For best results on the red/cyan effect at 3:30, watch in HD at 60fps. I promise I didn't forget to edit in the red or the cyan frames. They're there. Also it will look more/less gray depending on the brightness of your screen. Try moving your mouse in front of the flashing colors. You'll get an interesting result! (thanks to +Ishank mahale for the suggestion.)
+Krone Nguyen I know, it doesn't even work to film it with your camera or phone because everything you see depends on frame rates of cameras, video, etc.
I know, her and vsauce. Though, i have noticed that i way rather watch a woman talking about this than some guy... Like the clarity of the voice, i guess
It is interest to think, red and green light make us see yellow, but actual yellow light (split from a prism for example) also stimulates our red and green cones the same way and makes us see yellow, so you can't actually tell whether you are "seeing" yellow or red and green light together (unless you can get close enough to make out individual pigment cells like in a screen). For example is a banana reflecting actual yellow light or red and green light together, you can't know unless you know what the actual pigments are in a banana.
Great video. If our eyes had receptors for more colors, then making LCD displays for computer monitors, TVs, and cell phones would be far more difficult. True yellow light is a different frequency of light, not a combination of the red frequency and green frequency. Fortunately for LCD manufacturers, our eyes can't tell the difference.
For those of us with high-refresh monitors (120Hz or 144Hz), try switching to 60Hz in your monitor's advanced settings for the red/cyan flashing part. It doesn't work too well at higher refresh rates for some reason.
has this ever happen to you... when it is sunny outside then you closed your eyes for a long time then you open them and everything looks blueish or tinted blue ..
It's really fun to play with the video settings at 3:30. At lower quality than 720p60, the screen appears red only, but higher definition shows the white effect. Similarly, if you slow down the footage to 0.25x, I can see the flashing red/cyan, but at 2x I only see the cyan colour. So cool!
One other fun thing I realized watching this video is that if instead of directly looking at the screen, you place it facing a wall and look at the reflection, it blends in much better. No idea why.
OMG I just tried it because I wasn't sure if I had it on low quality or high-quality but my guess was low b/c where we live is very country & we can't get super fast internet or fiber.. It was on low-quality so I manually changed it to the 720p60 and all of a sudden I was able to see the flashing colors and it looked white but at first, I could only see a red screen. I didn't speed it or slow it but I thought that was so cool & apparently, I'm missing out on a lot with my settings being on automatic LOL. That's awesome, thanks for sharing 🎉
I learnt this at school! Was very exciting! Loved it! Paint - Primary colors - RED, YELLOW AND BLUE Light - Pigments - Primary colors - BLUE, GREEN AND RED
FUN FACT (for those who didn't know) - The light has primary and secondary colors just like paint - PRIMARY COLORS - Red, Blue and Green SECONDARY COLORS - Cyan (Green + Blue) , Magenta (Red + Blue) , Yellow (Red + Blue)
Yeah it's fairly obvious from the entire bit about 'I'm going to flash these two colours back and forth extremely fast' she spends a minute on beforehand, haha. m
Slightly different. That had to do with how your eye perceived the lighting of the picture. It would adjust as it saw fit(you see the picture is deceiving because it has both really bright yellow areas and really dark purple areas) and the result would be messing with your perception of the color.
It's somewhat related. In a room lit by a slightly blue tinted lamp, your brain can contextually tell you what objects in that room are red or yellow or blue. Same goes for a room with a bulb that is tinted yellow, which is fairly common in any household. I'm looking at a rainbow-colored artwork on my wall right now by the light of a yellow lightbulb and I can easily identify all the colors, even when some would look less orange/yellow to me in the broad daylight. In that dress picture, you can't see the context. You don't know if the room is light or dark. Ergo, your brain can look at it either way.
Whatever you watched it on doesn't support 60FPS video. What she did is put red in one frame and cyan on the other. So if you watch in 30 frames, all the cyan frames are missed. Try a different browser.
At 3:30 It stayed red. I did some changes on the settings and found that it will switch between the two colors when I play the video at 720p60 or 1080p60. However, I only saw the red and cyan and did not see white. I downloaded the video at original resolution and played it on my computer. It looked like a medium gray rather than white.
