    TRK502X was just too heavy. I have snapped up a CRF300 Rally. It has heavier springs for 90+ kg rider, bar risers, fat bars & bash plate. Now to add 550 performance ECU, DNA air filter, Acerbis hand guards and rear rack. 😎

    I’m 5 feet 9 inches tall, 155pounds. Suspension is definitely soft, which is alright with me. Seat height is perfect, and the bike is extremely light. The power is to be expected for a 300cc engine, which for me is fine. I didn’t want to spend another $4000 to buy a 450 when I could get an Africa twin or tenere used for around the same price. My entire theory on buying a 300 was to use the $$ I would have spent on a larger displacement bike on quality gear and parts. If I want to upgrade, I’ll upgrade. I paid cash for the bike so I have no obligation but to have fun with it and keep it until my son is big enough to saddle the thing. By that time, I hope to be in a bigger bike.
    And the proven reliability of Honda speaks for itself. I’m an adult rider so I don’t intend on beating this bike to death, therefore if I have to sell it for whatever reason, it holds its value.

    I bought a RE Himalayan instead of a KLX300. I am a first time rider, older - age 49, and not seeking risky riding. I love the styling and so far it has been perfect. I do get that the KLX is a superior off road bike but I dont regret it - although I really have nothing to compare it to. Looking forward to your educated review!

    Good list. However, I noticed a lot of folks selling their "new" dual sports in the 250-300cc because they wanted to really go on and off road and didn't have that little extra speed/gear on the road or ummf off road when desired. When making my choice, I first eliminated all 2 strokes due to the maintenance required if going on road a lot. I then ruled out small bores becauese I wanted to buy once and not out grow something too quickly. The KTM 500 EXCF/Husky FE501S both offer more on the rode than the first 3 listed in the video. Also, the service intervals are not as bad as people make them out to be. They are also lighter than all 5 bikes, making them better off road. Of course they come with a premium. When I made my choice, I narrowed mine down to the Honda CRF300L or 1 of 2 big bores. I chose the bigger bore to be more road capable. So that narrowed it down to the Honda 450L or one of the KTM(ish) variants. I found the Husky 501S first so bought it. I will note, any of those 3 meant I'd need to spend money to address critical concerns for ridability. The 300 would need a suspension upgrade to ride off road and any big bore would require ECU/exhaust upgrades. Though I'm sure I'd be happy with a 300L for a while, I feel good about my decision. I just thought I'd add my view point/decidion making process in case it helps someone. What ever you chose. Have fun!

      i think your reasoning is very logical. i think the 300s are not worth it given the lack of punch for the price and neither is a new 650 air cooled big bore limited by a 5 gearbox. a used dr650 is best in terms of dirt and road capability i find when cost is a factor. when cost is not a factor, a new ktm and husqy are best. my thoughts...

      I bought the ktm used (like new with only 17 hours) for £5600 uk. I had more than that invested in the 300L with all the upgrades don't get me wrong the 300L is a cracking bike for its reliability and low maintenance and a good choice if your just out to have a gentle plod around the trails with other riders on similar powered machines and i would have probably stuck with the 300L but the lads I sometimes ride with are on CRF450, husqvarnas etc so I constantly felt like I'd taken the wife's handbag to a knife fight. Love my TDub, especially as a 5'6 rider. I put gold valves in the front fork and a stiffer spring in the back and it became a perfectly capable dirt bike. Also put a 55 tooth sprocket on the back since I don't ride tarmac much. Thing will climb anything.

    • @MotorcyclesOffroad
      @MotorcyclesOffroad  Год назад

      Being a former TW200 I will say the bike is a blast but, I would not recommend it for a new rider, I feel the XT is a better dual sport where the TW200 is in a league all of its own as a little tractor farm bike. One of the big problems I see with it is lack of tire selection, the brigstones where horrible in most conditions, I replaced the front with a shinko golden boy but the rear is just what it is as far as a dual sport tire. It was very washy even when I lowed the PSI down to 10-12. Next is it would have been the lowest horsepower bike on the entire list, ok for riding in a small town or village but top speed was probably 55-60mph with me on it. Also as far as maintenance it has a really only design, you have to take the left engine cover off to replace the sprocket and it still has a drum brake.

    • @givannimikel4586
      @givannimikel4586 Год назад +1

      @Motorcycles Offroad You made some valid points. If you want a highway capable bike the TDub isn't for you. As for the rear tire, the stiffer rear suspension makes it feel more planted and I air it down to 7 psi for rough trails. Mine is more of a trail bike at this point and I'm hoping to get a 300 Rally or Yamaha mini Tenere if they hurry up and make one.

If you mostly ride on the street with only rare times on trails then most of those bikes will be ok but they are too heavy for any serious trail work. You can ride them on mildly nasty trails but it will be a workout. If you plan on just riding roads out to the trails, one of the European bikes is a must have. Anyone wanna buy my WR250R?

    Seems my 2023 CRF300L is most enjoyable on pavement between 4 and 5 thousand RPM, meaning it’s mostly in 5th gear in 35 to 45 mph range. Thing is most roads from city to city in my State of Kentucky where I ride need a bike that will handle nicely in the 55-65 mph range and my 300 makes that an ordeal, it’s too light, too tall, and too sensitive to wind for comfort or confidence at those speeds so for the most part my rides are within my city. I don’t like this confinement so I will likely sell the 300 and get a CL500.

