I know that "Tutti Frutti" was the bigger hit and honestly one of the more important songs in rock history, but I will always prefer "Long Tall Sally".
The following is a list of my favorites: 1,. Heart and Soul-The Cleftones 2. Little Girl Of Mine-The Cleftones 3. Can't We Be Sweethearts-The Cleftones 4. Silhouettes- The Rays 5. Rock Around The Clock-Bill Haley and The Comets 6. Little Star-The Elegants 7. Hushabye-The Mystics 8. Why Do Fools Fall In Love?-Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers 9. I'm Not A Juvenile Delinquent-Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers 10 Come Go With Me-The Del Vikings 11. Tonite Tonite-The Melokings 12 The Angles Listened In-The Crests 13. Pretty Little Angel-The Crests 14. At The Hop-Danny and The Juniors 15. Rock 'N' Roll Is Here To Stay-Danny and The Huniors 16. I'm Gonna Laugh At You-The Calendars 17. I Wonder Why-Dion and The Belmonts There are some more but those are the basic songs I like nad love. By the way, Tonite Tonite by The Melokings is my favorite. It's just that I forgot to put it at number 1 and was too lazy to fix it, and no, It's not a typo, it's how it's spelled in the song. Actually come to think of it, it might be a 60's song, but I'm not sure. I'll include it on the list in the 60's video.
"Smokey Joe's Cafe" - The Robins (later known as The Coasters) "Rocket 88" -- Jackie Brenston & His Delta Cats (featuring Ike Turner on lead guitar!) "Sixty Minute Man" - The Dominoes "Only You (And You Alone)" - The Platters "Sh-Boom" - The original version by The Chords, where you can tell the song's about sex "Blue Suede Shoes" - Carl Perkins "Got My Mojo Working" - Muddy Waters "I Got A Woman" - Ray Charles "Love Is Strange" - Mickey & Sylvia ...and, because the '50s wasn't JUST rock and roll or R&B... "Mona Lisa" - Nat King Cole "The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise" - Les Paul & Mary Ford "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song" - Harry Belafonte "Come On-A My House" - Rosemary Clooney "Tonight You Belong To Me" - Patience and Prudence
What? No Doo-wops? No Frank Sinatra? No Bebop or Cool Jazz? No popular standards? Maybe nobody on Mojo was living in the USA in the 1950s. It's a good list but mostly confined to one musical style,except for Darin and Cash. It was a great innovative decade for many types of music,and the technology:45s,LPs,and vinyl stereo would dominate for a few decades.
An underrated song that was popular in the 50s in my opinion that I found from looking at Billboard Hot 100 #1 hits is Santo and Johnny's Sleepwalk from 1959 which rarely seems to get mentioned in lists of 50's songs for some reason. Definitely sounds ahead of its time. Otherwise not a bad list . Also there is an older video for Mack the Knife.
This is really the decade that sets the sites of second half of the 20th Century popular music. Thanks for your as usual entertaining take on some fun memories.
I would take that time machine and go back to the 50s and get me when I was 16 or 17 years old and put a note inside my pocket saying this is where your kind of music starts so I can enjoy the 60s, 70s and 80s....hehe

This is my kind of music even though I'm 15 and it may seem odd in this generation I still say these are my kind of tunes that have yet to loose my interest in!😀
@@philcorey3200 Meh. Why do Fools Fall in Love and My Girl were good, but I honestly can't think of anything else he did. I'll stick with Buddy Holly, thanks.