Blue and Purple for me. And during the day if lighting changes, sometimes I feel like my lense flips... sort of like a camera that can change its lense setting and it typically happens when lighting dulls to a mood setting but not always.
+Physics Girl - additional color mixing fact... For people who are extremely nearsighted & wear corrective glasses, digitally reproduced colors can start to "separate". I don't tend to notice it with yellow, but if I look at digital purple anywhere but dead center of my glasses, it very clearly separates into red & blue. +Andrew Figueroa I'd say more than 0.001% of the population that watches RUclips plays CSGO semi-competitively. But, yah, RUclips can't do better than 60 fps.
+okBryan it works even if it flashes because of eye afterimage. also, if you're familiar with CRT monitors (you know, the big fat ones), you'd remeber 85hz is enough to end all flickering. but that's one image displayed 85 times a second, which means the "black" between frames is also displayed 85 times a second. So, since it's two image streams, to end all flickering, you'd need 85*2hz = 170hz. then again, the contrast is lower in this case than black vs white, so it probably needs a little bit less than that. it might look OK with "just" 120hz
From 4:13 to the end. That would explain why when I'm in the room where there's a lot of "yellow light" (like sunset or red walls) and I stay longer and when I go outside to white-gray room I always see blue light. That's weird, because none of my friends or family experiences that.
Thanks, Physics Girl.... As an artist, I knew that pigment is different than light. But.., your explanation gave me the "Why".... And that "Why" is truly remarkable.... Thanks, again.
Beyza0328 111 I wonder if this has to do with the speed capability of our graphics card/display. 1080 has to draw more pixels than 720, so it's harder for the display system to keep up. Both 1080 and 720 looks gray to me; probably because my system is slower than yours. Don't know...just a guess.
Guys I figured out how to get it to work! Just hold the screen farther away, first I saw red and then I tried to hold it farther away from my face and it worked, I saw a really really light blue
i always knew pigment vs light was different, but never actually knew why until now. it was a strange thing to learn, way back in middle school, though it was pretty cool. red green and blue vs red yellow and blue (or technically magenta, green, and cyan)
Thank you very much!!! It half-worked! xD I see more like a grey that is "winking" (if I can say that xD). But this is better than viewing an all red screen! ^^
3:30 this looks like from a Pokémon episode back from the 90s ,called Eletric Soldier Porigon, which caused many seizures to Japanese kids while watching that! If you're watching this part, WATCH AT YOU'RE OWN RISK!
Alessandro Correira that same warning can, I assume, be found on the black board of your English class. This will require a time machine...and twenty bucks. Time travel makes you incredibly thirsty, and you're going to need a smoke when it's over. So to recap: get me some beer and cigarettes from the store (my mother has cancer?), please. edit: sorry, mom. you don't really have cancer, btw. I mean, I assume. good god. if you did have cancer, you'd tell me...right? you'd tell me if you loved me. do you even love me, mom? truly? listen, I'm sorry about the fire. how many times do I have to say that?!? 2nd edit: does anyone have any information on multiple personality disorder and/or schizophrenia? for a friend.
The by far easiest way to learn how complimentary colors work is to use RGB values for five minutes. 255,255,255 is white, 0,0,0 is black, 150,150,150 is gray, 0,255,255 is cyan, 255,0,255 is yellow, and 255,255,0 is magenta. Since monitors (and computers) use only the three colors we have cones for, this leads to RGB being very intuitive after learning the basic concept of it.
+ODeathDragon To most people, computers are just magical black boxes :P you'd be amazed at how little the average user actually knows about what they're using.
+Tim Stahel (Moustached Viking) Although, red+green = yellow. and green + blue = magenta. But you were close in the color arrangement you listen. You got the green + blue = cyan correct, though!
+CPD XD101 the smallest displayed amount on youtube is $0.01 so i you said that there is per add, I think thare are more than 6 adds per 5.000 views lol
at 3:30 I saw static, white, blue, and red images flash very very fast. I don't know if there is something wrong with my eyes or if there's something wrong with me.
3:30 To the people who wonder why this is not working for them: If your video quality is lower than 720p60, this will not work because that is the minimum quality needed for the video to run at 60 FPS (the red and cyan colors flash at this framerate, so if you're at 480p, the video would only run at 30 FPS and you would only see one of the colors.)
