It's wild how last weeks episode is one of the most anxiety inducing episodes and this is one of the most cathartic episodes. Such great character work for Richie, with one of the best needle drops.
The previous episode using forks as an element of tension, discomfort and lack of respect at family dinner, and here, a learning method in perseverance, responsibility, and respect For God's sake, WHY IS THIS SERIES SO GOOD???
In addition to that, I like the contrast in how forks are used as a symbol of tension and chaos by Mikey, whereas Carmy uses spoons as somewhat of a comfort utensil (with the way he uses them when stressed or when explaining things).
I love how they pointed out that Richie is at his best and happiest when he's genuinely connecting with people. He's so abrasive and crass throughout the entire first season that it's easy to miss how he gets along with so many other people in the kitchen, how he's the one who deals with the customers out front and knows them all by name. The signs of Richie's purpose were always there, except just like him we don't quite see it until he does.
The Emmy he won was for the first season. The second season will only compete at the next Emmy Awards in September and season 3 only in 2025's Emmy. For me, it's already guaranteed that he will win his second one for this episode, and that the series will repeat all the other awards won at the previous Emmy.
@@leolegendario1 I was very confused about this at first. But I was very glad when I found out that was all for season 1, because I really hope Jaime Lee Curtis gets nominated for best guest role too.
The funny thing is, Carmy respects Richie so much more than Richie ever realized because 'good with people' is something Carmy would never be described as. Carmy is this incredible chef, master of the kitchen, butnhe can't connect with others in a healthy way and constantly messes up and misunderstands what people need from him. Richie has so much emotional intelligence, but it's hampered by a deep lack of self worth and self respect, so his gaze is constantly being turned inwards in self destructive ways. When he just let's himself be and focuses on servicing others social needs, he's actually insanely perceptive and able to act on those perceptions with remarkable charisma. He found his worth.
I think that's one of the big reasons that Richie and Mikey were best friends, they both were so good with people and had incredible situational and emotional awareness. Like Carmy says in his monologue in Season 1, Mikey could enter a room and instantly take the temperature of it. I think Richie has that adeptness as well, and it's so great to see him reach for his full potential.
not even the biggest taylor fan but that love story needle drop is one of my favorites i've ever seen in a tv show lmao such a satisfying moment and a perfect song for it. pretty sure ebon thanked taylor in one of his award show acceptance speeches lol
I never thought me a grown man would cry so much over a fictional character singing along to Taylor Swift but here we are... It's so nice to see someone who clearly was in so much pain finally get some purpose, I've been there and the feeling when you finally start breaking out is euphoric .
The Bear has several great and fun characters that I love, but I think this episode positions Richie as the best in the series, god, Ebon is one of those actors that always makes me laugh and always manages to surprise me
@@tharukaepaarachchi6110this is a late comment but HOLY CRAP HES MICRO!!! Looking back idk how I didn’t realize that, such different characters and he really melts into this role so well that I just didn’t even recognize him. Absolutely crazy
0:06 This was how I felt the first time I saw this too, but it surpassed all my expectations. Now this is my most rewarched episode of any TV show! I will often just put it on while I'm getting ready for work in the morning. It just makes me so happy for some reason.
I love this comment so much. I'm just about to re-watch the episode (along with their full-length reaction). I just watched it 4 days ago when they posted, but my soul needs it again already! haha So great.
i think how wholesome this episode is was enhanced tenfold by the usual pessimism, stress, chaos and tension throughout the series, making this episode in particular almost euphoric when ritchie is singing along to taylor swift toward the end. my favourite episode of the series honestly
I think y'all are my favorite reactors.. between the 3 of you, no angle or perspective is missed... Having a pen & paper to note parts of each episode is also smart and keeps you more engaged than many other reaction channels. Been following you guys on Succession, The Bear, and now Mr Robot. This format is a perfect! 👍
Don't worry, Eric, I also had water start leaking from my eye at that exact moment the first time I watched this episode (and basically every time I've rewatched it). I love this season so much, and how the show has taken time to focus on each character. I never imagined a Richie episode would pull at my heart strings like this, but here we are. We've watched him struggle at The Beef/Bear to find his purpose. The first episode of the season had him in the basement telling Carmy he's afraid they're going to "drop his ass" because he not the talented/genius/star of the crew. Then he butts into Fak's business with the reno (see mold falling from the ceiling). He's constantly arguing with Natalie. And to get here, with him finally respecting himself and feeling that he is worthy and worth it, it's beautiful.
This episode hits so close to home. As a bartender I have worked with a lot of “Richies”- guys with potential but who have so much trauma and have just kind of been surviving and haven’t been able to channel their natural ability. Watching them find themselves, find pride, in a kitchen, is really satisfying. It was like seeing an old coworker finally finding their spot.