@@philcorey3200 You're absolutely right, Lymon had one of the most incredible sound of the '50's, influencing music for decades ; hearing him it's obvious that he was the motivating artist for Michael Jackson ; this list also failed to include a single slow ballad
Selling records isn't what this is about, Chuck Berry is the founding father of Rock n Roll, Elvis only sold more records cuz he was white and the nation was racist at the time. Ask any rock group, they were influenced by Berry not Elvis
Have you even listened to Chuck Berry, he was a better guitar player and had a much more interesting voice, plus he had a lot more variability in his songs then Elvis
There's probably too little video footage of artists before that decade. Also, before the 50's people weren't as concerned with music as they were with, let's say... the world wars and everything in between...
ari1234a ... I couldn’t agree more! You ask any Rock and Roll cover band to play a classic “Rock & Roll” song ... and they are arguably more likely to play Chuck than Elvis! if it isn’t a Chuck Berry song ... then it’s likely going to be a Little Richard or Bo Diddley song! The “true” King of Rock & Roll is ... CHUCK BERRY!!
* - If you go by Popularity, Influence, Impact, The Charts, Sales then and Sales in the later Decades - it goes as follows : 1. Jailhouse Rock (By far the Heaviest Song of the 50’s and another note, - Elvis started recording in 1953 and his Rockabilly Style started in 1954) 2. Johnnie B Goode (The piano player for C.Berry says that he was the true writer of this song...) 3. Heartbreak Hotel (Elvis again-Nothing ever sounded like this tune at the time) 4. Hound Dog (Elvis’ idea for this tune was so explosive and set the rock n roll phenomenon) 5. Don’t Be a Cruel (Yes Elvis again-Most artists of that period claim this as there favourite tune) 6. Rock Around the Clock 7. That’ll Be The Day 8.Great Balls of Fire 9.Good Golly Miss Molly & 10. Blue Suede Shoes (Both Carl & Elvis get the credit on this as they both made a huge impact) *Leave the race excuses out of it and all the other lame excuses, (who’s the better guitarist, who wrote songs, Yada,Yada,Yada - it’s who created the best songs on vinyl for our listening pleasure - “ELVIS OWNS THE 50’s” This is all WatchMojo needs to say !
I have my satellite radio tuned to 40s on 4, 50s on 5, 60s on 6, 70s on 7, 80s on 8, 90s on 9, Classic Vinyl and The Beatles Channel. It's amazing how often I find myself listening to 50s on 5. It just seems that was a really creative time period for music.
I didn't grow up in the fifties but my parents did, so I know a lot about old music. The one I'm waiting for is the 1980s, which in my taste is the best decade for music.

I pretty much agree with these 10 songs being "ground-breakers" and "game-changers"...maybe not in that exact order. And, of course, there were other great songs, but this list is pretty good.
The 1950s were a great deal more varied in music than you indicate. Looking at top ten songs of each year, two artists have six: Perry Como and Elvis Presley. Those with three are Eddie Fisher, Les Baxter, Pat Boone, Patti Page, and Rosemary Clooney. With two are Bobby Darin, Dean Martin, Doris Day, Gary Crosby & Bing Crosby, Jo Stafford, Kay Starr, Mario Lanza, Nat King Cole, Percy Faith, Perez Prado, Sammy Kaye, Teresa Brewer, The Fleetwoods, The Four Aces, The Weavers, and Tony Bennett. I have to also include two very popular pieces of music that influenced me greatly: Beethoven Symphony No. 5, Arturo Toscanini conducting the NBC Symphony Orchestra, radio broadcast of 1951 (I heard it live then); and Dave Brubeck, Take Five, 1959. The 1950s were also a scary time for some, with nuclear war considered imminent and racism widespread and common, not just against African-Americans either.
I'm not sure about 'Decade defining' but this is the first ever Top 10 where I have loved every one. I remember seeing Chubby Checkers walk out of his Hotel in Dublin as I was walking home from school in the 50s. I did not see him play, unfortunately.
