Keep a flame altar as a quick teleporter before entering a new zone or quest spot. That way if you die (or need to clear out your backpack, teleport home and), you can continue where you left off. You can place a work bench down next to it to make quick repairs. Deactivate the flame when you are done with the zone/quest and you'll be able to drop a new one after 30 seconds.

When are your mining materials. You get XP for that. You look on the left side you see the XP growing every time you keep hitting your axe pick ⛏️ on your materials. After you lose your stamina count to six. Then start hitting again. Keep doing this every single time and make sure you don't go above 6 seconds. And the XP keeps growing and growing. There are times I got 300 XP for every hit to get materials. Try it and see if it works for you. I've leveled up quickly. The deeper inside the mining areas the larger the XP will be, if you keep doing my suggestion.
I never build until max level. I repair and reuse a pre-existing POI early and mid game. The time saved lets you focus on leveling. Then, in the end, you have all or most of the building materials found/unlocked. I like the nicer looking endgame building mats. The red marble you find early but not a lot of it. By the time you are max level it is easy building with red marble.

The best way to make a basement or tunnel is to just build foundation and remove it again it will remove the area you build in
Or, you can scroll to the bottom, select Terrain, pick a shape, and right click on the area you want to remove without building any foundation.

As an English native speaker, I'd rather the shroud be called miasma. Because that's what it is.