This was my favorite episode of the whole show so far!!! I feel exactly like Eric, holding out for a character to believe in themselves and it finally happens. So pure
It made me cry a lot the first time I saw it, seeing someone succeed and be happy after being in pain just made me so much more emotional than any sad scene I've seen. Such a well acted and written character!
You cannot watch this episode without getting some joy tears for Richie Love Calvin with the Edgar Wright call and who winds up being Chef Terry but our very own Doris Thatcher from Hot Fuzz 😄
The woman working at that fancy restaurant looks and acts so much like Alison Brie that I'm convinced they wrote the role for Alison (esp considering all the other Community references and associations) but probably the dates didn't work out or something
Richie has always been great with people, I noticed that back in season 1. Glad to see him lean into that and hopefully we see Chef Jess again?? She did the double back and told him not to be a stranger..so maybe? I hope so
Just watched the episode before this reaction. Holy shit that was an amazing episode. I can't believe how much I needed to see Ritchie begin to pull his life together.
It’s one the best two back to back episode combinations on tv. -they’re both anxiety inducing for completely different reasons one with negative reinforcement and one positive reinforcement. -it’s rare to evoke such emotion from joy of watching people get it as we do with Richie
Just when I thought I couldn't love Richie more, this episode comes. The show is so brilliant. My heart just was so filled in this one. His heart and love for people is so deep to actually be able to channel all his strengths is amazing. Like Eric, I was pumped, and tears were flowing.
the pure giddy wholesomeness this episode gave was a really welcome change to the usual chaos, drama and tension. genuinely my favourite episode of the entire series.
This series will go down as some of the best filming and writing we will ever see and experience. We are at a high time of phenomenal writing. And acting is thriving because of it. Can’t wait for you guys to see the next few episodes. Which truly explain why these actors won so many awards. Hopefully they will win more for this season. So well deserving.
There are few pieces of media that truly make me feel like 'Hey, I wish I could forget about this, so I could get to experience it again for the first time'. This episode is one of them. While the entire show is amazing (and one of my personal favorites), this episode is just something else. It gains more value once you've followed Richie from the beginning and understand where he's coming from with his refusal to change (I feel like it was easy to judge him on S1 by forgetting that he had lost Mike as well) and, in the end, this one really feels like a victory. I don't really know how to put it into words, but once the episode was over, I felt so... at peace? We went from lack of purpose, from him feeling like he had nothing to offer while his people had so much. How everyone around him seemed to be improving while he was stuck. To him realizing that his skills were there, and they were important as well. That he also had value, because a restaurant is not just its chefs (something he can't do at a high level), but also the people they serve (and that he can do and do well). It was so beautiful to see. Richie's journey resonates with me on a personal level and this episode was a nice thing to watch, one of those instances where media can actually inspire and help and maybe even heal, apart from providing entertainment. Beautifully written and performed. Favorite episode of the show so far and absolute favorite cameo as well! The noise I made when I saw THE Olivia Colman! And how her story resonated as well with that "never too late to start over". Ugh! I hope we get at least one more episode like this one on s3.
This is my favorite episode because the restaurant I work at did the same thing for me. Helped me take pride in the food industry again and give guests a proper experience. Bravo 👏🏻
This is my favorite episode for the entire show and it's so well earned. They could have done this sooner but they really made it seem like real development and it feels earned.
I've been waiting for you guys to reach that point... It was such a gut punch in a good way... I feel that we have been seen the "Every second counts" mantra a lot since the beginning of the show and it always had a kind of negative connotation... but here it got flipped around... So beautiful every second is a moment to make a difference! So beautiful!
that pan to the framed photo of carmy and will poulter is so satisfying. i figured that’s who he was talking about in the moment but the way they add that scene 2 episodes later is brilliant in my opinion
Forks is so fantastic, and coming directly after the phenomenon that is episode 6, it flips the script and gives us not only Richie's transformation, but HOPE. So much of this show is frantic and stress, but Richie finding his purpose is not only exhilarating for him, but for the audience as well. An incredible episode and my absolute favorite.
I don't know if I've ever seen the whole squad capture my exact reaction and experience with an episode than this one. I'm so incredibly proud of Richie and for all the anxiety this show has, nothing compares to how it warms my heart.
I am kinda watching over the series with you guys for the 2nd time and I have to say that this show is utterly amazing. Everything is so well written and during all the chaos in S1, now we see all the different characters evolve so much - Marcus , Tina , Ritchie. Its just a such great TV series I would say its probably one of the best things that have come out in recent years and it deserves every single award there is.
Dude, I love how this actor portrays Richie and gives him a character arc throughout season one to season two. I cannot wait till I see him play the Thing/ Ben Grimm in The Fantastic 4️⃣
On my first watch I replayed the scene of Richie answering the questions and driving home singing like 3 times. Such a great episode and character arc.
