@@AntonBrowne thanks, nope that's fine - with what i hear in your videos and what I imagine you hear and how carefully you apparently listen I'm sure you'd notice and comment were it overly noisy. I just ask as in one configuration (my favourite of course....) I'm getting more noise than I find acceptable but I think it's some kind of grounding issue. Oddly though other mics subbed into the same setup are fine. Anyway, thanks for the answer - wonderful how we can reach round the world and ask things directly ;)
@@AntonBrowne update : turns out earlier production models of Earthworks mics didn't work correctly with some transformer-coupled external preamps ie John Hardy etc. Don't ask me which, but after a particular serial number this issue was apparently remedied.
That was me that asked that =) Thanks Anton. I just couldn't do it man, I spent about a week thinking about it and looking for reasons why I don't need this microphone. I ran across someone else who did some recording of the self noise, and it turned me off it. 2400$ +tax it should have absolutely no flaws and the self noise was kind of up there. Hah, I convinced myself not to get it. Ended up getting a Lewitt 540 Subzero instead, think it cost me around $760 and it seems pretty flat with a slight brightness in the upper end. Self noise was 4db on that one. Still though the SV33 is by far the sexiest microphone I've ever seen, hands down. I did however end up also buying the Icon Pro from Earthworks.
I must admit, I'm not hot on self noise unless it's obvious as in my Sennheiser e965 hum. The modest desk I use is probably noisier than the mics and I mostly look at stage mics so it isn't such an issue. I am hoping to be able to look at some classic Neummans etc. and I bet they'll be noisier than many of the current mics.
@Anton Browne yeah, what's up with that? I was looking at Nuemans too, and they were so noisy. Some of them were 17db, and that's crazy for mics in the thousands of dollars range and being they're large diaphragm.
they sold one to me because of you and a preamp why should they ask you to send it back i think i’m not the only one who bought it because of your review! it stopped my search for a mic now i’m hunting for the perfect 🪕 and uke jesus it will never stop 🛑
i’m just back from a 6 day rehearsal up in the mountains i had the sv 33 with me with a battery driven akg phantompower device ,we had to walk with the stuff for the last 1/2 mile, so i didn’t want no extra weight for preamps etc. after 3 days i run out off batteries so i had to use another mic. now the „esoteric“ part happened!! the guys i was playing with , are complete „un-gadget“ people they don’t care for anything concerning equipment but they all noticed something was different one said: quote! do you turned on the mic today? the sv 33 does something very special & very different!! maybe not measurable (ask mr.brown) but it does!! and btw, i don’t have a endorsement contract with earthworks ⭐️
If earthworks asks for it back, I think you you should crowd fund a new one, I am in. Also Austrian audio I want you to "lend" the the OD 505 and OC 707 for a comparison test. I am in the market for one of those. I bought the Earthworks sr40v after listening to amongst others, your reviews.
Hi Anton, hope you're well. Quick q about the SV33, just for dialogue, VO etc, how did you find the self-noise?
I have found it fine - though I don't have high-end equipment to match the mic. The Earthworks Ethos is similar in many ways and costs a lot less!

Given that the SV33 is discontinued now... which mic would you go to instead? What's your second favourite mic?
I would use the SR314.
@@AntonBrowneRight option.

Is SV 33 good for vocal recordings.
Excellent.
It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the sE Electronics T2 :) Have a nice weekend!
