Thanks for posting, worked on two sections of the M25 during its construction,A41-M1northbound , McAlpines were main contractor I was working for Associated Asphalt then onto Dartford, main contractor Birse /Associated Asphalt.Happy days in shorts and boots, boy how the job has changed!
I was involved with the A12 to QE 11 Bridge, along with building the bridge and Lakeside, the other thing I noticed, no PPE, hi viz vests, only a few wearing helmets...oh Happy days... glad I am now retired.
As a child, we travelled that very section in the 1980s - we would get on at J25 (A10) and come off at J28 (A12) - I remember it well with the two impressive tunnels and the M11 interchange. Strangely, the M25 was only 4 lanes under the A10 at the time - 6 lanes on the said section though. I do remember the A12 Chelmsford Bypass being built at the time as well.
Imagine if the M25 motorway was built in the 2000s and was completed in early/mid 2010s. With 3 and 4 lanes and hard shoulder both ways. Probably wouldn’t make it any difference but it seems that the M25 London Orbital Motorway was very confidential for London back then to allow traffic to avoid heading into Central London and obviously formed a boundary with counties including Essex, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Surrey and Kent (and previously Middlesex). And with 2 tunnels being built to the north and 2 bore tunnels known as the Dartford Tunnel and QEII Bridge that crosses under and over the River Thames to the east. And neighbouring villages had to be moved or destroyed because of the construction of the M25 motorway. So much landscape has been lost during the construction of the M25 motorway outside of London.
Very interesting, would be good to see these locations today. Thanks.