    • @MotorcyclesOffroad
      @MotorcyclesOffroad  Год назад +1

      Well yes the 250f does not at all fit my perimeters there is some huge problems when considering that bike to be a dual sport. One is well you have to out source a street legal title since it doesnt come with one stock now for some states in the US that is not that hard but for many people in other states or other countries that is a huge problem. (I make my videos also for an international audience, only 40% of my viewers is in the US) Next you have to mod the bike to make it street able, like turn signals all that. But lets say these things are not a problem for you, well the huge problem is the bike is a dirt bike overall, if you look in the service manual you have to change oil, oil filter, air filter, as well as inspect valve clearance, crank case breather, and spark plug every 600 miles. That is a lot of work on a dual sport and if you commute with the bike it would be every weekend or everyother. To put it in perspective the honda's oil is every 8,000 miles and valves every 16,000. Hope you find this information valuable.

      @@MotorcyclesOffroad . Definitely didn't realize the oil change parameters were that often. Just like the 450L which is one of many reasons I sold it. Interesting that the 450L and 250F have the same oil change parameters but otherwise have absolutely nothing in common. The motors are polar opposite. But, with that said, I still want the 250F and I'll use my Rally for dualsport and mini adventures. The 250F will just be a simple desert/woods bike.

    • @joey011582
      @joey011582 Год назад +1

      @MotorcyclesOffroad The fact is the KTM is 50 state street legal from the factory makes it a dual sport. Just because you don't think so is irrelevant. There are thousands of people who ride them across continents all over the world. Your title is misleading and biased. My opinion is your choice of dual sport is underpowered, overweight and more suited for fire, gravel and dirt roads. If anyone intends on doing any kind of moderate difficulty single track they will be hating life on either one of those bikes. Hell, even difficult doubles would be a problem and forget about a good hill climb lol. If people complain about maintenance intervals (oil changes and valve checks) they need to realize those are under competitive conditions and unlike the bikes you think are good dual sports are far from competitive racing machines lol. Go on a forum or watch a youtube video of guys talking about the KTM valve maintenance (most do one adjustment in 400-500 hrs of riding and people usually go 1,000 miles per oil change. Give me the lean mean machine any day of the week and you can keep the outdated pigs with lipstick. Hell, I'd put my street legal 2006 CRF250x against any one of those jokes haha.

The thing is the motorcycle still sits heavy for its displacement at 380lbs, its low front fender would give the sense its more of an ADV bike then a DS. But also correct me if I wrong but is the front tire still on only a 19" wheel?

    The Kawasaki and Honda are great fun bikes. They are not race bikes. They are less expensive and low maintenance. Good for mostly 2 lane highway or city streets plus the added off road fun. Nobody would enjoy these bikes on a freeway. Get a higher cc Adventure bike for that.

    Save some money and find a used WR250R in good shape. You'll actually have a dual sport motorcycle if you do.

    • @MotorcyclesOffroad
      @MotorcyclesOffroad  Год назад

      A Wr250r is definitely not worth the 5k people want to sell them for. The bike has no rear wheel torque and you have to rev it to the moon to get anything out of it. All the Dyno charts I have seen put it at 22 rear wheel hp and sub 15 lbs of torque and you have to rev it to 8,000 rpms just to get that. Not a great bike on technical rocks or climbs, I had the WR250 dirt bike model and it was a bit better but I prefer my plated KDX200 over both for sure if we are speaking strictly off-road capabilities.

      @@MotorcyclesOffroad Why? Simple, reliable, easily maintainable, fuel efficient, and Affordable all coupled with a low seat height because as we know new riders who can put both feet on the ground are more confident and lets be honest with the Average height of males being 5'9" in the US the CFR 300l and the KX300 sit at 35.2, Drz 400 sits just above 35. that leaves the Enfield the XT and the TW especially for beginners the best options for new riders of average or below average riders. I'd like to hear your opinions on why the TW is a bad option, Thanks for the reply.

      @Mayo Monkey so I sold my Tdubb last year and I still have the footage for the review. Maybe I will put it together finally because it is a great bike. I was already in another conversation on here about the same subject so I will post comment on here to so maybe you can see where I'm coming from.
      "Being a former TW200 I will say the bike is a blast but, I would not recommend it for a new rider, I feel the XT is a better dual sport where the TW200 is in a league all of its own as a little tractor farm bike. One of the big problems I see with it is lack of tire selection, the brigstones where horrible in most conditions, I replaced the front with a shinko golden boy but the rear is just what it is as far as a dual sport tire. It was very washy even when I lowed the PSI down to 10-12. Next is it would have been the lowest horsepower bike on the entire list from this video, ok for riding in a small town or village but top speed was probably 55-60mph with me on it. Also as far as maintenance it has a really odd design, you have to take the left engine cover off to replace the sprocket and it still has a drum brake.

      I'm 6'5" with a 36 inch inseam, I sat on a CRF300L, and it was nice. The knee bed is comfortable, not too high or anything.
      Most dual sports aren't too short for tall riders, usually too tall for short riders. Look through the spec lists for Seat Height and look for something comparable to a CRF300 or KLR650 would be my advice.
      I was daily riding a KLR650 before a pickup truck swerved into me and totaled my love, and plan to get one again. 6 gallons, 53mpg, and a geat seat height.