As someone who has worked in hospo for a very long time, the Bear hits hard. But I mainly worked front-of-house, not in the kitchen, so this particular episode hit harder than all the rest. When a team clicks like they do here, it's magical. Transcendent. And this episode manages to somehow capture how that feels. The first time I watched it I was transfixed, and every subsequent time I watch through tears. Amazing, brilliant television.
This is 100% the best episode for me of the show, obviously there's the big ones that everyone talks about, but this is a fav. Richie is the best character and his growth is so awesome.
This was such a cathartic episode. Richie finally finds his purpose. He may not know how to really cook or be a master chef but he’s a really personable guy when he lets it shine. He’s always had it in him but often couldn’t get out of his own way to let it come to the forefront. Getting emotional from seeing him finally thrive definitely wasn’t something I’d ever expect when the show first started but that’s the power of great writing and acting!
Fun facts about this episode: 2x3 Ritchie told his daughter he loved Taylor Swift he just needed a break. Also Tiff had a Taylor Swift shirt in 2x6 so the love of Taylor Swift runs in the family. 2x3 and 2x5 Frank was mentioned. Realized though I think this was the first time they confirmed Frank was seeing Tiff though, it was ambiguous before. “Every Second Counts” has been shown a lot this season, but in particular it can be seen at Luca’s shop in 2x4, and now we know both he and Carmy got the phrase from Chef Terry. The 3 star restaurant Ritchie stages at (stage means to temporarily work in a kitchen for a short period for experience, payment may or may not be guaranteed), isn’t given a name in the episode. It’s likely based on the 3 star restaurant Ever. The Chicago Deep Dish experience was also based off an anecdote that happened in “Unreasonable Hospitality” by Will Guidara, which Ritchie is shown reading in the episode too. There’s a few experiences in the book The Bear based the show on, including Ritchie’s journey. At the end of the Taylor Swift montage, during the pan of Chicago, you can see the statue of Ceres Ritchie brought up in 1x6.
It's not just based on Ever, it was actually filmed there. The chef who came out to yell at the FOH staff about the smudged plate had the logo for Ever on the left breast pocket of his chef's jacket. Minor pedantic quibble, it is only a two star restaurant in reality. There are two three star restaurants in Chicago currently (out of 13 in the whole country, with nearly a third of them in New York City) - Alinea and Smyth. Both of these restaurants have been mentioned at some point on the show. There are currently three two star restaurants there - Ever, Oriole, and Moody Tongue. So while Ever may not have ever been ranked as the best restaurant in the world, it is arguably one of the top 50 restaurants in America, and one of the best restaurants in Chicago.
Love that you're watching The Bear! You should do Interview with the Vampire TV show on AMC+ next, it is as underrated as Black Sails was, and just as brilliant with the storytelling.
Pequods has been repeatedly voted the best deep dish in the city. I have dined there a few times and it is more than the best deep dish, it's the best pizza I have ever had...no exaggeration
Honestly, there's some great stuff in this series throughout. But this episode - to me - is completely at the top of the list (yes even above Christmas). So good. And then we haven't even talked about the David Byrne-song under it.

He’s always had it in him but often couldn’t get out of his own way to let it come to the forefront. Getting emotional from seeing him finally thrive definitely wasn’t something I’d ever expect when the show first started but that’s the power of great writing and acting!
Oh man! This episode, this show! Just great!
Fun facts about this episode:
2x3 Ritchie told his daughter he loved Taylor Swift he just needed a break.
My favourite episode
Love that you're watching The Bear! You should do Interview with the Vampire TV show on AMC+ next, it is as underrated as Black Sails was, and just as brilliant with the storytelling.
This is my perfect episode of a television show.
I love this episode SO much. before this, Richie just annoyed me no end. seeing him step up, grow up, and respect himself and others is just GOLD.
i watch this episode every other day, it really helped me get a second wind in life. 🍻
I also cried when he's singing Taylor Swift in the car.
My favorite The Bear episode. Ever. Also, this made me realize that Richie is now my favorite character on the show ❤
This was what Eichie needed soooo bad. It was an awesome episode, one of the few not so chaotic ones which was nice.
Pequods has been repeatedly voted the best deep dish in the city. I have dined there a few times and it is more than the best deep dish, it's the best pizza I have ever had...no exaggeration
One of the best episodes of tv ever.
That’s awesome that they brought you guys Pequods. I make sure to get deep dish every time I go back home.
The reaction we all been waiting for.
Honestly, there's some great stuff in this series throughout. But this episode - to me - is completely at the top of the list (yes even above Christmas).
So good. And then we haven't even talked about the David Byrne-song under it.
Amazing episode.
Forks my fav episode so far in this series. Richie is the dark horse of this show.
Seeing Richie thrive was everything!! I’m so proud of him and I still get tears 😭❤️
Favorite episode of the entire show
