seems to reject any files that are processed.

I think I will stick to photoshop for printing. I find the page layout in Lightroom a nightmare and the sharpening is an issue for me. Thank for your cans of worms. I think Julian prints from the Canon software?

Hey Nicky! Nice to see you here, and yes, you are right, I use the native Canon software.
