I just love that you confess that you have killed plants (even though you are a landscape designer) and that you show your outtakes and bloopers. I’m so glad I found your channel, I’m new to elephant ear planting, I started gardening and enjoy doing it. Tho I haven’t really planted a lot yet but already planning on what to plant and how. I was searching for way’s to keep my bulb’s safe I didn’t put all my bulbs in the ground due to wanting to see how one bulb did. I also had a late start, this is why I kept two bulbs lol. Awesome, thanks! I wondered about storing in the pot itself. Especially for the running types it seems so much easier. Great info! Our problem with basement storage is that we use a wood burner, so it gets pretty warm down there.

I let one go through the first frost and had to cut some mushy stuff off of it. Wrapped it in newspaper and put it in a paper bag. Seemed fine when I planted it the following spring. It didn't come up. I took a shovel and dug it up...just a bunch of dust. It had turned into a ball of powder underneath the ground. I will always dig them up ahead of frosts from now on. P.S. It was only about 4 inches from the surface of the ground.

So why do you wrap the tubers in paper? I would think that putting them in a covered box without wrapping them would provide better air flow and less chance of rotting or disease. Thanks

One is a GIANT Fontanesii in a huge pot with stolons creeping over the edges- and I’m not sure how to handle that…. Also wondering if bulb/ bag storage is okay in the 40 degree range?? Very beautiful plants. I just tried to grow a Diamond head and Mojito Elephant ear the season that just past. They both was rooten bulbs I purchased. So disappointed. Any tips you can give me. Or sellers you can recommend? I live in zone 7 (PA).
Not related to EE, I planted rhubarb this summer. Lots of big leaves. Should I cut back for winter or let nature take its course. Also read you can eat rhubarb the first year, next summer is ok?
Julia can i let dry the elephant ears "the inside the house variety" they have thick stem, i let them be outdoors whole summer and plant them in bigger and bigger pot now it is one huge plant and cant fit the size inside my house anymore...not sure what to do with it....plz help!!!!
You can store them dormant in pots. Stop watering and let the leaves dry. Keep in a cool, dark and dry place. water once a month just a bit. Wake them up in late February - March with regular watering, bright and warm location
Maybe a cool spot in the house somewhere? I have oria thermometer with three wifi sensors and I check the spots in the house to see where the temps are just right.
I have tried to overwinter the black diamond head by cutting back the foliage after the frost and storing it in the basement. It did not work and the bulbs died. This year I am leaving them in the contained and not disturbing the plant. The larger green elephant ears seem much easier to store by taking out the corm and storing it similar to how you do it. My question is are some elephant ears different, the black diamond head EE's do not seem to have a corm like the larger more common green ones......just wondering why some are so easy to store and others more difficult.
I do this and do not water at all during the winter while they are in my basement; I bring them to a brightly lit room in April, and then start watering.

remove the leaves and stalks after it gets hit by frost. The common practice is to skip the first year so the plant bulks up.

4:27 elephant ears, i wish to dry them out in the pot and keep them indoor in darker room but heated about 6os F how often should i water it then?