I think It is because of what she was talking about at the end of the video where the white looks slightly blue because I saw it as grey at first but then I realised it was really light blue that looks grey due to the quick pulsing of red and green.
turn your brightness all the way up and the effect might be better. it does look like a grey blue colour but it's definitely not the cyan shown previously.
In graphic arts we refer to these differences as "transmitted" and "reflected" light. We scan to digital using transmitted light (red, green, blue) and print on a paper in reflective color (y,m,c,k).
This video is literally some girl just explaining physics in an easy to understand way to those who didn't learn this back at school for whatever reason. Eh, I can appreciate that.
or those 12-year-olds, such as myself, who are just curious about the world around them. I just want to learn science here dude... And I'm glad she's making these, it's surprisingly easy to understand.
3:25, it didn't work. Maybe it wasn't switching fast enough? I could see both colors, maybe I also saw some white, but it certainly didn't look anything like just a white screen. I also saw some longer red streaks along the bottom.
Not entirely true. It doubles the framerate of the video, but the monitor got a max of 60 FPS. I got a 144 Hz monitor, and it worked a lot better when i doubled the speed :)
It gets so much stranger with impossible colors, where the brain ends up not merging them to white, but instead mixes them in a completely different way.
Violet, or purple is interesting, because the red cones in your eyes have a little extra bump of sensitivity in the near ultraviolet range too aswell as in the yellow-red range. That's why blue and red mixed together appear as purple even though if it was using the same brain-calculations and that extra bump of sensitivty wasn't there it would have appeared as green instead.
3:30 only works if you choose 60 fps, which happens to be only on 720p and 1080p. Otherwise RUclips doesn't show you the even frames, which are cyan, so you see only red. If the video was 30 fps, it would have kind of worked for every resolution, but worse because there's less frames, so the colors switch at half the speed. That's why this video is 60 fps. I wouldn't mind all videos being 60 fps to be honest. 60 fps is really smooth.
For best results on the red/cyan effect at 3:30, watch in HD at 60fps. I promise I didn't forget to edit in the red or the cyan frames. They're there. Also it will look more/less gray depending on the brightness of your screen.

60fps is not a high enough framerate for the segment at 3:28. You can distinguish the flashes pretty easily. Probably need upwards of 144fps

there arent any ù's or ó's in the English language
There are in the Hungarian language.....
uú üű oó -----....
What are you talking about? I hope you do know there are other languages? And if you have a problem with that you should leave the internet
L lol ik, but not in English
when I watch these type of videos where you have to stare at something for a while, I always expect a scary pop-up
Hi ARMY~♡
same, and hellooo armyyy
ikr
I also thought same
Ikr, I was actually checking the comments to see if there was anything like that XD
Did anyone else see the yellow lines on the spinny thingy?
Yes
Im not in that list :)
same here. something tells me she's got something wrong.
+Lord GabeN even when I watch this a at 1080 60p
imgur.com/a/DYV7A
From 4:13 to the end. That would explain why when I'm in the room where there's a lot of "yellow light" (like sunset or red walls) and I stay longer and when I go outside to white-gray room I always see blue light. That's weird, because none of my friends or family experiences that.
1:37 I was also taught about the spinning wheel in art class
when you're colourblind and dont understand a video....
Matthew Brooks Who is it to be colorblind?
It said blue, I saw white, and I am not colourblind
Matthew Brooks yea pretty much
Get one of those cool glasses
ilikepizza that doesn't work
2:33 Illuminati confirmed
IKRRRR
Lol just relized
where
LEGIT
*illuminati song*
Thanks, Physics Girl.... As an artist, I knew that pigment is different than light. But.., your explanation gave me the "Why".... And that "Why" is truly remarkable.... Thanks, again.
Okay but those "yellow" dots at the beginning were actually orange, right?
Yup
+Ainsley Harriott k
and the dot is black right?
It's a mix for me
and the 'blue'' dot was actually light blue, right?
My eyes been fake since day 1... Telling me lies
smh.. can't trust no one
I'm dead 😂😂😂
lol
LOLL
I just dyed 😂😂😂😂😂😂😵😵😵😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
what all i saw was red ?
Put it on 720p60
It just made Pink
+Im Done Just Done OMG IT WORKED
Same... only red.
