  • Thinking takes time! This is the insight that led Dan Donaworth of Dan’s Custom Machining to rely more heavily on the automation capabilities of his software. Some CAM systems (he uses Autodesk Fusion 360) offer the ability to develop templates for automatically programming certain part types. The programmer can equip the template to select the right series of tools for any given feature so that the programmer does not have to recall and reconstruct that tool sequence each time a variation on that same part comes to the shop. Donaworth discusses his use of time-saving software automation in the latest episode of “The One-Person Shop”

all job shop doing short-run work, where fast setup and a trouble-free machining process determine the job’s profitability, what is the effective way to hold thin, delicate parts? The answer Dan’s Custom Machining found is vacuum workholding. This video describes the use of quick-setup workholding using the force of vacuum pressure.

Such a promising video and so little actual useful stuff.
How an actual small machine shop uses actual templates would be interesting. Import new part - use the templates & run part....

    Did guy say "rest material."

That’s right, he did say “rest material.” This refers to the CAM software’s geometry for the “rest” of the material that is left over between one cut and the next. For example, a large-diameter tool leaves some material behind in the corner of a pocket, then the software applies a smaller-diameter tool to cut the “rest” of this material.
