The Central was the main line that ran within fifty feet of Emery's bedroom when he was a child. It didn't matter that it was the outermost track of a casually used switch yard, it was still a main line to him.
During Emery's developing years, when he could afford a camera and film money, he moved to Dearborn, Michigan. Now he was in the big time--on a real main line! The Michigan Central ran through Dearborn, but in most circles it was known as The New York Central System.
Most of this Odyssey is from film generated in Detroit and the adjacent vicinity. Next Emery's interest trickled down to Ohio, predominately Toledo, which is on the Central's MAIN main line.
After Toledo, Emery encountered locations in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. These outlying encounters were usually in conjunction with other railfan destinations. So sit back and enjoy the Central as Emery saw it.

7:00 It’s crazy how much a place can change in a matter of 50 years. The Ann Arbor station area is now single tracked, six Amtraks and one NS local per day. I love seeing how the line I film on such a regular basis today was once like, in a time when freight was much more prominent and trains had much more diversity.
Great to see the Toledo Central Union Terminal back when all tracks were still in use. NYC ran a lot of passenger trains. I've never heard of, "The Michiganer."
That C-Liner is magnificent.
I agree, its a shame they had many mechanical problems.
The New York Central had some of the coolest engine designs both steam and locomotive, I especially liked their streamliner deseil locomotives
It was a special time until about 1960.............then it began it's deep plummet.
Very true, the NY Central and this country too.
Got this DVD a couple months ago. Definitely interesting seeing the classics. Will be ordering part 2 soon.
The New York Central Railroad.
The Water Level Route
The video quality is superb. Thanx.
Wow the only C-liner ever caught on video!
That Great Lakes Arrow Train particularly the Engineer’s Cab looks just like a 1970 Pontiac GTO while the Carraiges look like a GMC T6H-5305A.
That’s what they were based off
3:46 YO!!! AERO TRAIN IN TOLEDO LETS GOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
I live in Toledo, so it fascinates me when I see Toledo in the background of the videos
Like from Scott The woz?

That is a great film transfer.
great music too! thanks
Wonderful video!
2:09 that is THE strangest thing I’ve ever seen on the NYC, double hancock air whistles! I didn’t know the NYC even used them!
The video quality is so good I thought these were all reenactment runs at first.....But on this scale, that would be...Impossible!!!!!
Ellie Flint Right, but there are no Jade Green E8s left.
as I said, it would have been impossible for this to be a reenactment. Because a ton of the equipment pictured is no longer operable, and scrapped.
@@victoriacyunczyk there is one Jade Green E8 in a museum in New Jersey
Monopoly was lower then. The world was more human less Narcissistic then!
The New York Central was the epitome of a monopoly in it's day!
Love the video, love NYC,
Wow, what a GREAT video! I felt as though I'd entered a Time Warp back to my youth, when I was just getting my feet wet in the Greatest Hobby of All. I have several Green Frog DVDs, including "Steam in the 50's (you do know that's supposed to be " '50s," right?)" and its sequel, "________the '60s," plus "Classic Steam of the _____________." Somehow, this one REALLY got to me. I'll DEFINITELY have to check out the rest of your RUclips goodies!
Thanks very much, we are very glad you enjoyed the clip. Sorry about the apostrophe, it is corrected, thanks for the catch!
beautiful
I'll be ordering!
What a great era
Damn does this look great

My dads favorite !!
Que buenas loc's y paisajes.me encanta
I love the prr& nyc railroads
Wonderful!! What is the name of the tune and who performed it?
i'll see you on the-railyard depot junction system at the pasco amtrak station in about a couple-more hours at 0:26.00 till morning at dawn sooner before dusk at least-everyone thinks about that!
As nice as it is to watch NYC passenger trains and express freight blasting along the water level route, I just can't watch videos of them without thinking about how terrible their management was screwing things at this time, in just a few years they would purge all steam from their routes in an attempt to wipe them from memory, and not only put themselves into an economic flat spin, but also drag Pennsy down with them.
Yeah, arguably Pennsy was also in it's own downward spiral, but then the two already failing companies crashed into each other in the horribly organized Penn-Central merger, and it would eventually lead to their ultimate destruction, they had to be bailed out by Conrail, and eventually sold to NS and CSX, not successor companies, like Chessie was to B&O, or NS was to N&W, just a government bailout that was later split equally between two random competitors.
Oops! There seems to be a slight error on the track signaling blue prints at 07:29. There is a signal post in the middle of the tracks!
ThePainTrain765
ha ha
Sam Houston Noticed that too.
The tracks pulled up, single in the old road bid.
Nice
It should be playing Chattanooga choo choo by Glenn Miller or sentimental journey also by Glenn Miller
Is there a name to the intro song? What is it?
2:09 I have a lionel train based off that train
This is great !!! What big band is playing and what song?? The Technicolor look and the music remind you of the best of the past :)
7:05 that was Ann arbor michigan
Where's the sound?
What music is used in this video?
man i wish they built a real J3A Hudson for the UP SP And amtrak imagine amtrak with a steam engine
Are there any clips in this of steam at high speed with original sound?
There are a few high speed Steam runs in this video at the start, but any audio is dubbed from Emery's sound library. Back in those days one of the few ways to record audio was to drag a "portable" reel to reel recorder with you, which of course was quite labor intensive and time consuming to set up!
Notice the Canadian National Railways steam locomotive in one scene.
Thank god autorack cars today are covered. The ones in this vid look absolutely precarious.
If you mean the old style autoracks themselves looked unbalanced, they weren't. But, all those new cars in them were sitting ducks for vandalism. Those substantial losses were the primary reason the covered version was developed.
Did Emery Gulash who did shot a lot of footage over the years also professionally edited and added music , and narration or was it done by green frog productions ?
Emery shot 16mm film and in a lot of cases he would also record audio "wild" (not synced) at the same time on a reel to reel "portable" (for the day) tape recorder. Emery would then write up a script for editing for a program with locations and train numbers etc. for green Frog, then we would edit the transferred film and add Emery's sound-FX and also add music from sound libraries.
Green Frog Productions
Wow, Emery had a lot of foresight.
GreenFrogVideos is the circus in there
Newer Footage of NS SD 70 ACE #1066 running on the open rails.
Whats with the Canadian Pacific locomotive at 1:09 ?
Typhlosion 157 I believe the CP and NYC interchanged trains back in the day, so that might be why.

+GreenFrogVideos In This Film, Are The Sounds From The Clips? Or Are They Train Noises Today???
+Jaxs C. The Train Sound FX are from the original sound library's of Emery Gulash and his friend Walt Sardinha - These audio recordings were recorded for the most part at the same time as the Films, then we had to match them up or fill in as we could!
+GreenFrogVideos Oh! Ok!
+GreenFrogVideos Actually, The Snowy E Unit Part Needed A Edit. The First Train Sounds Are Matched Up With The Last Clip. And Last Clip Matches With The First One. Can You Try And Create It?