If u r on mobile it doesn't work
@3:30 it won't work in 144p-480p resolution because those run only @30fps, but 720p-1080p work @60fps in this video so the "white" gray works.
I saw gray when you swap red and blue quickly.
Beyza0328 111 Thank you very much. :)
when I was at 720 all I seen was bright red. I changed to 1080 and seen light blue.
Beyza0328 111
I wonder if this has to do with the speed capability of our graphics card/display. 1080 has to draw more pixels than 720, so it's harder for the display system to keep up. Both 1080 and 720 looks gray to me; probably because my system is slower than yours. Don't know...just a guess.
The gap between the changes makes an absence of stimulus in the cone which is interpreted as dark: dark+white=grey.
I saw grey too,friend.
stare at the yellow star. i see very tiny flashes of red & green.
ya
I saw yellow.
My computer has the yellow lights on it so..
Wat when she said blue i saw white o-o
o-o
+kev luo I see white to😂
Wait... was I supposed to see white? I legit just saw red and became very sad...
Same
Me Too
It said may bit work on mobile
Guys I figured out how to get it to work! Just hold the screen farther away, first I saw red and then I tried to hold it farther away from my face and it worked, I saw a really really light blue
I saw green
i always knew pigment vs light was different, but never actually knew why until now.
it was a strange thing to learn, way back in middle school, though it was pretty cool. red green and blue vs red yellow and blue (or technically magenta, green, and cyan)
Who else had a head ache
Me
me !
Meee! I have to massage my head now
me
Omg, me I thought it was only me also my stomach
3:34 um? all I saw was a red screen that said "pause any time to see color". I paused and it was still red. I'm on a laptop... ?
I guess it's because my internet whatever isn't fast enough.
I got the same here!!!
Yakata Shinigami when I put the video quality higher it worked a little.
It's the quality. Put the quality at 140p and then switch to 720p and it will work. Good luck!
Alessandro Correira it dont work tho
I'm using mobile
I see only red screen here
mackhomie6 What?
Great explanation of how RGB works in our brains. Thanks! Get better soon, we need you!
Yup she's definitely white
lmao
Josesthler Ticklays No it's red and black IM KiDIMg
LOL
No, she's blue and black
The by far easiest way to learn how complimentary colors work is to use RGB values for five minutes. 255,255,255 is white, 0,0,0 is black, 150,150,150 is gray, 0,255,255 is cyan, 255,0,255 is yellow, and 255,255,0 is magenta.
Since monitors (and computers) use only the three colors we have cones for, this leads to RGB being very intuitive after learning the basic concept of it.
There we go. That's all the mystery's about, I'm surprised the people who were interviewed didn't know of this.
+ODeathDragon To most people, computers are just magical black boxes :P you'd be amazed at how little the average user actually knows about what they're using.
+Eva Upfold Can confirm, on little magic box right now.
+Tim Stahel (Moustached Viking)
Although, red+green = yellow. and green + blue = magenta. But you were close in the color arrangement you listen.
You got the green + blue = cyan correct, though!
0:10 says don't move your eyes as an ad pops up
***** yeh, i don't use it as it stops creators like me from earning money
***** yeh
+Kartik Arora nah, they are paid by each view of the ad on the video.
+CPD XD101 Not even..I have 6k views and only 6 cents..it's impossible that only 6 times an add to be shown 6000 times...
3:41 I saw skyblue but not white==.R u kidding me?
I saw red?
+Ethan Payne Are you sure that you are talking about "*3:41*"? I can't believe you xD.
GG WP yeah haha wtf? My life is a lie
+Ethan Payne Yea.You are right . Our life might be a lie because the senses we have may be just our imaginations or even hallucination.
GG WP 0°0 trippy
1:07 I did that science experiment in 5th grade, wait I’m still in 5th grade..
It was red for me not white xD
Wait wtf, now that I look at it again it's the cyan :
Oh god wait what the heck, now I see it flashing, it hurts my eyes
I got a headache, and I saw red and blue...
not white.
Put fps on max.
Didnt work for me until I put it in HD 1080p 60.
Thanks
I only saw red but she did say it might not work on mobile so
yeah it's gotta be at 60 fps. if it's at 30 you only see half the frames (the red ones)
I saw only red too.
same
That first guy's hat said cookie in Japanese
Lol
are you sure i thought it was a smiley face
no there's two characters in Japanese katakana that looks like a smiley face
+Dee Worsham 4
William Frawley ok?