10: Blue Suede Shoes - Carl Perkins 9: I Walk the Line - Johnny Cash 8: Whole Lotta Shakin´ Goin On - Jerry Lee Lewis 7: Summertime Blues - Eddie Cochran 6: (We´re Gonna) Rock Around the Clock - Bill Haley and His Comets 5: Hound Dog - Elvis Presley 4: That´ll Be The Day - Buddy Holly 3: Tutti Frutti - Little Richard 2: What´d I Say - Ray Charles Honorable Mentions: - Bo Diddley - Bo Diddley - Be-Bob-a-Lula - Gene Vincent - La Bamba - Ritchie Valens - All I Have To Do Is Dream - The Everly Brothers - Blueberry Hills - Fats Domino 1: Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry
Yea. I'm 24 now but I was about your age when I started to look into other decades for new music. It may not be new anymore but they're new to my ears. It's funny when an older person plays an old song and they're surprised that I know it.
Kinda half expected Runaround Sue or Little Darlin to be in this!! Gonna be 47 soon and was listening to this with my mother!!! Reeling and rocking to these timeless classics!!
Jerry lee Lewis, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent, Johnny Cash and Elvis are the most amazing musicians to date. Jerry’s piano skills are impeccable. Eddies twangy guitar and rebellious rockabilly mix of country and rock is extraordinary. Buddy’s smooth voice and amazing singing and guitar playing ability is the work of a genius. Gene was not the most famous star but his attitude and incredibly rebellious music will go down in history. Johnnys country talents are infamous and eternally incredible. Elvis was the King and has yet to be topped in popularity and talent to this day.
I love this music & I'm only 18 My top 5 favorite 50s/60s rock n roll songs: 1: Rock Around The Clock by Bill Haley And His Comets (1955) 2: Johnny B Goode by Chuck Berry (1958) 3: Runaway by Del Shannon (1961) 4: Shake, Rattle, And Roll by Bill Haley And His Comets (1955) 5: The Great Pretender by The Platters (1955)
I'm not sure if twist and shout is from the 50's or 60's bit man do I love that song. But these is one of the best list yet Watchmojo, thanks for these new series of great music.
@@MsThebeMoon "Covered in space" is not the same as actually 'flying in space". Chuck's recording is actually on "vinyl" into space for all eternity. Check it out!
I wasn't really into music much as a kid, but I really enjoyed music from the 50's. Now that I'm adult, I find myself listening to 80s music. I guess In 30 more years, I'll listen to today's music.
My top 10 of the 1950s: Hon. Mention1 : Bye Bye Love," by the Everly Brothers; Hon. Mention 2: "Allegheny Moon" by Patti Page ('56); 10. "The Great Pretender," by The Platters ('55); 9. "Whatever Will Be Will Be (Que Sera, Sera) by Doris Day; ('56)" 8. "Blueberry Hill," by Fats Domino ('56); 7. "All Shook Up by Elvis Presley ('57); 6. "Sweet Little Sixten," by Check Berry ('57); 5. At the Hop," Danny & the Juniors ('57); 4. "Mack the Knife," by Bobby Darin ('59); 3. "(We're Gonna) Rock Around the Clock," by Bill Haley and His Comets (1955); 2. "Jailhouse Rock," Elvis Presley ('57); 1. "Don't be Cruel/Hounddog" by Elvis Presley ('56)...
rojman123 ... yes indeed ... Elvis was definitely bad-ass in his younger days ... but I have always maintained that Chuck Berry is the “true” King of Rock and Roll! ... and he outlasted Elvis by four decades!
@Marcos Hernandez Cazan … no-one will ever challenge that Elvis made a huge impact on early Rock and Roll music … he did, after all have that distinctive and golden voice and pretty Southern boy good looks. However, that said, he didn’t hardly write any of his own songs … Chuck Berry did! You go to any jam session and ask them to play a “good ole Rock and Roll” song … they are gonna play Chuck … not Elvis (or the Beatles, for that matter). His songs are covered by everyone! Chuck Berry was the top billed artist for touring early Rock and Roll. He is the TRUE King of Rock and Roll in my opinion!
@J S … I completely disagree! My remark is not stupid whatsoever. Being “recognized” worldwide and the “level of fame and success” has much more to do with marketing than it has to do with contribution to the genre of music. Elvis had a Colonel Tom Parker … Chuck did not. Regardless of today’s continued worldwide marketing … Chuck Berry will always be the true King of Rock & Roll to me! It Elvis’s voice that is legendary … not his musicianship.
Song Artist 10. Blueberry Hill 10. Fats Domino 9. Summertime Blues 9. Eddie Cochran 8. Peggy Sue 8. Buddy Holly 7. Tutti Frutti 7. Little Richard 6. Great Balls of Fire 6. Jerry Lee Lewis 5. La Bamba 5. Ritchie Valens 4. I Walk The Line 4. Johnny Cash 3. Rock Around the Clock 3. Bill Haley 2. Jailhouse Rock 2. Elvis Presley 1. Johnny b. Goode 1. Chuck Berry

That 9, 7, 5 and 2 though ❤️🔥💯
I was born in 2000 but im still amused by the old school gigs❤️
This is my kind of music even though I'm 15 and it may seem odd in this generation I still say these are my kind of tunes that have yet to loose my interest in!😀
You got good taste kid.
Bro im 13 and the only music i like is 50s n 60s music.
None of this new generation crap.
i know right same way at ur age good taste in music dood i like dat now lets go to the hop and dance lol
No one cares, fuck you
+WALLe COOKIE and also no one gives a shit about you either fuck off
Johnny B. Goode. This one iconic song contains within it all simplicity, stimulation, and raw excitement of all great rock n' roll.
Thank Marty mcfly
How about "Rockin' Robin", "Rock and Roll Music" or Why do Fools Fall in Love?"
I love music from the 50s. It had a certain charm and rhythm to it.
Still say ya gotta give it to Elvis
No, I'd give it to Buddy Holly.
Frankie Lymon is a trillion times better than Elvis or Buddy Holly & all of them
@@philcorey3200 Meh. Why do Fools Fall in Love and My Girl were good, but I honestly can't think of anything else he did. I'll stick with Buddy Holly, thanks.
@@philcorey3200
You're absolutely right, Lymon had one of the most incredible sound of the '50's, influencing music for decades ; hearing him it's obvious that he was the motivating artist for Michael Jackson ; this list also failed to include a single slow ballad
The 1950s are a nice decade for songs.
But I think the 1960s - 1980s are the best decades when it comes to music. :)
Nah 1950s my dude (in my opinion)
Alfonso fraire for me it’s 40s-50s
I'm happy to see Chuck Berry over Elvis, he is the father of Rock n Roll and he deserves the recognition.
Nah, Elvis sold a LOT more records.
Selling records isn't what this is about, Chuck Berry is the founding father of Rock n Roll, Elvis only sold more records cuz he was white and the nation was racist at the time. Ask any rock group, they were influenced by Berry not Elvis
rick charles
So did Vanilla Ice. What's your point?
Elvis is 10x better than berry
Have you even listened to Chuck Berry, he was a better guitar player and had a much more interesting voice, plus he had a lot more variability in his songs then Elvis
Cool idea, but why'd you start by jumping ahead to the '50s? What about the '20s, '30s, and '40s?
Those eras had a lot of singles, I agree, but the names were so out there, it's really hard to find them.
There's probably too little video footage of artists before that decade. Also, before the 50's people weren't as concerned with music as they were with, let's say... the world wars and everything in between...
even in the 1910s there were songs (patriotic songs for and against the war etc)
yes i think it's because the postwar period is the most productive, from the 50s music develope the 60s 70s...music
It's very hard to find 20s to 30s
3:52 Damn, Fat Albert's got some moves!
How is Elvis not one hes the face of the 50s and king of rock he should've been number one
Because he is not king of rock.. Chuck Berry is.
@Julio Moreta Darn right, Julio!!!
@Julio Moreta well these are ranked by views and sell and of course popularity
ari1234a ...
@RELUCTANT NABI NEO ... yup! I feel very fortunate to have seen Chuck Berry live a couple of times! He was an American treasure!