I saw a red screen when you said I should've seen white.
you have to watch it at high quality 60 frames per second for it to work
Same
Put it on 720p60
I was watching it on my phone and saw white like wtf 😂
i was watching it on my laptop and saw grey :|
In graphic arts we refer to these differences as "transmitted" and "reflected" light. We scan to digital using transmitted light (red, green, blue) and print on a paper in reflective color (y,m,c,k).
This video is literally some girl just explaining physics in an easy to understand way to those who didn't learn this back at school for whatever reason.
Eh, I can appreciate that.
lol same
It's less of physics in this video and more of biology
This isn't physics haha physics is way harder
Evan Wheeler True, true.
or those 12-year-olds, such as myself, who are just curious about the world around them.
I just want to learn science here dude...
And I'm glad she's making these, it's surprisingly easy to understand.
3:32 Or you might have gotten a seizure.
Fezezen i did
Porygon pokemon seizure remix wsrning
Porygon is definitely worse.
Fezezen iiia
Fezezen iii
I am colorblind and I got so confused...
same
Same
same
then don't watch it
lol really? im want to see how a color blind see the world.
3:25, it didn't work. Maybe it wasn't switching fast enough? I could see both colors, maybe I also saw some white, but it certainly didn't look anything like just a white screen. I also saw some longer red streaks along the bottom.
I saw white with a little tad of blue
I saw a gross greyish colour.
Maybe the blue cone is a bit stronger than the red cone. Same here
i saw white-ish gray
+ZLIFE 101 same
i saw full on red
If you shine red blue and green on my eyes you get the illuminati..
if you shine red blue and green light into my eyes i'd go blind.
+Whitney Richardson lol
+Whitney Richardson lol xD
Yo
Wow... xD
when the screen is changing from red to blue and creating white, turn your speed up to 2. all you will see is red, or blue and that only.
That is because when you speed up the video, it actually skips every other frame of the video, instead of doubling the frame-rate of the video.
Not entirely true. It doubles the framerate of the video, but the monitor got a max of 60 FPS. I got a 144 Hz monitor, and it worked a lot better when i doubled the speed :)
nice little discovery;)
I'm on mobile so it was only red
Wtf i saw Both i rolled back 10 second and saw red instead of blue
It gets so much stranger with impossible colors, where the brain ends up not merging them to white, but instead mixes them in a completely different way.
Violet, or purple is interesting, because the red cones in your eyes have a little extra bump of sensitivity in the near ultraviolet range too aswell as in the yellow-red range. That's why blue and red mixed together appear as purple even though if it was using the same brain-calculations and that extra bump of sensitivty wasn't there it would have appeared as green instead.
I saw a gray with a green undertone..
Grey*
Both grey and gray are correct
+Tavros Nitram gr"a"y is in "A"merica, gr"e"y is in "E"ngland
ha nice obisidian but I think Americans say both
+ObsidianLucario actually grey is in BRITAIN
3:32 I see red O.O
set it to 60fps
+Florencia Colombo Blanco how
me too O.O
Same but I'm on computer and it may not work on ipad
+Imagining Rainbow I saw white am I special
When you did the blue and red flashy colour screen bit, it didn't turn white for me o.o
It turned grey
+✿ Yurmii ✿ well it's better than what I saw... two colors alternating quickly.
Me neither weird
I just saw solid red the entire time...
i only saw red.....
The white screen effect at 3:29 works at 60 fps (the frame rate of this video) but apparently not at 30 fps (run video at half speed to see).
Why is this in my recommended
same it must be a sigh of us dating
+Taner Burgaz lol u wild
Same
Same
I know I was like huh?
It wasn't flashing.. It was just red......?

3:30 only works if you choose 60 fps, which happens to be only on 720p and 1080p. Otherwise RUclips doesn't show you the even frames, which are cyan, so you see only red. If the video was 30 fps, it would have kind of worked for every resolution, but worse because there's less frames, so the colors switch at half the speed. That's why this video is 60 fps. I wouldn't mind all videos being 60 fps to be honest. 60 fps is really smooth.