I was a teenager in this era, and this was my music.
Being able to sit here and sing each of these songs word for word felt nice.
YES! "JOHNNY B. GOODE" IS NUMBER ONE! Go Chuck Berry!
Go, Berry, go, go
Go, Berry, go, go
Go, Berry, go, go
Go, Berry, go, go
Chuck is awesome
#1 and #2 are definitely on my list of favorite songs from ANY decade!
The 1950s is the best! The 2010s suck so bad!!
Helena Okonma calm down
Yay racial segregation! Yay Cold War! 1950s was so ‘good’
The 50's had to be the American Golden age... not so much for Europe though it was still destroyed from WW2
I will time travel with 1960s-2010s thing with me to 1950s!
You look like you would like Taylor Swift...
my favourite music period of all time. Can never get enough of that ol rock n roll :D
“Without Elvis none of us could have made it” - Buddy Holly
2 Weeks Up North listen to this Elvis once said he (Buddy Holly) is the the king ppl only call me the king bc he (buddy Holly) isn’t alive
Yoyopoopsg ROBLOX I’ve never heard that before. Do you have proof he said that?
There are so many quotes from other artits but yeah its true
Oh what a great music. I was rock n rolling the whole time and Hubby was laughing at me. Thanks.
* - If you go by Popularity, Influence, Impact, The Charts, Sales then and Sales in the later Decades - it goes as follows :
1. Jailhouse Rock (By far the Heaviest Song of the 50’s and another note, - Elvis started recording in 1953 and his Rockabilly Style started in 1954)
2. Johnnie B Goode (The piano player for C.Berry says that he was the true writer of this song...)
3. Heartbreak Hotel (Elvis again-Nothing ever sounded like this tune at the time)
4. Hound Dog (Elvis’ idea for this tune was so explosive and set the rock n roll phenomenon)
5. Don’t Be a Cruel (Yes Elvis again-Most artists of that period claim this as there favourite tune)
6. Rock Around the Clock
7. That’ll Be The Day
8.Great Balls of Fire
9.Good Golly Miss Molly
& 10. Blue Suede Shoes (Both Carl & Elvis get the credit on this as they both made a huge impact)
*Leave the race excuses out of it and all the other lame excuses, (who’s the better guitarist, who wrote songs, Yada,Yada,Yada - it’s who created the best songs on vinyl for our listening pleasure - “ELVIS OWNS THE 50’s” This is all WatchMojo needs to say !
Thank you! So true. Elvis is the King.
E'vis is the king because of charisma.
I just love the 50's music,this is so darn awesome,love,love it bunches :)
I didn't grow up in the fifties but my parents did, so I know a lot about old music. The one I'm waiting for is the 1980s, which in my taste is the best decade for music.
The 50s is an awsome era in terms of music, cars and movies.
RIP Chuck Berry.

What an incredible time in music.
I pretty much agree with these 10 songs being "ground-breakers" and "game-changers"...maybe not in that exact order. And, of course, there were other great songs, but this list is pretty good.
my dad raises chickens, specifically comets. he has one roster, named bill haley
The guitar solo on Rock Around the Clock!!!!! Daaaaaaamn!
I liked Rave On by Buddy Holly.
Steve Shaha such a cool song!
'Rave On' stands up well even these days. :)
Me too, but there was probably one by Buddy I didn't like ..............I just can't think of it right now.
Oh, this is an awesome idea. I'm looking forward to the next videos. All the songs on this list, honorable mentions included, are absolute classics.
TheFatalitiesTV hi
The first R&R song was called Rocket 88 by Ike Turner and Jackie Brenston, and recorded in 1952, and was about the Oldsmobile of the day.
Oh, how i love 50s music :D Now that was MUSIC! ;)
I'm not sure about 'Decade defining' but this is the first ever Top 10 where I have loved every one. I remember seeing Chubby Checkers walk out of his Hotel in Dublin as I was walking home from school in the 50s. I did not see him play, unfortunately.
Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash though
Hannah Ward yess legends
10: Blue Suede Shoes - Carl Perkins
9: I Walk the Line - Johnny Cash

5: Hound Dog - Elvis Presley
4: That´ll Be The Day - Buddy Holly
3: Tutti Frutti - Little Richard

My heart goes to Jonny Cash.
RIP Johnny Cash Nobody can beat you at good music. MAN IS BLACK!❤❤❤❤❤❤
WatchMojo.com wow thank you guys for picking my suggestion, you guys are awesome man.
I'm 17 and I listen to everything from Tchaikovsky to Johnny Cash to Fall Out Boy. Its sad that a lot of other kids my age can't like the oldies
27 here but same thing.
Yea. I'm 24 now but I was about your age when I started to look into other decades for new music. It may not be new anymore but they're new to my ears. It's funny when an older person plays an old song and they're surprised that I know it.
Shut up stupid weaboo
It's weird because nobody asked
I'm 14 and all music today sucks
Kinda half expected Runaround Sue or Little Darlin to be in this!! Gonna be 47 soon and was listening to this with my mother!!! Reeling and rocking to these timeless classics!!
One thing I'm a bit puzzled about is, why is there no Dion and the Belmonts here.
I agree
Yes! Where's Dion?
Nothing defining or innovative about him.
"Rock Around The Clock" should've been first
I love this music & I'm only 18
My top 5 favorite 50s/60s rock n roll songs:
1: Rock Around The Clock by Bill Haley And His Comets (1955)
2: Johnny B Goode by Chuck Berry (1958)
3: Runaway by Del Shannon (1961)
4: Shake, Rattle, And Roll by Bill Haley And His Comets (1955)
5: The Great Pretender by The Platters (1955)
The music was so good back then, not like the crap rap we have today.
You could actually dance to this music.
I'm not sure if twist and shout is from the 50's or 60's bit man do I love that song. But these is one of the best list yet Watchmojo, thanks for these new series of great music.
Top 10 Gordon Ramsey Moments PLEASEEEE!
Modern Music owes a lot to these great artists
Johnny B. Goode. Only rock rong to ever fly in Space.
Nope ... Space Oddity was covered in space.
@@MsThebeMoon "Covered in space" is not the same as actually 'flying in space". Chuck's recording is actually on "vinyl" into space for all eternity. Check it out!
My dad plays these songs all the time. It's reminds me of him every time I hear these.
"That Cash was a liar is beside the point, the song was great"
I wasn't really into music much as a kid, but I really enjoyed music from the 50's. Now that I'm adult, I find myself listening to 80s music. I guess In 30 more years, I'll listen to today's music.
My top 10 of the 1950s:
Hon. Mention1 : Bye Bye Love," by the Everly Brothers; Hon. Mention 2: "Allegheny Moon" by Patti Page ('56);
10. "The Great Pretender," by The Platters ('55);
9. "Whatever Will Be Will Be (Que Sera, Sera) by Doris Day; ('56)"
8. "Blueberry Hill," by Fats Domino ('56);
7. "All Shook Up by Elvis Presley ('57);
6. "Sweet Little Sixten," by Check Berry ('57);
5. At the Hop," Danny & the Juniors ('57);
4. "Mack the Knife," by Bobby Darin ('59);
3. "(We're Gonna) Rock Around the Clock," by Bill Haley and His Comets (1955);
2. "Jailhouse Rock," Elvis Presley ('57);
1. "Don't be Cruel/Hounddog" by Elvis Presley ('56)...
Henry Frederick hundred procent agree with you sir.
I love "Bye Bye Love" but "Aint That a Shame" Is my favorite from Fats Domino and " Hound Dog" is for sure my favorite Elvis song
No Johnny ace?
ñice
thanks!
Damn, I forgot how bad-ass Elvis was during the 50s.
rojman123 ... yes indeed ...
Rockabilly RULES ok!
